Camberley Alzheimer Café CIO
Registered Charity No. 1164771
Trustees Report August 2020 – July 2021
Introduction
The Camberley Alzheimer Café CIO continues to be part of the original Alzheimer Café UK designed to introduce this facility into the UK from Holland.
The website (www.alzheimercafe.co.uk) provides information about the history of the organisation, who they are for and what happens there.
This last year being an extraordinary one (pandemic) the monthly programme has been delivered by Zoom followed up with specific articles relevant to the topic of the month. Individual ‘keeping in touch’ weekly phone calls have been delivered by the team members. The programme, itself, is an international one focussed on the emotional world of dementia and its impact on the family.
As ever, we have worked closely with NHS and voluntary bodies where the need has arisen as it has in emergency situations. Of remarkable contribution in such situations has been the Frimley Health Adult Social Care Locality Team.
Principal Objective:
To make available to the people in our vicinity the international programme supporting people with dementia, their carers and those interested in the world of dementia. This to enable quality of life for all involved.
Key Objectives:
-
To work with specialists in the field today so that they can deliver information that is up to date and realistic for families; examples being NHS Memory Clinic, Alzheimer Society, Citizen’s Advice and Dr. Gemma Jones (international dementia care consultant);
-
To enable people to learn and to understand the impact of dementia on the individual and themselves
-
To continue to be involved in the integrated care system – to contribute to it representing the needs of families where dementia is a feature and on a national level at the Westminster Forum.
-
To sign post to the services available for people in distress in our locality.
3
Activities
In a bid to ensure safety for our elderly frail clientele, we have continued with the planned educational programme using Zoom. Of an international nature this is to ensure that people can join in from any town, village or country and know just what to expect. Thus they may be more able to relax quickly and take advantage of the opportunities available.
It has taken time for people to be able to relax and actually chat on Zoom. Of the greatest benefit in this sphere has been the work of Maureen Lomax who leads sessions in armchair exercises for 10 minutes. And yes people get all mixed up but they do laugh and this seems to loosen them up physically and mentally so they can talk about their lives openly.
We have continued to meet with others in the integrated care system, to spread the word and to invite them to join in our sessions.
Continued education for volunteers
With the introduction of the lockdown coming so quickly our time has been taken with ensuring that all know of how to protect themselves and their families from Covid-19. We have avoided circumstances where there could be risk attached. Our team are of an equal age and health status to that of our clientele.
As with our guests, team members have been pleased to let me know their vaccination status.
At an early monthly meeting the topic of lateral flow tests was addressed along with where these could be obtained. With or without vaccination it has been recommended that these be used before any event involving the public. All are aware of ‘Test and Trace’ as it is in such frequent deployment.

Other optional information
-
This has been a long 18 months since the beginning of the pandemic. We have had to adjust to changing circumstances and needs amongst our team and our guests. It will be seen above that we come from very different backgrounds and experiences – rather like our guests at the Café..
-
We belong to different groups in the community, taking and giving to them. With the integrated care system in flow we have managed to gain resolution to some of our guests’ challenges and in a timely manner. Thus safeguarding has been arranged within a few hours of approach to the officials.
-
Loneliness has had a heavy impact upon our elderly and at times the solution has been admission to a care facility. (Detail from a Westminster Forum – 30% of our people in dementia have no contact with a relative in any month.) At other times it is just a listening ear that seems to alleviate strain in carers. Our team know what carers are experiencing – they have been there too.
-
Currently our guests are asking when the Café can meet again ‘face to face’. This will be when it is safe for this group to meet in public.
Future Plans
At present our expectations are that we shall be able to open the Camberley Alzheimer Café with all its services in the New Year at St. Mary’s Church Centre:
-
Home made meal with a new chef, Mr. Darren Diplock,
-
Live music,
-
Continuation of educational programme
-
Time to share experiences and chat.
We have planned an educational programme with Dr. Gemma Jones. These will be in different localities around Camberley to give more of the general public the opportunity to participate.
An application has been made to the National Lottery for finance to support the courses and the Café itself.
We foresee the need to continue with the Zoom meetings as so many new guests have joined us since March 2020. We are considering the strategy needed for such. The weekly telephone service is yet another aspect of our service that may need adjustment for those unable to physically travel to St. Mary’s.
We recognise that opening up the Café may need adjustment and once this is accomplished then we shall have the opportunity to consider if and what other opportunities we could harness for the good people of Camberley.
7
Conclusion
The last year has been one in which the team of the Camberley Alzheimer Café have continued to provide the planned educational programme in times of uncertainty. A team of people with varied backgrounds and skills we have managed to keep the service going. This has been through
-
virtual monthly meetings with Zoom and
-
weekly telephone calls to 50 of our guests.
We have recognised when some family circumstances have required intervention for safety and have worked with our system to ensure this.
Our team and our clientele look forward to the time when we shall be able to meet again ‘face to face’.
