THE DALAI LAMA CENTRE FOR COMPASSION TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020

The financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Companies Act 2006, the Objects and Articles of Association, and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015).

Structure, governance and management

The DLCC is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee governed by its Objects and Articles of Association. The DLCC registered with the Charity Commission on 20 November 2015. The DLCC is governed by the Objects and Articles of Association and is managed by a Board of Directors. The Directors are charity trustees as defined by Section 177 of the Charities Act 2011.

Objectives and Activities

The objectives of the Charity are to promote moral and spiritual improvement by advancing individuals and society’s understanding of compassion and related values such as empathy, forbearance, dignity and integrity by:

The Dalai Lama Centre for Compassion continues to focus on its educational outreach project, Compassion Matters.

From its launch in 2018 up to the end of the 2020 academic year, Compassion Matters has been delivered to 72 schools and over 7,500 learners, and these numbers continue to grow. We have developed 38 hours of learning resources that have been used by more than 100 teachers, with over 1800 hours of compassion and ethics lessons taking place in 2020. Despite the challenges presented in 2020, the project engaged with over 3800 children, an increase of 40% compared to 2019.

Other successes of 2020 included a full review and updating of the project's learning resources. Additional presentations and audio were added, together with compassion meditation and reflective practices materials. Some of these new resources were developed in partnership with SEE Learning (https://seelearning.emory.edu/). The Compassion Matters team also completed a short but illuminating review of the project's impact. This demonstrated the project's positive impact on participating children's pro-social behaviour. Working with external researchers, the team was also able to review its evidence base and educational frameworks. This has helped to clarify the outputs of the project and shape its future development.

Unsurprisingly, 2020 was a unique year for Compassion Matters, with the challenges presented by the Covid 19 pandemic, including schools closures between March-May and most staff being furloughed between March-August. Practically, the project needed to adapt to this new environment and a strategic change of resource allocation, together with a change of focus, was made to ensure that, at this time of international crisis, the project's message of compassion was delivered to as many children and young people as possible via our online resources. Despite this we

To this end, we quickly adapted our resources away from classroom delivery to home learning so that schools and other providers could continue to use our materials within their lessons during the national lockdown. This had major benefits. Alongside our ongoing work with schools, Compassion Matters was able to partner with IntoUniversity (https://intouniversity.org/) to bring its materials to 600 disadvantaged young people during the initial phase of the pandemic. The focus on web-based outreach was and continues to be of the utmost importance to the project. Moreover, our partnerships with multiple charities, academic trusts and other organisations have helped Compassion Matters to reach more children, develop new learning materials and reach new potential supporters.

The Trustees met four times during the financial year 2020 and reviewed strategy, finance, safeguarding, GDPR and risk management as they considered appropriate.
