Camberley Alzheimer Café CIO Registered Charity No. 1164771 Trustees Report August 2021 – July 2022

Introduction

With an especially talented group of volunteers the Camberley Alzheimer Café CIO has continued to function, albeit whilst undergoing changes in its various functions. ‘Adaptation’ has been our key word!

  1. From September 2021 – March 2022 our international education programme was experienced through Zoom to a monthly average of 23 guests.

  2. Weekly ‘Keeping in touch’ telephone calls have been delivered by a team of 5 volunteers to 50 guests.

  3. Through the calls above, 16 families were identified for ‘Safeguarding’ by our Adult Social Care Locality Team (Surrey Heath).

  4. In effect we have participated in the ‘Circle of life’ with the joy of new born babies for grandparents, new guests and team members have joined us, others have entered long or short term residential care, for some it has been ‘end of life’ care with eventual celebration of life and funerals.

  5. Currently our team are in the process of relocating to another part of town, from St. Mary’s Church (Camberley West) to St. Martin’s Church (Camberley North).

Principal Objective:

To make available to the people in our vicinity the international programme supporting people in any of the dementias, their carers and those interested in the world of dementia. This to enable quality of life for all involved.

Key Objectives:

  1. To work with specialists in the field today so that they can deliver information that is timely and realistic for families; examples being the NHS Memory Clinic, the Alzheimer Society, Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Dr. Gemma Jones (international dementia care consultant) who initiated the Alzheimer Café in England in 2000.

  2. To enable people to learn and to understand the impact of dementia in society at large and the individual in particular as well as effective communication strategy.

  3. To continue to be involved in the integrated care system – to contribute to it representing the needs of families where dementia is a feature and on a national level at the Westminster Forum.

3

  1. To sign post to the services available for people in distress in our locality.

  2. To provide a place of safety where people can experience pleasure in the company of others.

Activities

In the first 7 months of this season (September 2021 – July 2022) we continued using

Zoom sessions, thus ensuring safety for our people. In addition, with permission, we

forwarded lecturers notes and articles to all 104 of our registered guests.

In April 2022 we opened the Café ‘face to face’ on the monthly basis. We strove to

ensure safety for these elderly, vulnerable members of our community. We have

insisted that all exhibit evidence of negative Covid lateral flow tests. Where this has

been impossible, we have provided the kits and a separate room where these could be

used.

We have provided freshly cooked meals, under the auspices of Chef Darren Duplock,

for all, with due care to personal preferences. Men from our earlier ‘Man with a Pan’

courses have assisted us in the setting up of the church hall and have gladly served the

meals to our guests. They have also brought joviality and humour to their interactions

with the public.

One of our volunteers, Maureen Lomas, has brought her talent in teaching reflexology

and yoga. Maureen continues to take 10 minute’s armchair exercise sessions. These

do contribute to the relaxation and laughter in the room as we all get so mixed up!

Fiona Douglas, our MC for this year, has continued to encourage people to sing with the recognition of birthdays in singing ‘Happy Birthday’. This to involve everyone in the making of music which is known to be so effective in stimulating failing brain cells.

We have continued to meet with others in the integrated care system, to spread the word and to invite them to join in our sessions. Maggie Rolfe, now in the role of ‘Event’s organiser’ represents our organisation at the Voluntary Services Welcome Forum. Rajendra Chhetri is our representative with the Surrey Heath CCG. He is also our car parking marshal who often hears of the plight of families before they enter the building!

Continued education for volunteers

Much discussion revolved around the subject of Covid-19 and keeping selves, families and guests safe. Thus it was that the topic of lateral flow tests was addressed along with where these could be obtained.

We are fortunate to have access to the Westminster Forum and the topics discussed. With permission the recordings and transcripts were made available to our volunteers:

  1. Jan 202.2: Addressing health inequalities

  2. Feb. 2022: The future of social security

  3. Mar. 2022: Next steps for dementia diagnosis, care and research in England

  4. Mar. 2022: Tackling homelessness and rough sleeping

  5. Feb 2022.: Next steps for vaccine rollout, research and development

  6. April 2022: Palliative and end of life care

  7. May 2022: Next steps for highly specialised medicines

Continued education for volunteers contd.

Customarily, where known topics could have greater relevance for colleagues in other fields the opportunity to participate is given to them. Such subjects in the last year have been:

  1. Oct. 2021: Priorities for tackling ethnic minority healthcare inequalities (Neil Flanigan – Chair of the West Indian Veterans Association)

  2. Feb. 2022 Improving support for autistic adults and children – Father of an adult autistic daughter (Anthony Hall).

Achievements

  1. Continued programme through Zoom and distribution of appropriate literature to guests.

  2. ‘Keeping in touch’ phone calls, 50 weekly from 5 team members

  3. Such phone calls alerted us to the need for ‘Safeguarding’ for 16 families in the last year.

  4. Effective communication with our splendid Adult Social Care Locality Team who have acted within 24 hours to resolve issues above.

  5. Monthly team meetings amongst this especially talented group for frank discussion.

  6. Sharing of information as it becomes available – Westminster Forum transcripts.

6

[Type here]

  3. Surrey Heath Borough Council

  4. One Stop Groundwork

  5. Co op

The treasurer’s report will provide the detail. The main items of expenditure have been

  1. Meals for 41 – 51 people

  2. Hire of the church hall

Financial Review contd.

  1. Flowers for sickness and bereaved families

  2. Office stationery

  3. Phone call and IT service

  4. Westminster Forum transcripts

Optional information

  1. In reality we are still in the recovery phase from Covid-19. The incidence in the Camberley area continues to be above the national average. This being so we will continue to seek negative lateral flow test results from both team members and guests.

  2. We belong to different groups in the community, taking and giving to them. With the integrated care system in flow we have managed to gain resolution to some of our guests’ challenges and in a timely manner. Thus safeguarding has been arranged within a few hours of approach to the officials.

  3. Loneliness has had a heavy impact upon our elderly and at times the solution has been admission to a care facility. (Detail from a Westminster Forum – 30% of our people in dementia have no contact with a relative in any month.) At other times it is just a listening ear that seems to alleviate strain in carers. Our team know what carers are experiencing – they have been there too. In the evaluation exercise at the end of this season, July 18[th] . 2022, the one thing that was appreciated above all else was company .

  4. With the relocation to St. Martin’s we are slowly acclimatising to the new building and encouraging team members to attend functions so that they can become familiar with the building.

5. Of necessity we have been forced to forgo all the plans for courses with Dr. Gemma Jones in this year.

Future Plans

The totality of running the Camberley Alzheimer Café requires contribution from a number of sources.

  1. Our main aim is the safe and satisfactory transference from St. Mary’s to St. Martin’s. Some guests have been in a quandary about transport. Fortunately, two of our team are car drivers with Camberley Cars and able to help people; there is also a thriving bus service.

  2. Live music and to enable those to dance who could wish to do so.

10

[Type here]

  1. An Infection Control Officer (Summer Kanyepi) has agreed to attend our next Team Meeting in September to give an update on Covid in England today.

  2. Arrangements are in progress re the Opening of the Café in St. Martin’s. We do have an auspicious set of invited guests from the Church, politics and our local Mayor, Helen Whitcroft. The aim here being to break down barriers between those in need and those willing to assist.

  3. Continuation of the educational programme which will allow adaptation as is seen necessary. At the moment Sue Ingram from Therapy Garden has been invited to join us in October. This from having witnessed clarity of vision in someone with continuing brain haemorrhage once in amongst trees and the Basingstoke Canal.

  4. To rekindle the plans for the specialist courses with Dr. Gemma Jones.

Conclusion

The Volunteer Team of the Camberley Alzheimer Café have succeeded in providing the essential international education programme for those families, staff and friends experiencing dementia. Theirs has been the ability to provide a safe and secure locality where people can meet and experience friendship in doing so.

This recognises too that difficulty can arise and that there is resolution within the community. The ‘circle of life’ is continuous and where we all help one another there are only winners. Thus it is that we provide the facility for education and pleasure for both guests and volunteers.
