Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From: 1[st] April 2022 To: 31[st] March 2023

Charity name: Strictly Wheels Foundation (working name: Strictly Wheels)

Charity registration number: 1164805

Objectives and Activities

The charity’s primary objective is to promote and provide access to wheelchair dance classes and wheelchair skills courses.

The weekly classes in Manchester were established in March 2016 following the set up of the charity and 2 amounts of funding to cover the training of the volunteer teachers and room hire for the first year of classes along with equipment needed to set up.

Achievements and Performance

Our classes got back to normal in 2022 following the Covid pandemic and final restrictions and free testing being stopped. Our volunteer teachers continued to Covid Test where possible.

We had steady open class attendance by a core of around 10 dancers.

Competitive classes and practice continue on a fortnightly basis on the opposite weeks to the open class.

The competition scene opened up again and we had dancers compete for the first time internationally at Malta in November 2022, where they achieved a 2 silver medals in the Amateur category and 4[th] place in Top Latin. It was a welcome return to the floor for Paula & Gary since the pandemic. Our amateur couple also competed at Easter 2023 in Holland gaining a silver in Latin and Gold in Ballroom – a great achievement for them.

Financial Review

Whilst preparing this year’s accounts an accounting error was discovered on an asset purchased in the financial year 2021-22 not having been depreciated. Therefore, corrected accounts have been published next to this year’s figures. Note this has no impact on the charity’s cash position and is simply an accounting principal error.

No general funding has been applied for during the financial year as funding streams for disability and sport are few and far between. We have continued to use reserves to fund the weekly classes and overheads. There is still enough unrestricted funding on reserve to keep this ongoing for another year. New funds will need to be sourced in the coming year.

Restricted Funds continue to be retained and will be used for ongoing projects as was their original purpose.

Future plans

Our regular members are growing in the open class. This remains a less formal class with just an introduction to Ballroom & Latin tuition which is our core strength with the aim of increasing the numbers looking to progress to competitive dancing. We will continue to offer the fortnightly open classes to attract new dancers. We have agreed to fund external training to support the club’s volunteer teachers.

Passing of Co-Founder

We cannot publish this report at time of writing without mention of the passing of our Co-Founder, Paula Moulton in June 2023. Paula’s passing will be an extremely huge loss to our charity, however, the aim is to continue to teach and provide classes in the coming year with no change to ongoing activities. Trustees will be updated in due course.
