Our main fundraising focus remains the St Grade Church restoration project, and more specifically its first phase, the St Grade Roof Appeal, costed at £100K. We had hoped that 2022 would see us near to achieving that target, because once 50% was raised, we would become eligible for ‘matched funding’ awards from the larger grant-making trusts. Once again, however, external events intervened to make our task more difficult. The spiraling price of building materials meant that the re-roofing work was re-costed at £140K, and by the end of 2022 we were still just short of the halfway mark, having raised around £68.3K (including £10K of ‘pledged’ grants, to be allocated once work began). However, as indicated under the heading ‘Capital Costs’ in the Accounts, we were able to pay for two items on the estimated bill – initial surveying fees from Scott & Co (£3069.30) and an advance purchase of roof slates from the building contractors Gloweth Ltd (£5544.00), allowing participants in our ‘Buy a Slate’ Appeal to have the slates inscribed with their own personal dedication before installation on the church roof. These two items, totalling £8,613.30, should be regarded as advance payments, reducing accordingly the sum that remains to be raised. On this basis, we have in fact already raised 50% of the target sum.
Our fundraising efforts brought in just over £12K in 2022. Income from our ‘Buy a Slate’ appeal and from merchandise remained buoyant, but nearly half of the total raised came from diverse fundraising events – Jubilee Flower Trail, summer and winter Jazz concerts, Cream Teas in the garden, a silent Art Auction, raffles and cake stalls. Also, thanks to the generosity of our local theatre group Ruan Revellers, all the proceeds of their Christmas production came to us. These activities contributed nearly £6K, reflecting the strength of the community support our campaign enjoys. For this reason, and despite the adverse circumstances, we can look forward with confidence to 2023.
