Annual Report of Trustees 1.1.19-31.12.19
The Tabernacle Chapel Morriston Trust was registered in November 2015. The Trust was established to secure the future of the Chapel building. This building is a Grade 1 Listed Building with CADW. Until such time as new trustees are appointed, or other arrangements may be made, the Tabernacle Morriston Trust will be supported by the Tabernacle Morriston Congregation Trust.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has provided a grant of £71,300 to finance development work. This is administered by the City and County of Swansea with the support of the Welsh Assembly and the Trustees of the Tabernacle Morriston Congregation Trust. Ms Jacquy Box is funded from the grant and employed by the City and County of Swansea as a part time Development Officer for the Tabernacle building. This employment has been extended to September 2020 at least.
Jacquy has prepared a Discussion Document dealing with the future of the Tabernacle giving consideration to Governance, Charity Status, the possibility of establishing a Community Benefit Society and matters relating to the transfer of the asset to the care of a new group of Trustees. A programme to increase use and activity in the extensive vestry is already in operation. This is increasing the income available. However, income falls far short of the financial demands of the maintenance of Tabernacle. A Steering Group has discussed plans for the future and a Public Meeting held to assess interest. Of those present some expressed positive interest in becoming trustees of a new body. A further meeting is planned early in 2020 after certain legal matters have been cleared. Cordelia M Hall, a solicitor with experience in asset transfer and charity law will advise on the best course of action and help clear legal issues to assist in securing the future of Tabernacle.
The Vestry has been identified as with potential to increase income further. As the present architect, Steffan Horowskyj, will be retiring shortly a new architect, Amanda Needham ,will work on plans to develop the Vestry. Such plans will form the basis of applications for funding.
50 years ago on 3[rd] July 1969 Charles, the Prince of Wales attended a Gymanfa Ganu ( Singing Festival) in Tabernacle. The event was arranged in conjunction with the Queen conferring City status on Swansea. This year, exactly 50 years to the day, the Prince made another visit to Tabernacle where he was able to learn about the future plans for Tabernacle .National and local dignitaries as well as members of other Morriston churches, organisations using the Tabernacle, contractors , the architect and local schoolchildren were present and the Prince met representatives. He unveiled a plaque to record his visits. The Prince expressed great interest in plans for the future. Following the visit, a significant donation from The Prince’s Charity was gratefully received.
During the year visits were received from local schools and other organisations as part of our educational programme. The Chapel was also used for school concerts, services and Eisteddfodau. The Tabernacle Choir, Morriston Ladies Choir and Morriston Rugby Club held concerts in the Chapel. The Chapel grounds were used to launch the 2019 Morriston Christmas Festival. Fund raising events were organised by the Development Officer, including a St. David’s Day parade.
Regular Welsh language services are held in the Chapel under the leadership of our Minister, the Rev. Jill-Hailey Harries and visiting preachers.
A team from members take care of the Chapel grounds and look after the day to day requirements of the building.
In 2018 the Tabernacle was voted Wales’ “ Favourite Church or Chapel Building” in a poll arranged by the National Churches Trust. The award ceremony was covered by S4C and Welsh news. An English viewer in Derbyshire saw the programmes and took an interest in Tabernacle. This year the viewer donated £10,000 to assist in securing the future of Tabernacle.This donation was received with gratitude and will be used effectively.
Securing the future of this Grade 1 Listed Building is no easy matter. The support of the Development Officer, Ms Jacquy Box and Local Authority staff, including Mr Paul Relf , along with the interest of our local representatives on the City and Council of Swansea is greatly appreciated by the members of Tabernacle Chapel . Chapel Deacon Mr Huw Tregelles Williams has worked tirelessly to co ordinate the work of the various agencies and individuals involved. It is hoped further significant progress in the effort to secure the future of Tabernacle will be made in 2020.

The accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of the accounts set out in the Charities ( Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
