Structure, governance and management
Youth With A Mission Cymru/Wales is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) foundation registered on 7[th] December 2015 with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
This is the sixth annual report and accounts prepared by the charity. In previous years YWAM Wales has operated under Youth With A Mission Limited (charity number 264078), and relations are still strong with this ‘sister charity’.
New trustees are appointed by the current trustees in accordance with the governing instrument.
Public benefit
The charity trustees have complied with the duty in section 4 of the 2006 Charities Act to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers and duties.
Objectives and activities
The purposes of the charity are:

The advancement of the Evangelical Christian Faith in Wales and elsewhere in the United Kingdom or abroad as the trustees may from time to time think fit.

To advance education in accordance with Christian principles in the said country and elsewhere in the United Kingdom or abroad as the trustees may from time to time think fit.

• To promote and fulfil such other charitable purposes beneficial to the community in the said country and elsewhere in the United Kingdom or abroad as the trustees may from time to time think fit.
To fulfil these purposes the charity has carried out the following activities during the year:
Introduction
The 2021-22 year was one of transition for YWAM Cymru/Wales. Our long-time national leaders, Mark & Sue Vening, spent 3 months away exploring a call to another nation and then shortly thereafter left to move to Panama in December 2021, and with no replacements emerging it meant the remaining team members and trustees were needed to help fulfil additional roles vacated by the Venings.
Our Wrexham team leaders, Sarah & Bob Opper, went on sabbatical for the first half of 2022. Since then Bob has stepped back from leading the team and Sarah is now leading it. One team member, Mari, began maternity leave in June 2021 after the joyful arrival of their son Luca. Another Wrexham team member had a major lung clot removal surgery which required nearly 6 months off work though she is thankfully back part-time and recovering nicely.
As the Cardiff team moved into their first full year of pioneering they were beset with frequent and significant illness which has taken its toll in time available and energy levels. They had some team members join and one team member depart.

The team we had hoped to establish in Swansea will not be happening after both couples involved have stayed in or moved back to Brazil. We continue to hope for more locations in Wales but at the time of writing there are no specific plans developing.
The number of activities and events we were able to run was therefore impacted by all of the above.
Christian Training and Education
Several of our missionaries have been engaged in teaching, speaking and preaching ministries, in at least six different churches in Wrexham and Cardiff as well as in other missionary training centres. Of particular note, one Wrexham team member taught English to two refugee foster children of another team member for several months. Another team member, Lidia, taught on two training programmes in YWAM Northern Ireland. Our commitment to Christian training and education has continued throughout the year.
We have developed some online mechanisms to do this as the pandemic hit back in 2020 and are now regularly using technology to deliver our material. For example, Jo regularly teaches others how to teach English as a second language and co-led a UofN approved TESOL course online. Another team member, Sarah, participated in a year-long distance learning programme focused on spiritual formation. In another instance, one team member was able to offer training for over 10 different Christian charities on the topic of visa compliance.
Christian Ministry and Outreach
Both teams have been involved in several local projects in cooperation with other Christian organisations and churches. Each of team members finds local projects they want to get involved in and take the initiative to do so. A selection of these ministries include:

Working with the supply of management staff and provision of volunteers to our local Wrexham Foodbank and Cardiff food market

Helping to run a Baby Basics Wrexham which gives large hampers of baby clothing and supplies to family in need in our locality

Delivering regular child-focussed ministry in the Wrexham locality and engaging with coordinated activity with a local church to help support families with children – both by inviting to and staffing the clubs and events

Running a youth club and youth refugee club in a nearby town to Wrexham in partnership with a local church
-
Providing practical support to other outreach organisations in Wrexham. One example is Stepping Stones a charity in Wrexham offering support to those dealing with the trauma of abuse or Rainbow of Hope a ministry in Cardiff for homeless and asylum seekers

Teaching (online) others how to teach English as a second language

Involvement with Fire Starters in Cardiff which is a youth ministry for churches

Befriending ministries to many individuals – both Christian and not. One example is how Jo regularly walks her neighbour’s dog since she can’t do it herself.

Sending staffing support to a Take a Break Holiday for Single Parents, a week-long residential camp with Care for the Family

IT & training support for a Wrexham-based pregnancy counselling charity

Making and delivering hot meals to needy families as well as cold meals for kids in a lowincome youth club during half-term and summer breaks

- Doing student ministry, worship ministry, prayer ministry and kids ministries with and for more than one local church in Cardiff
Achievements and performance
Our activities this year have been in full accordance with our objects and purposes as laid out above.
During the year we focussed on opportunities to provide support to local families and people through our activities with established charities and churches in Wrexham and Cardiff.
In March 2022, Jackie from the Wrexham team went to Romania to serve alongside those helping with refugees from the Ukraine and then, along with her husband Tim, helped start ‘Ceiriog Valley Welcomes Ukraine’ and practically helped several Ukrainian families with their move to the UK. They also started up weekly meetings with Ukrainian families and have done some ministry in their village together.
The Wrexham team began monthly prayer and fasting sessions as part of their weekly team meeting rhythm and they continue to date.
As the year continued, the Wrexham team did further work on the amazing premises that God has given us, Gair y Gwynt, in Wrexham and made further improvements to the interior in line with our policy to be good stewards of all that God provides. Wrexham have a vision to use the building to host people, families and groups. A few notable examples - the leadership team from another YWAM centre had a five-day retreat at the property in February 2021 and a prayer team from yet another YWAM centre stayed for a few days. They and the many other guests we host often remark that many who visit are touched by the hospitality offered and are also blessed by the spiritual atmosphere they experience which we believe has been created by the amount of prayer, worship and the positive and intentional community we seek to create.
Wrexham hosted one DTS outreach team in April 2022 who were predominantly engaged in children and youth ministry through local schools and churches. They also led some times of intercession and worship in different settings. They provided a lot of spiritual encouragement to all they met. They also served several days at Bronydd, a property being developed for restoration ministry by team members Tim & Jackie.
A notable achievement in Spring 2022 was Wrexham team member Luciene passing her Life in the UK test and then successfully applying for and being granted Indefinite Leave to Remain. Team members like Luciene who have been committed for many years and see themselves staying in Wales to minister Jesus’ love and compassion are a real encouragement to us all.
In Cardiff, besides establishing all new rhythms of team prayer, intercession and community through meeting regularly have been networking with a variety of churches and ministries. They have gotten involved with ministries like Urban Crofters (Church in Wales) which runs a café as an outreach to the community, Rainbow of Hope, a ministry to homeless and asylum seekers and partnered with Fire Starters, a youth ministry.
The Cardiff team has received several outreach teams from YWAM Rostrevor, YWAM London and a church in the USA. They were involved in many of the local ministries the team has been doing.

YWAM Cymru/Wales is a part of a YWAM area team called WISE (Wales, Ireland, Scotland, England) and both teams participated in several Zoom online meetings and a few people from each team attended a large four-day gathering in May 2022 in England with all 4 YWAM nations represented.
Plans for future years
YWAM Cardiff, hopes to find a building to buy or rent in the coming 1-2 years. They are praying for a House of Connection and Hospitality, with a prayer room, big kitchen to invite people for meals , a room to offer prayer appointments/ spiritual direction and a couple of rooms to receive outreach teams or / and missionaries in short term basis.
YWAM Wrexham has vision to continue using their YWAM building to host teams, families and groups. Sarah is planning to organise and host a 3 day retreat in October 2022 for other mums leading YWAM teams - creating rich time of fellowship and spiritual formation. We started having a renter in August 2022 and are likely to host at least one missionary on a two month sabbatical in Spring 2023.
Changes in Trustees & Members
There were no changes during the year, but after the year-end there were some changes to Trustees and Members as follows. In December 2022 our National Convenors, Mark and Sue Vening (founding trustees), resigned from the board and moved to Panama as missionaries in January 2022 with their family. Luke Howson has taken over from Mark as Chair of Trustees, and we welcomed Lidia Lammardo, leader of the Cardiff team, onto our Board. We also marked the addition of members Jo Dunbar and Tim & Jackie Latham in February 2022 (minutes need to be amended during our AGM to reflect this).
Financial review
Total income for the year was £17,725 (2021 - £13,536). The principal sources of income were donations received £8,414 (2021 - £5,119) and contributions received from YWAMers £7,519 (2021 - £6,150) during the year.
Total expenditure for the year was £13,483 (2021 - £12,863). The main areas of expenditure related to running costs of the YWAM house in Wrexham.
At the end of the year the charity reserves were £15,879 which are all unrestricted.
As a reserves policy, the charity should have enough unrestricted funds to cover three months’ running costs at any given time, which would equate to approximately £2,500.

Trustees’ responsibilities
Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of its financial activities for that year. In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to:

a) select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;
-
b) make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
-
c) state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
-
d) prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to assume that the charity will continue in operation.
The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud or other irregularities.
