REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES

Structure, governance and management

Youth With A Mission Cymru/Wales is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) foundation registered on 7[th] December 2015 with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

This is the eighth annual report and accounts prepared by the charity. In previous years YWAM Wales has operated under Youth With A Mission Limited (charity number 264078), and relations are still strong with this ‘sister charity’.

New trustees are appointed by the current trustees in accordance with the governing instrument.

Public benefit

The charity trustees have complied with the duty in section 4 of the 2006 Charities Act to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers and duties.

Objectives and activities

The purposes of the charity are:

• The advancement of the Evangelical Christian Faith in Wales and elsewhere in the United Kingdom or abroad as the trustees may from time to time think fit.

• • To advance education in accordance with Christian principles in the said country and elsewhere in the United Kingdom or abroad as the trustees may from time to time think fit.

• • To promote and fulfil such other charitable purposes beneficial to the community in the said country and elsewhere in the United Kingdom or abroad as the trustees may from time to time think fit.

To fulfil these purposes the charity has carried out the following activities during the year:

Introduction

The 2022-23 year was one of ministry and team building.

Our Wrexham team shrank by two as one couple moved back to their home nation in January 2023. Cardiff also shrank when the Walker family moved home as well. Cardiff grew by one when Kelsea moved to Wales from Northern Ireland to join the team then shrank as she spent indefinite time on medical leave.

As the Cardiff team moved into their second full year of pioneering they were beset with frequent and significant illness which has taken its toll in time available and energy levels.

Christian Training and Education

Several of our missionaries have been engaged in teaching, speaking and preaching ministries, in at least six different churches in Wrexham and Cardiff as well as in other missionary training centres. Our commitment to Christian training and education has continued throughout the year – not only as teachers and trainers, but as learners. Of particular note:

• Lidia, taught on a training programmes in YWAM Northern Ireland.

• Sarah graduated from a year-long course in Christian Formation & Discipleship in November 2022. She started staffing the Autumn 2023 cohort in March 2023 with lots of staff development as a focus in the Spring and Summer.

• Bob attended two pilgrimages in Wales in April and May 2023 as part of a capstone project for a friend’s Masters in Christian Formation.

• Sarah ran a book club for six months with a focus on Christian Formation.

• Luciene preached 1-3 Sundays/month at her local church whilst the pastor was sick and preached several times in the year at a church ladies’ group that meets in town.

• One person ran regular Bible Studies for an immigrant family who recently became Christians.

• One person did online teaching others (locally and internationally) how to teach English as a second language.

• One of the Cardiff team is training in member care and hopes to use that to serve in the future.

• One couple in Cardiff on the team is training to serve with Church planting locally.

• The Cardiff team is involved in ‘Firestarters’ - a youth programme where they offer preaching, teaching and worship.

Christian Ministry and Outreach

Both teams have been involved in several local projects in cooperation with other Christian organisations and churches. Each of team members finds local projects they want to get involved in and take the initiative to do so. A selection of these ongoing ministries include:

• Working with the supply of management staff and provision of volunteers to our local Wrexham Foodbank and Cardiff food market. Additionally weekly support at a satellite giving out packages and praying with people.

• Helping to run a Baby Basics Wrexham which gives large hampers of baby clothing and supplies to family in need in our locality. Nearly 40 hampers were made up for expectant mums this year.

• Delivering regular child-focussed ministry in the Wrexham locality and engaging with coordinated activity with a local church to help support families with children – both by inviting to and staffing the clubs and events.

• Strengthening networks in Cardiff through support, facilitation, input and logistic to multiple churches – serving in ministries, doing admin, coordinating events, serving church plans.

• • Providing practical support to other outreach organisations in Wrexham and Cardiff. One example is Rainbow of Hope a ministry in Cardiff for homeless and asylum seekers.

• Involved in Street Pastors in Cardiff, serving those who are enjoying a night out in the city centre.

• Befriending ministries to many individuals – both Christian and not, both formalised and through friendship. One example is how one person regularly walks her neighbour’s dog since she can’t do it herself. Another is how one person has clients through Family Friends for up to 3 months at a time who she sees weekly for support.

• Sending staffing support to a Take a Break Holiday for Single Parents, a week-long residential camp with Care for the Family.

• IT & training support for a Wrexham-based pregnancy counselling charity.

• Making and delivering hot meals to needy families as well as cold meals for kids in a lowincome youth club during half-term and summer breaks.

• Participating in worship teams at more than one church.

• Doing student ministry, worship ministry, prayer ministry and kids ministries with and for more than one local church in Cardiff.

• Wrexham team members continued up weekly meetings with Ukrainian families and have done some ministry in their village together.

• Jo, through Christians Together in Wrexham, spearheaded a town centre wide Nativity Trail with over 10 artistic takes on the nativity story for locals to enjoy as well organising a town-wide prayer evening and also improving their website and helping with town-wide communications.

• Sarah organised and hosted a 3-day retreat in October 2022 for other mums leading YWAM teams - creating rich time of fellowship and spiritual formation.

• YWAM Cardiff regularly walks in the city centre meeting homeless in the streets, giving food, a chat and prayer.

Achievements and performance

Our activities this year have been in full accordance with our objects and purposes as laid out above. During the year we focussed on opportunities to provide support to local families and people through our activities with established charities and churches in Wrexham and Cardiff.

The Wrexham team has continued monthly prayer and fasting sessions as part of their weekly team meeting rhythm and they continue to date. The Wrexham and Cardiff teams each also meet every week for meals together and worship, prayer and discipleship.

As the year continued, the Wrexham team did further work on the amazing premises that God has given us, Gair y Gwynt, in Wrexham and made further improvements to the interior in line with our policy to be good stewards of all that God provides. Wrexham have a vision to use the building to host people, families and groups. A few notable examples - a YWAM London faith team, several families of missionaries having an affordable holiday, Riding Lights theatre group during their Wrexham performances, a staff team for a Christian Formation course having a retreat and more. They and the many other guests we host often remark that many who visit are touched by the hospitality offered and are also blessed by the spiritual atmosphere they experience which we believe has been created by the amount of prayer, worship and the positive and intentional community we seek to create. The local university Christian Union met in GyG for several months this year too. On longer-term basis’, we also had a renter in the YWAM Wrexham property from August 2022 to May 2023, a Ukrainian refugee for a few months, and a missionary from YWAM Scotland had 3 months sabbatical in Spring 2023.

In Cardiff, besides establishing all new rhythms of team prayer, intercession and community through meeting regularly. They have been networking with a variety of churches and ministries – more than 10 groups would consider them partners and supporters. YWAM Cardiff also ran a worship event in a church in the Spring.

The Cardiff team has received several outreach teams from YWAM Rostrevor and YWAM London Urban Key. They were involved in many of the local ministries the team has been doing like church partnerships, running children’s programmes, youth teaching, street evangelism and prayer appointments.

YWAM Cymru/Wales is a part of a YWAM area team called WISE (Wales, Ireland, Scotland, England) and both teams participated in several Zoom online meetings. Additionally we’re a part of the wider connection circle in Europe and a few people from each team attended a large fourday gathering in February 2023 in England called the European Leadership Gathering with over twenty European nations represented.

We celebrate diversity with YWAM Cymru/Wales – we have Canadian, Brazilian, American, German and Argentinean people serving on our teams and board in addition to Brits. Our board and teams have a mix of genders holding a variety of roles. Both team leaders have committed to learning and speaking Welsh and at least 3 of our missionaries speak English as a second language. We make space on our both teams for complex medical conditions and disabilities by creating positive working conditions to serve as they are able.

Plans for future years

YWAM Cardiff, hopes to find a building to buy or rent in the coming 1-2 years. They are praying for a House of Connection and Hospitality, with a prayer room, big kitchen to invite people for meals , a room to offer prayer appointments/ spiritual direction and a couple of rooms to receive outreach teams or / and missionaries in short term basis. One of the team is training in member care and hopes to use that to serve in the future. One couple on the team is training to serve with Church planting locally.

YWAM Wrexham has vision to continue using their YWAM building to host teams, families and groups. The team hopes to capitalise on the good things happening in Wrexham with a winning football team and our Hollywood owners. A long-term staff member in Wrexham, Luciene, is planning for a 6-7 month sabbatical in 2024 and will attend a YWAM school of counselling ministry in Switzerland as part of it and dreams of using these news skills to better support and serve people in Wrexham.

Both YWAM Cardiff & Wrexham are looking to be involved in ‘THE SEND UK & Ireland’ which will have events happening in 2024-2025.

Changes in Trustees & Members

There were changes during the September 2022 to August 2023 year. We invited Sue Pratt to join the board in May 2023 and she attended our June 2023 meeting with a view and in the summer of 2023 decided she’d like to accept. She will be voted on in our next board meeting in October 2023. In Summer 2023, Luke Howson, our chairperson, announced his intention to step off the board from February 2024 so the search has begun for another trustee and chairperson. We added no new members, though Erika from Cardiff team will be invited to the October board meeting with a view to membership.

Trustees’ responsibilities

Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of its financial activities for that year. In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to:

• a) select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;

• b) make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

• c) state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;

• d) prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to assume that the charity will continue in operation.

The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud or other irregularities.
