Neruka’s Soul Food Soup Kitchen Chair Report 2020
The year 2020 started almost the same as the past ten years for Neruka's Soul Food Soup Kitchen. We cooked delicious home style meals every Wednesday for 30 to 45 people; who were free to socialise with each other. There was always lots of lively conversations and the occasional banter between friends.
We had themed workshops, support with benefit applications and housing support from Learning Partnership, quizzes, puzzles and colouring books.
Then came COVID19 and everything changed. Its hard believe that there was a time before "face masks and social distancing: or regulars of seven to eight years popping by for a sit down meal and a friendly catch up with the other regulars.
Lock down caused a lot of immigrant families to lose their sources of income, which saw Neruka's Soul Food Soup Kitchen providing up to 200 meals and food parcels to individuals and families: most of whom had never sought this kind of support before.
Thankfully, with government funding provisions; we received amazing support and with many workers on furlough, we had new volunteers. We also made great new connections with other Food providers in Harehills and Chapeltown, formed a network so we could share resources and support each other.
I even got nominated for the Queen's Award for voluntary Service (QUAVS). This was such an honour!
A few of our friends have been lost to the COVID19 VIRUS and some have recovered. Our older volunteers no longer able to serve with us as they are having self isolate, which could present another worry of loneliness and mental ill health. Neruka's Soul Food Soup Kitchen is now planning to set up an online listening Service to support people from African and Caribbean heritage who need non professional support. Volunteers will receive training in reflective listening and trauma awareness. We are hoping to launch this service by mid 2021.
Neruka's Soul Food Soup Kitchen hope to continue reaching those in need with first of all emergency food, friendship, training and help with preparing for employment. With our new generation of volunteers, we're managing to grow our abilities to do more and expand our reach.
