Objectives and Activities
In setting the objectives and activities the Trustees have given careful consideration to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit.
SLiDE’s charitable purposes as defined in its objectives as cited in the Memorandum and Articles of Association:
-
To advance for the public benefit the performing arts, for people of all abilities, through the provision of accessible workshops, classes, events and performances in dance and associated art forms.
-
To advance for the public benefit education and training in inclusive arts practice in dance and associated art forms.
In 2022/23, the Trustees felt that the purposes were best achieved by continuing the core programme, alongside strengthening our infrastructure and existing partnerships. SLiDE’s core programme consists of:
-
Creative dance for wellbeing: community dance classes for people of varying ages, including people with learning disabilities and Parkinson’s disease.
-
Community performance groups and projects: adult company plus inclusive dance projects with a performance or particular artistic focus
-
SLiDE Collective: Learning disabled performers who co-create and perform relaxed, interactive dance pieces and co-facilitate outreach workshops.
The Trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding which activities the charity should undertake.
Key highlights of the year:
-
224 in-person and Zoom dance sessions were held, averaging 15 participants per session
-
Our work reached 805 people directly through participation in workshops and projects. With a wider reach of approximately 443 through carers, family members, audiences and partners.

Page 4
SLIDE DANCE LIMITED
TRUSTEES' ANNUAL REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2023
Challenges this year:
-
The cost of living crisis continues to have a big impact on SLiDE which includes higher production costs and lower audience figures and volunteers.
-
The Project Manager moved from part time to full time, replacing the Finance Manager allowing capacity and stability to increase amongst the core team. Although progress has been made, more is to be done regarding longer term funding to support key roles such as the Artistic Director.
-
SLiDE’s work is in demand, there are waiting lists for all the weekly sessions. Expanding existing programming has proven difficult with limited core funding so additional funding bids have been completed.
Plans for the future
2023/24 will be a busy year for SLiDE as we build towards the 10th anniversary (October) and take part in festivals as Croydon continues as the London Borough of Culture (BoC).
Creative dance for wellbeing:
-
Run two weekly dance groups for adults with learning disabilities and people with Parkinson’s disease.
-
Explore more regular sessions, in holiday and term time, for children and adults with learning disabilities and/or autism.

Financial Review
General review
2022/23 saw a significant increase in turnover due to a number of successful fundraising bids. Support was received from National lottery Community Fund, Arts Council England (ACE), Paul Hamlyn Foundation, City Bridge Trust, Garfield Weston and Jack Petchey Foundation.
Croydon Council’s finances continue to be exceedingly challenging with a third section 114 (bankruptcy) notice filed in November 2022. This may impact SLiDE's ability to raise funds from Council-led funding sources in future. However the trustees feel that SLiDE has made significant progress in creating a portfolio of funders that this risk is currently low and is being well managed.
Current year’s results:
The total income for the year was £154,642 (2022: £138,898), which was a 11% increase on the prior financial year. The majority of this was grant income.
The total expenditure for the year was £134,845 (2022: £93,154), which was a 45% increase on the prior financial year. The majority of the spend was on facilitator and assistant fees, project management and administration

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2023
Reserves Policy
The reserves policy agreed by the Trustees is to hold a minimum of one month’s running costs in unrestricted reserves, which equates to £10,000. The reserves are to cover core activity in the event of a period of unforeseen difficulty such as unsuccessful fundraising. SLiDE activities are only undertaken when funding is in place. Therefore the reserves would enable the charity to run a final 4 weeks of activities to wind up the charitable company in a careful and considered way, for our community members and partners. The Trustees have set a target reserves policy of three months’ running costs to be held in unrestricted reserves, in order to increase the organisation’s sustainability. To increase unrestricted reserves to the identified target the charity will be seeking to increase sustainable multi-year funding and including a request for funders to cover core costs in funding applications.
At 31 August 2023, unrestricted reserves of £21,230 (2022: £23,548) were held. SLiDE's reserves policy is reviewed and updated annually by the Finance Subcommittee and approved by the board.
Risk Assessment
The Trustees regularly review the major risks to which SLiDE is exposed. Where appropriate, procedures have been established to mitigate any risks faced by the organisation. Internal control risks are minimised through clear authorisation procedures for all projects, activities and financial transactions. Procedures are also in place to ensure the safeguarding and health and safety of staff, participants and visitors.
Statement of Trustees’ responsibilities
The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice) including FRS 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
Company law requires trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that period. In preparing the financial statements, the trustees are required to:
-
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently
-
observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP
-
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent
-
state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements
-
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charitable company will continue in business.
