Winslow Men in Sheds Chairman’s Report for 2023

We have now been here for 8 years. We are still drinking coffee and tea, we are still managing to eat our way through a vast amount of assorted biscuits, we are still putting the world to right every morning. We are still repairing items for the public and we are still making new items that have been requested. Cars are being rebuilt and we saw the Citroen 2CV back on the road during 2023.

Once again in my Chairman’s report, I feel it important to emphasise that the Shed’s main purpose is to provide a social hub in a supportive way for men with time on their hands or those in need of social contact.

We are also very pleased to still have MK Sailability on site doing boat maintenance and providing sailing opportunities for anyone with disabilities. This year Milton Keynes guys, next year the University Boat race.

We also had a very successful day at the Winslow Bank Holiday Show. The show gives us the opportunity to talk to the Winslow community and to encourage some of the older men to join us. Our speciality on the stand was once again that of wood turning, not quite the wood turning you might expect but turning blocks of wood upside down from one end to the other in the shortest time possible for a cash prize. We had a good profit from the game.

Once again, Winslow Shed was delighted to be able to provide a selection of freshly sharpened and restored carpentry tools for Vron Corben’s latest trip to Malawi. The tools were presented to young trainees at a trade college in the community where Vron has established a much valued and supportive partnership. But with only a standard airline baggage allowance to juggle with, the lathe had to be left behind

Thanks to funding from the Winslow and Villages Community Board, we have installed a defibrillator outside the Shed. It's now fully operational and registered with the emergency services who have the key code to open the cabinet if needed. We've told local businesses and residents that as well as being there for Men In Sheds Winslow, it's there for them to use in an emergency

We made around 30 bird boxes of various designs for the Sir Thomas Freemantle School in Winslow as a way of the school raising funds for their allotment - each bird box had the name of a sponsor on it.

Another request for 40 boxes followed from Greening Padbury Group. In total this year sponsored or otherwise, we came close to or more than a 100 boxes.

When it comes to different projects, we were asked by MK Rotary if we could make them a sleigh on wheels. We took the project on and it was completed well in time for Christmas

We have also delivered perhaps our strangest order to date – a set of fully functioning ‘village stocks! Before anyone gets the wrong idea, these were for the Friends of Mursley, Swanbourne and Drayton Parslow Schools for use at their summer fete.

Due to a fire at the premises of the local undertakers, Heritage and Sons, their garage area was destroyed so we offered them space to store their funeral cars in the second warehouse which they accepted with thanks and have been there for the remainder of 2023. We are thinking about asking for special rates for shed members when required.

So, we have built bird boxes, bat boxes, a sleigh, a set of stocks, repaired benches, built bike obstacles, repaired a see saw, worked on cleaning up some bookshelves for Winslow school and much more.

The Town Christmas Fair on the 30[th] November proved to be a worthwhile event to attend as we sold many tree decorations along with bird boxes again despite the hot wine and burgers etc.

MISW also remains registered as a Warm Welcome Space (re-branded from ‘Warm Space’) for the year 2023 even though we are not aware of any take-up currently.

Turning our thoughts to finance we have made a surplus during the year but I will leave this part to Colin to explain in more detail but we recruit new members quite often so more £10’s rolling in

With regard to our position with the premises, the future remains totally uncertain but at this moment, we believe that we are secure for at least another year or maybe longer
