## _**Hemel Hempstead Methodist Church (HHMC)**_ **Registered Charity Number 1164741 Trustees Annual Report for the year 1 September 2020 to 31 August 2021** Hemel Hempstead Methodist Church (HHMC) exists to worship God, as we grow in faith, fellowship and love for one another, to seek to serve God and the community, and through our lives and witness, help people to come to a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ. HHMC is a member of the West Hertfordshire and Borders Methodist Circuit and therefore part of the Methodist Church of Great Britain. The Trustees are Managing Trustees of the church building at 270 Northridge Way, Hemel Hempstead HP1 2AU which was completed and opened in 2015. All Trustees are members of HHMC and are either elected by the Annual General Meeting or appointed to a specific role by the Church Council. The Trustees are listed elsewhere on the Charity Commission website. On 1[st] September 2019, Revd Andrew Brazier became the Minister and Chair of Trustees. Accounts for the year 2020-21 are attached. There was a deficit due to the fall in income during the year, particularly in lettings income, because of the exceptional circumstances of the pandemic. HHMC had 85 members at the end of the year (31[st] August 2021) and 84 members at the date of the Annual General Meeting on 1[st] November 2021, plus a considerably larger ‘pastoral list’ of people associated with the church but not formally members. A service of worship is livestreamed on Facebook on the church’s Facebook page every Sunday morning. Recordings of each service have been placed on YouTube every week since September 2020. The church building is used for livestreaming of services and has been used for this purpose since July 2020. The Trustees decided in July 2020 that livestreaming of services should continue after the pandemic is over. The church has invested in equipment to facilitate the production of good quality livestream broadcasts. The long term plan is that every morning service should be both livestreamed and attended by a congregation in the building and so the equipment setup has been designed for this dual use of the worship area during services. The church building was closed for most of its previous activities from March 2020 onwards. It was reopened for Sunday worship for a small congregation from 20[th] September – 1[st] November 2020, 6[th] – 20[th] December 2020 and from 4[th] April 2021 onwards . During these periods of reopening precautions to reduce the risk of spread of Covid-19 were put in place as set out in a Covid-19 risk assessment. These included limiting the numbers present and this was done using a booking system. From 1[st] August the booking system was discontinued and hymn singing was gradually reintroduced, but socially distanced seating, the wearing of face masks and other precautions were continued. A written worship resource and a church notice sheet were either emailed or posted every week to everyone on the church pastoral list. A church newsletter was published every 6 weeks and sent to everyone. Contact was also maintained with people on the pastoral list through regular phone calls from pastoral visitors. - Some church activities have continued in a different form during the lockdown. - Messy Church kept in contact with families with monthly online Facebook sessions, and sent a sheet with activities to do at home every month plus seasonal gift bags at Christmas 2020 and Easter 2021. There was a short informal session face to face in the church garden in June 2021 and face to face sessions in the church hall started in September 2021 - Wednesday Fellowship shared thought, concerns, prayers and inspiring pieces online in a weekly Newsletter. - Thursday fellowship met weekly on Zoom - The Saturday ‘Coffee Morning’ started meeting on Zoom from December 2020 onwards. This group meet for fellowship only and drink coffee in their own homes. Unlike the Saturday coffee mornings held before lockdown no fundraising takes place at this event. Trustee meetings and other church meetings continued on Zoom throughout the year. No Annual General Meeting was held between September 2020 and August 2021 but a face to face Annual General Meeting was held on 1[st] November 2021. The reopening of the building began in September 2021 with the gradual resumption of some normal church activities and letting the building to external groups. The church has operated a ‘charity of the month’ scheme this year whereby members of the congregation are invited to donate to a particular charity every month. Some members send their donations to these charities via the church bank account. ## **Activities in the community** Community activities during lockdown have been very limited. Members of the church continued to be involved with the local street pastors when they were able to operate. The church has also supported DENS, the local charity for the homeless, with financial appeals as part of the ‘charity of the month’ scheme described above.
