## **Annual Trustees Report 2021**

The focus of all our activity this year has been the St Grade Church Restoration Appeal. Having received five tenders for the restoration work at the end of 2020, we decided to accept the tender from Gloweth Ltd and set our projected fundraising target at £350K. However, it was also agreed with the contractor and with our surveyors, Scott & Co, that the work would be broken down into three phases, each costed at approximately £100K. The first of these, the total replacement of the roof tiles, was an essential preliminary to all the other external and internal work, and it was therefore agreed that work could begin once sufficient funds had been raised to cover this initial phase.

A key strand of our work this year was the pursuit of applications to a number of relevant grant-awarding bodies, which met with varying degrees of success. In the course of 2021 we received grants of £3K and £10K, and a further pledge of £5K once work starts (not recorded in the attached annual accounts). Several of the awarding bodies suggested ‘matched funding’ might be provided if we were already 30% or 50% of the way to our fundraising target. In the context of our revised initial target of £100K, we passed both these thresholds in the course of the year. Disappointingly, however, this did not lead to awards on the scale that the term ‘matched funding’ had led us to expect.

Nonetheless, 2021 was a very successful fundraising year given the circumstances. The relaxation of lockdown rules allowed several very successful events to be staged over the summer and autumn, often organised by other groups and individuals in support of the Grade Restoration Appeal. The ‘Buy a Slate’ campaign raised over £6K, mainly online. Membership subscriptions and merchandise sales were buoyant, and the recovery of Gift Aid on donations brought in £3.6K. It is to be hoped that this momentum can be maintained in 2022, so that work can commence on the re-roofing phase.
