Supporting cultural developments in Gloucester Gust is a charitable incorporated organisation charity registration no. 1164727 ## **Trustees Report for GUST Charity No 1164727 April 2020 to March 31[st] 2021** The Trustees report for year ended March 31st 2020 indicated that GUST was in the initial stages of collaborating with Take Note. GUST began working with social and arts entrepreneurs Marianna Hay and Emily Webb in 2019 to look at trialling their new The Take Note: Connect programme in Gloucester. The programme, having delivered a pilot in Suffolk earlier in the year, supports organisations to deliver extraordinary artistic work together and in partnership. Having been brought up in Gloucester and recently returned to live in the area, Emily was keen to see Gloucester benefit from this new initiative. With our knowledge of the people and organisations working in the city, GUST was a perfect partner to deliver this element of their programme. We signed a partnership agreement with Take Note in April 2020 and submitted the 2[nd] stage of our joint application to Esmee Fairbairn Foundation for funding to deliver the project. The project aims were threefold: to increase confidence and expertise in communities to deliver arts projects, to empower local arts organisations to work collaboratively to deliver bigger and better arts projects and to develop a model of partnership working which could be replicated to achieve social change in regions of low arts provision across the UK. The aims were in line with GUST’s own to strengthen strategic support for organisations and people in Gloucester to develop better ways of working together and delivering ever more ambitious projects and programmes. ## With funding of £58,000 secured in August 2020, Take Note: Connect Gloucester was launched in September 2020: **New partnership initiative Take Note and Gloucester-based charity GUST will collaborate with and support Gloucester organisations to deliver bold artistic work together and catalyse social change.** The programme provided funding of £40,000 to support 2 partnership projects, with Take Note providing wrap-around strategic support and partnership tools to ensure the partners have the greatest possible impact for these 2 projects and to enable more partnership working with even greater collective impact in the future. The programme acknowledged the infrastructure and strategic foundations created by Gloucester Culture Trust and we worked closely with the Trust to connect and support organisations and individuals interested in the opportunity, bringing together potential partners across the city and advising applicants on submissions for this pot of funding. The 10-year Gloucester Cultural Strategy 2016-2026 is founded on the principle of partnership and with community at its heart and Take Note Gloucester responds directly to these ambitions. We launched the fund in October with an open-invite Zoom attended by over 30 participants, from arts and social organisations and Individual artists. This was followed up with a networking/partnershipbuilding session online to facilitate Introductions to those looking to build partnerships for their application to the fund. 20 Gloucester organisations and artists attended and these sessions are now being embedded by the Culture Trust as a regular networking offer in the city due to the success of this event: "We should do this [speed dating] all the time - it's so valuable to be able to connect like this, something we've never done in the city before - we should make the most of it." _Chris Walker, AgeUK Gloucestershire_ A total of 44 organisations via 10 partnership projects applied for Take Note funding in November 2020 – January 2021 with a 2-stage application process. These projects showed an incredibly strong pool of arts organisations, artists, freelancers and cross-sector collaborators, demonstrating the dynamism and innovation of Gloucester’s creative commitment to arts for social change. The two successful partnership projects represented an exciting fusion of arts and non-arts organisations working together to make change. This will run until autumn 2021 following the successful delivery of the 2 projects during the summer. With our networks and insight into Gloucester organisations, we supported the application process, selecting 2 very different but equally inspiring projects to fund in March 2021. Hip-hop, beatboxing, film, drama and photography are set to animate the streets and homes of Gloucester this summer. Young people and families affected by food poverty, NHS patients, carers, refugees and asylum seekers and people from the wider Gloucester community will create powerful artworks, to be celebrated publicly as the country opens up after lockdown. **Connect, Collaborate and Create** brings together Your Next Move with The Music Works, Barton Street Neighbourhood Policing Team, Prospects Youth Support Team, The Venture Playground and Friendship Cafe. Together they will create a hip-hop project that shines a light on food poverty, working with young people, their families and the wider community to create collaborative hip hop, beatboxing, MCing, DJing and graffiti and a film that captures the power of this work. **Creative Communities, New Perspectives** is a collaboration of Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, GARAS (Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers), Inclusion Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire Carers Hub and Look Again to boost mental health and wellbeing through mindful photography and drama. Working with a wide range of people struggling with their wellbeing, there will be an exhibition of their work at the Cathedral and Gloucester Royal Hospital in the summer. “This wouldn't have been possible without the Take Note programme... It's the partnership approach that really makes this more interesting and more special - for us as organisations and for the individuals taking part because they get to meet people they wouldn't necessarily meet otherwise and it helps to open people's minds and eyes to new possibilities." _Ruth Davey, Look Again Photography on BBC Radio Gloucestershire_ Take Note facts and figures: - Secured **£58,388** funding from Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. - Awarded **£40,000** funding to 2 partnership projects with a total of 12 partner organisations across arts and non-arts sectors in Gloucester. - **16 cross-sector partners** from arts and other social change organisations including NHS, Police, refugee support agency, disability support agency and more, involved in these 2 partnership projects. - **10 partnership applications** to Take Note: Connect Gloucester from a total of **44 Gloucester organisations** /community partners. - Over **30 arts and non-arts organisations and individual artists** and producers attended the Take Note: Connect Gloucester launch and gave overwhelmingly positive feedback. The total income for the charity in the year to March 31[st] 2021 was £62,391 against £33,609 year ended March 31[st] 2020. We closed the year with cash of £8,578 of which £8,485 is identified as restricted funds from the Esmee Fairbairn Trust and which is allocated to conclude spending for Take Note. Looking ahead to 2021-22, we intend to continue our work supporting partnership development in the city of Gloucester, particularly in light of the impact of Covid-19 on the cultural and heritage sectors. In particular we are in the early stages of collaboration with the City Voices team, exploring ways in which GUST can support the growth of this key strand of Gloucester History Festival. Our collaboration with Take Note is ongoing, and we look forward to the delivery of the two funded projects in the coming months.
