## **TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT**

## **YEAR ENDED 31[ST] JULY 2023**

The Trustees, who are also Directors of the Charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present the Financial Statements of the Charity for the year ended 31[st] July 2023.

The Trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1[st] January 2015).

## **REFERENCE AND ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS**

Reference and administrative details are shown in the schedule of members of the board and professional advisers on page 3 of the financial statements.

## **THE TRUSTEES**

The Trustees who served the charity during the period were as follows:

Rev D E Flavell G M Brooks M Carter L M Vigars Dr A J Collier

The Trustees named above and on page 3 are trustees for the purposes of charity law and directors for the purpose of company law.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**

The organisation is a charitable company limited by guarantee, incorporated on 24th February 2014.

The management of the charitable company is the responsibility of the Trustees. The day-today running of the charity is carried out by the Trustees and those who attend the church. Trustees are recruited from the membership of the church.

## **RISK MANAGEMENT**

The Trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charitable company is exposed, in particular, to those related to the operations and finances of the company and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate the charity’s exposure to the major risks identified. These procedures have been reviewed and modified to ensure they continue to meet the needs of the charity.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

The objects of the church are, as stated on the Articles of the Company, to advance the Christian faith in accordance with the basis of faith in such ways and in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit for the benefit of the public.

## **HEXHAM NEW CHURCH**

## **TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT**

## **YEAR ENDED 31[ST] JULY 2023**

The principal activity of the charity, in fulfillment of these objectives, is the operation of a church in Hexham, Northumberland, under the name ‘The Point’, which meets at the Priory School in Hexham. The vision of ‘The Point’ is to be a place where people of all ages become disciples of Jesus Christ.

## **PUBLIC BENEFIT**

The church is here for the advancement of the Christian Religion, and most Sundays, there are services of Christian worship on Zoom with children’s activities and the opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ. We have not been able to meet at the school all year, but we have managed to meet outside occasionally when the lockdown conditions have permitted it.

The church supports Hexham Holiday Club, another Registered Charity, which provides a week of children’s activities in the summer. The church supports Hexham Trinity Methodist Church, another Registered Charity, in its provision of Christian youth work. The church prays regularly.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

We now feel that we have fully come out of the pandemic and this year at 'The Point' we have been using the Chrysalis Centre as our venue.

We have been able to run services to appeal to both children and adults. We have continued with Tuesday morning Bible Study and a monthly in person prayer meeting, along with a monthly event for Middle School children.

During the year we took part in Hexham Holiday Club and had many outdoor activities, including at Christmas and Easter.

Overall, it was a successful year for the Point, and we look forward to next year with confidence.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

The Trustees are pleased with the financial performance in the year and consider the church to be on a sound financial footing.

## **VOLUNTEERS**

Like most churches, many of the people of the church have been actively involved in the day to day running of the services and other activities of the church.

The Trustees are very grateful for all of the support that has been given without which it would have been impossible to operate the charity.

The members of the church have also encouraged the Trustees by their prayers and by offering advice on many aspects of the running of the church.

HEXHAM NEW CHURCH
TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT
YEAR ENDED 31ST JULY 2023
INVESTMENT AND RESERVE POLICY
As a new church, operating from rented premises, the charity does not have significant
regular outgoings and therefore has yet to establish a formal rese￿eS policy. The
Directors consider that the surplus, which is held within a bank account with HSBC
Bank, is sufficient to cover the future needs of the charity.
Given the modest value of the rese￿eS held by the charity, the Directors have not
established an investment policy, as the charity does not have any funds for investment
at present.
RELATED PARTIES
The Directors Consider that they, as Trustees, are the only related parties.
FUTURE PLANS
The church looks forward to future work in bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to
Hexham and its surroundings. We hope to return to the School at some point when
appropriate, but we may also continue our online presen￿.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF HEXHAM NEW CHURCH**

## **YEAR ENDED 31[ST] JULY 2023**

## **Independent Examiner's report to the trustees of Hexham New Church ('the Company')**

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31[st] July 2023.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity's trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:

- . accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

- . the accounts do not accord with those records; or

- . the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

- . the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities [applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)].

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached

**HEXHAM NEW CHURCH**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS**

## **YEAR ENDED 31[ST] JULY 2023**

## **1. STATUTORY INFORMATION**

Hexham New Church is a charity, registered in England and Wales. The Charity’s registered number and registered office address can be found on the charity information page.

## **2. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**

## **Basis of accounting**

The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1[st] January 2015)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

There were no material departures from that standard.

## **Income**

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Turnover reflects voluntary donations received from UK donors. In the period, income of £1,878 was received in the form of donations for the benefit of Tara, a church worker and these donations were passed on to her in accordance with the restriction applied to their use.

## **Expenditure**

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

## **Tangible fixed assets**

Depreciation is calculated to write off the cost of tangible fixed assets over their estimated useful lives:

Equipment 25% reducing balance basis Computer Equipment 33.3% reducing balance basis

## **Pension costs**

Contributions to a defined contribution pension scheme are charged to the profit and loss account in the year to which they relate.

## **Taxation**

The charity is exempt from corporation tax, as Hexham New Church is a charity registered with the Charities Commission and all of the activities of the organisation are considered by the Directors to be charitable.
