## **The Oddballs Foundation Trustees Report For the year ended 31st October 2024**

The trustees present their report and financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31st October 2024.

## **Registration**

The charity was registered on 11th December 2015 with a registration number of 1164815.

## **Trustees**

Trustees are appointed in accordance with the provisions in the governing document. New trustees are recruited through open advertisement and are selected based on relevant experience and commitment to the charity's objectives.

The Board of Trustees meets bi-annually and retains oversight of strategy, finances, key flagship events, governance, and other matters arising. Day-to-day management is delegated to the Manager and charity staff team. The Manager will consult the Chair on any significant decisions.

The Chair will inform fellow trustees where appropriate any significant day-to-day decisions, if any arise which needs to be agreed by all trustees then additional on-line meetings will be arranged.

In the event of any current trustees resigning then the trustees will conduct a Skills Audit to ensure the replacement of the trustee their skills complement the existing trustees.

New trustees are asked to attend the upcoming meeting in-person where they receive an induction pack, charity commission guidance, and have an opportunity to meet their fellow Trustees. Ongoing support is available throughout the year upon request.

The OddBalls Foundation’s policy for remuneration of staff is benchmarked against sector averages and reviewed annually by the Board of Trustees.

The OddBalls Foundation collaborates with universities, sports clubs, and other organisations across the UK & Ireland, though it operates independently and is not part of a wider network.

## **Purpose, Objective and Review of The Year**

## Charitable Objectives:

To raise awareness of testicular cancer and encourage regular self-examination among young people, particularly men aged 15–49, who are most at risk of developing the cancer. We hope to encourage early detection through highlighting the importance of regular self-checks to help save lives.

## Main Activities:

- Delivering educational talks in schools, universities, workplaces, and other organisations.

- Distributing awareness materials and resources, such as our ‘Check Yourself’ guides, to educate and inform people.

- Hosting and attending events to engage with people through in-person interactions.

The OddBalls Foundation has continued and will continue to deliver its objective through our University Ambassador Programme, where university students across the UK & Ireland represent the charity to help raise awareness of testicular cancer – helping to remove the stigma associated with the cancer and breakdown barriers in a relatable, approachable and accessible manner.

The trustees confirm they have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit when reviewing aims and planning activities.

## **Achievements and Performance**

- Over 900 awareness talks delivered across the UK & Ireland.

- Over 120,000 people reached through awareness talks across the UK & Ireland.

- Distribution of over 1,500,000 self-check guides.

## **The OddBalls Foundation Festival 2024**

The OddBalls Foundation Festival is our flagship event, using the power of sport to bring people together and raise awareness of testicular cancer.

While the festival remained in Nottingham, a central and strategically important location where we have a strong presence, we made the decision to relocate from Nottingham Rugby to the University of Nottingham’s Highfields Sports Complex and Nottingham Hockey Centre. This move enabled us to expand the festival in multiple ways:

- Increased pitch capacity allowed us to welcome more teams.

- New sports, including netball, were added thanks to the enhanced facilities.

- Our Event Zone was developed further to enhance the overall experience.

The result? Our biggest festival to date, with over 3,000 people in attendance. We’ve established a strong working relationship with both the university and the hockey centre, who have already welcomed us back for 2025.

## **Volunteers**

The OddBalls Foundation is proud to be supported by a dedicated team of volunteers, most notably through our University Ambassador Programme. During the reporting period, we worked with 50 volunteer University Ambassadors across the UK and Ireland.

This programme is one of the most in-demand and competitive voluntary opportunities for university students, with hundreds of applicants each year. University Ambassadors play a vital role in furthering our mission by delivering talks, organising events, distributing awareness materials, and encouraging self-checks for testicular cancer across their cities and the wider community.

The impact of our volunteer University Ambassadors is significant and far-reaching, enabling us to extend our educational outreach into communities and organisations that might otherwise be difficult to access. Their passion, creativity, and teamwork are central to our success in raising awareness and saving lives.

Our University Ambassadors are expected to deliver a minimum 15 talks in 15 different schools throughout the academic year, as well as raising over £1,000 through their own fundraising pursuits. We deem this output significant in enabling us to reach hundreds of thousands of people, whilst also being realistic with the lifestyle demands of being a university student (prioritising academics, being involved in societies, and embracing the socials aspect of being a university student).

## **Grant-making**

During the reporting period, The OddBalls Foundation did not receive or distribute any grants, and grant-making has not formed a material part of our charitable activities to date.

However, the trustees recognise the potential value of grant funding in supporting the expansion and sustainability of our initiatives. As such, grant writing and the pursuit of external funding opportunities are areas the charity may explore to support future project, particularly those aimed at expanding our educational outreach and awareness campaigns.

Any future development in this area will be aligned with The OddBalls Foundation’s objectives and subject to the appropriate governance, with a clear policy framework established to ensure transparency and impact.

## **Fundraising**

Fundraising remains a vital component of The OddBalls Foundation’s income generation strategy and directly supports our mission to raise awareness of testicular cancer across the UK and Ireland.

During the reporting period, our fundraising activities included:

- University-led fundraising events coordinated by our University Ambassador Programme.

- Online campaigns and community-led fundraising challenges.

- Securing places at high-profile marathon and half marathon events, which were made available to our fundraising community. Participants purchased entry and pledged to raise a minimum fundraising total, helping to generate both income and visibility for The OddBalls Foundation.

These activities performed well against our internal fundraising objectives, helping us reach new audiences and sustain supporter engagement across digital and in-person platforms.

Expenditure on fundraising included:

- The production and distribution of branded merchandise, which supports both visibility and personal accountability / engagement. Wearing OddBalls Foundation branded clothing not only promotes our cause but also sparks conversation, drives traffic to individual fundraising pages, and increases social media engagement.

- Upfront costs to secure spaces in marathon and half marathon events, enabling fundraisers to take part and raise money under our banner.

- Logistical costs associated with sending out resources to fundraisers, including welcome packs, fundraising materials, and event-day gear.

While some of this expenditure represents an investment in long-term brand and supporter growth, it is expected to generate increased returns in future periods by expanding our network of fundraisers and enhancing public engagement.

## **Ongoing Partnership with Wilder Fight Night**

Wilder Fight Night hosts the largest student-led charity boxing events across the UK and Ireland, and we’re proud to continue our partnership with this incredible organisation.

During the 2023–24 academic year, Wilder Fight Night raised over £250,000 for The OddBalls Foundation. This partnership has grown stronger each year and is now built on a foundation of shared values and trust.

We’re excited to see how this relationship evolves and the impact it will continue to have as we work together to save lives through sport, awareness, and fundraising.

## **Key Risks and Uncertainties**

The Trustees of The OddBalls Foundation regularly review the key risks facing the charity and take appropriate steps to mitigate them. The principal risks and uncertainties identified during the reporting period include:

## 1. **Volunteer Engagement and Retention:**

Our University Ambassador Programme is central to delivering awareness activities. A drop in volunteer numbers or reduced student engagement could limit our outreach capacity. _Mitigation:_ We continue to invest in ambassador recruitment, training, and digital support tools to sustain and grow volunteer engagement.

## 2. **Event-Related Financial Commitments:**

The charity commits funds upfront to secure entries in marathons and other events. If fundraising targets are not met by participants, this could result in financial pressure.

_Mitigation:_ We are strengthening our vetting and support processes for fundraisers, introducing minimum pledge agreements, and improving participant onboarding to boost outcomes.

## 3. **Economic and Cost-of-Living Pressures:**

Broader economic challenges may affect donor giving and corporate support. _Mitigation:_ We are reviewing pricing strategies, building stronger partnerships, and increasing the flexibility of donation options to maintain supporter accessibility and engagement.

## 4. **Digital and Data Risks:**

As our fundraising and awareness efforts grow online, so does the risk of cyber threats and data breaches.

_Mitigation:_ We are reviewing data protection policies, working with reputable platforms, and implementing secure systems to ensure compliance with GDPR and sector best practice.

## **Looking Ahead:**

The Trustees remain vigilant in monitoring these and emerging risks. Our financial performance may be influenced by economic volatility, changes in charitable giving behaviour, or shifts in youth and student engagement. Through careful planning, ongoing investment in our people and systems, and a clear focus on mission-led growth, the charity is well positioned to manage these risks and remain financially resilient.

## **Financial Review, Reserves and Investment Policy**

The charity's income exceeded its expenditure for the year under the review by £181,460. Donations amounting to £680,092 were received over the reporting period.

It is the charity’s policy to hold reserves. The trustee has reviewed the policy on the level of reserves needed by the Trust. The trustee believes that the level of reserves is reasonable in current circumstances. However, this policy will be reviewed on a regular basis.

There is no restriction on the charity's power to invest. The investment strategy is set periodically by the trustee to take account of the needs for funds and the maintenance of the value of the assets.

## **Plans for Future Periods**

Looking ahead, The OddBalls Foundation remains committed to its core mission: raising awareness of testicular cancer, encouraging regular self-examination, and breaking down stigma through education, visibility, and conversation.

Our key aims and objectives for the upcoming period include:

- **Developing the University Ambassador Programme** to reach more campuses across the UK and Ireland, enabling us to grow our education network and deliver more awareness talks.

- **Developing digital & physical resources** , including the launch of a monthly SMS / messaging services to support monthly self-check reminders, educational content, and engagement tracking.

- **Increasing our presence at national sporting events** , securing more charity spaces at marathons and half marathons, and strengthening relationships with sports organisations to maximise fundraising and awareness opportunities.

- **Enhancing our school and college outreach** through tailored workshops and challenges, aimed at educating younger audiences in a relevant, accessible way.

- **Exploring grant funding opportunities** to diversify our income streams and support future research, programme delivery, and resource development.

## **Launching The OddPod**

The OddPod is our brand-new mobile awareness unit, designed to provide private, accessible spaces for men to check themselves for signs of testicular cancer.

Our goal is to bring The OddPod to high-footfall locations, including professional sports stadiums, university campuses, festivals, military barracks, and workplaces, to empower more people to take proactive steps toward looking after their health.

The OddPod officially launches in November 2024, marking a major milestone in our mission to normalise conversations around testicular health.

## **The OddBalls Foundation Festival 2025**

We’re expecting The OddBalls Foundation Festival 2025 to be our biggest and most exciting event yet. Building on the success of 2024, we’re expanding the festival by introducing new sports, including Men’s Football, Mixed Touch Rugby, and Mixed Lacrosse, which will attract more teams, more players, and ultimately, more spectators.

In addition, we’ll be laying the groundwork to bring on official event partners to support the festival’s continued growth and impact.

The event will once again take place at the University of Nottingham’s Highfields Sports Complex and Nottingham Hockey Centre, where we’ve built strong relationships and an ideal home for our flagship event.

All planned activities are designed to increase impact, ensure sustainability, and reach more young people with potentially life-saving information. The trustees are committed to scaling The OddBalls Foundation’s reach while maintaining the authenticity and community-led spirit that defines its work.
