## **Annual Report for the Year Ending 5 April 2024**

as approved at the Annual Ecclesial Business Meeting

of Clevedon Christadelphians on 17 October 2024

## **Structure and Administration**

Clevedon Christadelphians was entered on the Register of Charities on 19 November 2015. Registered charity number: 1164479

Our governing document was amended to correct our activities post covid and due to the demographic changes which have occurred in recent years. It was accepted by Charities Commission and entered on the register on 22 Mar 2023 and is listed as “CONSTITUTION ADOPTED 16 APR 2015 AS AMENDED ON 20 OCT 2022 as amended on 04 Dec 2022”.

“CLEVEDON CHRISTADELPHIANS” is an Unincorporated Association. It is an autonomous Christian group managed by the Arranging Committee (trustees). The organising of many activities is shared by a number of members. During the year the Arranging Committee met monthly[a] and four “Business Meetings” open to all members were held. All decisions of the Arranging Committee were ratified at a Business Meeting. All members holding positions of responsibility were elected by the annual ballot and trustees appointed at the Annual General Meeting 19 Oct 2023.

The annual ballot and AGM appoints persons holding office from 1 Jan – 31[st] December the following calendar year ie the AGM on 19 Oct 2023 accepted the annual report for the financial year from 6 Apr 2022 to 5 Apr 2023 and appointed trustees for the period 1[st] January-31[st] December 2024. Consequently it would be possible for a change of trustee to occur during the year covered by this report. However, this did not happen.

## **Property**

The address of Clevedon Christadelphians is:

Clevedon Christadelphians Coleridge Vale Road North Clevedon North Somerset BS21 6NL

As an unincorporated association, the ownership of property is not permitted, hence the ownership of our hall is vested in two current holding trustees.

On 22 April 2015 the Land Registry issued a grant of Possessory Title for this property to the Holding Trustees:

- David C Cross

- Reginald D King

- Michael Lockett (deceased 27/02/21)

Replacement and additional Holding Trustees have now been agreed but legal notification remains outstanding.

- David Robert Edmonds (from 01/01/15)

- Andrew Leslie James (from 01/01/20)

- Teresa Mary James (from 01/01/21)

- Sarah Ellen Lake (from 01/01/22)

- Robin William Gillingham (from 17[th] January 2022)

These officers were all confirmed when the annual ballot was approved unanimously at the Annual General Meeting of the Church held on 19[th] October 2023.

## **Membership**

The year started with 26 members and ended with 27. We were pleased to welcome two members by transfer from the Christadelphian Church in Newport but were saddened by the unexpected sudden death of one of our members.

## **Charity Objects**

The charity's objects (the objects) as agreed with the Charities Commission of England & Wales are:

- to advance Bible-based Christian faith to the glory of God and the honour of Jesus Christ in accordance with the Christadelphian Birmingham Amended Statement of Faith for the benefit of members of the public and the worldwide Christadelphian community particularly in and around North Somerset by means of:

   - holding meetings, open to the public, for worship, prayer, breaking of bread by Christadelphians and Bible teaching;

   - preaching to the public through personal engagement and/or by invitations to preaching/teaching meetings and/or by other means;

   - engaging with the local public through the provision of Sunday School, youth club(s), coffee mornings and/or other occasional activities;

   - engaging with the wider Christadelphian community and wider public through periodic collections for charitable needs, including collections for relief of suffering throughout the UK and worldwide where appropriate; and

   - serving, to the extent feasible, the pastoral and other welfare needs of ecclesial members and others.

## **Aims and Public Benefit**

Clevedon Christadelphians aim to provide a place for Christian Worship and activities which flow from a commitment to following the Lord Jesus Christ.

During the year, many of our activities, which had previously been curtailed by Covid 19 restrictions, and restarted last year, have continued but with restricted frequency mainly due to the age and health of the organisers and the changed demographic post Covid.

Clevedon Christadelphians - Annual Report number 10 Page 2 of 4

However, our Sunday communion services have continued each week, where many members were able to attend in person whilst some others joined using Zoom. One benefit of this was participation of the wider Christadelphian community without producing significant GHG emissions due to travelling large distances by using Zoom for speakers from further away.

We also continued the following activities:

- Contributing to a wide range of Charities, including Christadelphian and non-Christadelphian Charities

- Providing pastoral care to members and neighbours where possible.

## **Activities**

In addition to our Sunday morning communion services, a Bible study class took place most Thursday evenings, again via zoom. This has proven to be well supported with considerable environmental benefits over meeting in person as happened prior to the pandemic.

Sunday School was held in person during School terms. However, due to reduced membership, we now have only one class which takes place during the Sunday Morning Service at 11,15am.

Youth Group has struggled to meet in person due to the availability of its members. It has been decided that this will not continue beyond the end of the academic year. This will be removed from our charitable objects in due course.

Prayer meetings were also held at monthly intervals on Sundays, in person and on zoom.

Communal “Fellowship” lunches were again held in person when numbers made these viable.

Successful charitable events took place during the year:

- Cream Teas were held in July and Sept in aid of the Children’s Hospice South West, as were the weekly coffee mornings. A total of £637 was raised from these events.

- Again we took part in The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Appeal. This was especially poignant as a number of our members underwent treatment for cancer during this year. £149 was raised at this event

- During November the Church again was a “Drop Off” point for shoeboxes. Numbers of boxes were slightly increased this year. The charity “Samaritan’s Purse” by means of “Operation Christmas Child” collects and distributes a huge number of shoeboxes filled with toys for disadvantaged children in many countries around the world. 227 gifts of love were collected at Clevedon and passed on to the local centre in Cardiff.

Once again we had a stand at the Clevedon Flower Show where, in addition to publicising our activities, we provided some craft activities for children under the theme “God is Love” – the children colouring a supply of wooden hearts to be worn as a pendant or to be displayed as a fridge magnet. This was as popular as ever and it allowed the opportunity to talk to the parents whilst the children were busy being creative. We consider this to be our main outreach event of the year and want to continue as long as our resource permits.

## **Supporting Charities**

In addition to one off activities such as helping with Operation Christmas Child, members of

Clevedon Christadelphians - Annual Report number 10 Page 3 of 4

Clevedon Christadelphians made regular contributions of money to a whole range of charitable causes. Some focus mainly on Christadelphians, such as the Christadelphian Care Homes, whilst others, such as Christadelphian Meal a Day, reach out more widely – typically to help orphanages or provide clean water in deprived areas of Africa. Regular contributions are also made to the Christadelphian Samaritan Fund which sends contributions to charities such as D.E.C. and Oxfam as dictated by world events. We have also been supporting the Clevedon Foodbank with both manpower and donations. Over £2723 was donated this way.

## **Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults**

Clevedon Christadelphians has a DSL, deputy DSL and a safeguarding group demonstrating our commitment to the importance of Safeguarding. The DSL, deputy and members of the team attended the annual training provided by the Christadelphian Support Network.

Our Safeguarding policies were reviewed and meetings of the Safeguarding group have continued.

## **Health and Safety, Risk Assessments, Food Hygiene and Data Protection**

Systems are continuing to ensure that good practice is maintained in all of these aspects of the administration of this small Church.

## **Improvements to the property**

For a number of years, it had been planned to improve our toilet facilities and incorporate a Part M Compliant Accessible toilet. The works started in March 2023. The Christadelphian Hall & Buildings Society funded the works, giving £12,500 during the previous financial year (to 5 Apr 2023) and the balance of £20,810 in the current financial year ending 5 Apr 2024.

The works, which started on 20 March 2023, were carried out in two phases. Phase 1- the construction of an additional toilet and enhanced storage facilities off the Youth Activities Room. This reduced the floor area of the kitchen but with additional cupboards and worktop actually made the kitchen more usable. However, for the first few weeks of the year, the kitchen was out of action and temporary facilities were set up in the main hall to allow activities to continue, although Coffee Mornings and Sunday School were postponed during phase 1.

When phase 1 was complete, the focus turned to the entrance hall. This was taken out of service with access to the kitchen, youth activities room, the new store room and toilets as well as the main hall being by the ramp to the rear door. Two of the existing toilets were made into one Part M compliant accessible facility and the third refurbished. All of the toilets have been refurbished with uPVC cladding to the walls, automatic lighting and connected to the building heating/hot water facilities. The ceiling in the entrance hall was lowered and new LED lighting installed to match that installed in the refurbished toilets. In addition internet enabled thermostats have been installed allowing the heating for the whole building to be controlled remotely, removing the requirement to physically journey to the building to reprogramme the heating when events change, thus again saving resources and emissions. The works were completed during the year, and everyone agrees they are a big improvement. Events which were interrupted, have resumed with no impact on attendance.
