Supporting cultural developments in Gloucester ## Trustees Report for GUST Charity No 1164727 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022 GUST has continued to focus on partnership working and cultural capacity building in the city of Gloucester through 2021-22. Over this period, we have focussed on developing two key projects whilst also offering broader support to partners in the arts, culture and heritage sectors as they continue to navigate post-Covid challenges. ## **Take Note:** The Trustees report for year ended March 31[st] 2021 indicated that GUST had secured Esmee Fairbairn Foundation funding to support collaboration with arts entrepreneurs Marianna Hay and Emily Webb to deliver Take Note. In 2021-22 Take Note came to fruition with the delivery of two funded projects: - _Creative Communities, New Perspectives_ – a collaboration between Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, GARAS (Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers), Inclusion Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire Carers Hub and Look Again Photography to boost mental health and wellbeing through mindful photography and drama. The project brought together carers, NHS patients, adults facing disabling barriers, adults living in or in recovery from mental ill health and people seeking or who had been granted asylum and delivered a programme of workshops that explored the relationship between photography and mindfulness. It culminated in an exhibition of the work at Gloucester Cathedral in August 2021 and a dance and drama performance created in response to the images. _“The course has made me realise that we exist as a community, that people are interested in each other and the way they see the world and they can learn from each other that way”_ Project Participant _“This project demonstrates how working collaboratively in close and equal partnership using the arts can bring together the public health, voluntary and community sectors to have a longlasting legacy and impact”_ Helen Jeffrey, Community Engagement & Social Responsibility Manager, Gloucester Cathedral. - _Connect, Collaborate and Create_ – a collaboration between Your Next Move, Music Works, Barton Street Neighbourhood Policing Team, Prospects Youth Support Team, The Venture Playground and Friendship Café to create a hip hop and visual arts project that shines a light on food poverty in the city. This film explains how the project came about and how it provided a safe space for young people and children to be creative during the summer of 2021. Take Note went on to produce The Collaboration Guidebook, using these 2 Gloucester projects as case studies for best practice. It has been widely promoted across the country as a guide for organisations and individuals about how to create successful collaborations and partnerships. In the intervening 12 months, City Voices has been established as GUST’s lead project and we anticipate that the incubation of this emerging cultural organisation will continue until 2024. Initially conceived as an element of Gloucester History Festival, which GUST invested in and successfully grew from 2016-18, City Voices was able to develop its strength considerably as a result of the Great Places Project. Great Places funding enabled a co-ordinated programme across the city which unleashed the creativity of many communities. The quality and originality of the work goes from strength to strength. Supporters were acquired along the way wanted to develop the potential of City Voices and, with GUST’s help, in 20201-22 the programme secured a £249,000 National Lottery Heritage Fund grant. In addition, City Voices received income from 2 individuals and was also supported by Gloucester City Council. Over three years, funding will enable City Voices to develop strong, meaningful relationships with communities across the city, underpinned by much-needed increased organisational resilience. Gloucester’s diverse population doesn’t traditionally engage with cultural activities. By working with residents from wide-ranging backgrounds City Voices will offer opportunities to explore and celebrate heritage important to them. City Voices will: - Establish ring-fenced commissioning funds to directly support under-represented communities to tell their stories, develop events, build new skills and offer a platform to share their heritage. - Ensure City Voices is community-led by setting up a diverse, supportive community advisory panel representative of the communities we are trying to reach and ensuring participants feel ownership of City Voices. - Upskill local people so they are interested and excited about pursuing careers in heritage - Develop a long-term strategy for City Voices, with a focus on increasing resilience and supporting the organisation to provide high-quality, community-led opportunities. In the first year of funding City Voices sought to join the programme up with Gloucester History Festival where appropriate but also to work towards developing strong relationships within communities year round. Developing trust and supporting ideas emerging from individuals and organisations to be developed into formed projects that can be shown at any time of year. Experience is already showing that engaging communities in heritage takes time. Part of the City Voices programme is to provide a pot of funding for communities to apply to so they can deliver their own projects. As well as setting up this funding pot this period also enabled them to set up a representative community panel who going forwards will decided who will receive the pots of funding. ## Projects funded in year 1 included: **History, Her story, Their story, Our story** - Gloucestershire Archives and Fresh Air Foundations. Inspired and Mentored by the ‘Godfather of Black British Photography’ Vanley Burke, Gloucester artists worked with local schools to create stunning work, shared during the Gloucester History Festival at an event at the Guildhall attended by over 100 people. This went on to form a part of an exhibition in the Museum of Gloucester. Supporting cultural developments in Gloucester **Gloucester and The Slave Trade: A Documentary** - Cotswold Centre For History & Heritage and the University of Gloucestershire. Screening and panel discussion, attended by over 100 people. Up to date information about the organisation is available online (https://voicesgloucester.org.uk/) and it should be noted that from late 2022 City Voices has been rebranded Voices Gloucester. ## **Supporting Partners in Gloucester:** Alongside Take Note and City Voices, GUST has continued to support partners in the arts, culture and heritage sectors in the city of Gloucester. Trustees regularly attend meetings and interactions to support growth and development in the cultural life of the city and, as both individuals and an organisation, we continue to operate as influencers and critical friends to a range of partners. In 2021-22 we supported a local creative School of Larks (https://schooloflarks.com/) in securing grant funding for innovative work in aerial and circus skills. We anticipate this relationship will develop further in future. The total income for the charity in the year to March 31st 2022 was £75,750 against £62,391 year ended March 31st 2021. We closed the year with cash of £37,151, of which £35,663 is identified as restricted funds allocated to City Voices.
