Great Barr. War Memorial Hall Trustees Report
On behalf of the Trustees of the Memorial Hall I submit this report covering the period from October 2020 until October 2021.
This period was very much governed by the Covid Pandemic and this certainly applied to all similar venues. There was a virtual lockdown for a substantial period of the year. However in relation to the Memorial Hall full advantage was taken of the free time and I outline as follows. It was discovered that the hall needed major works carried out on the main structure of the building, roof, internal workings and electrics. Many known competent and reliable people within the building industry were known to the trustees and they were approached and their skills and knowledge sought to bring about a solution to the problems. Agreements were made with all necessary skilled craftsmen and trades people for their services at a favourable rate to the Hall whereby they would be paid by the day at a much reduced rate to their normal charge. The trustees agreed to manage the renovations and repairs. Work commenced January 2021 and continued until May 2021 with minor works carried out after that time.
Briefly the work carried out on the hall included removal up to four feet of the complete frontage and side of the hall. The wooden structure being replaced by a brick built structure. New drains were created, new flooring in a meeting room, roofing repairs carried out and new soffits, fascias and guttering affixed. The complete electrical lighting system replaced internally and externally to a cost efficient LED electrical system. New fire doors were also fitted. Internally the complete interior was decorated, gents, ladies and disabled toilets, entrance foyer, meeting room, main hall and kitchen. In addition the kitchen was refitted with new sink, work surface and units. Externally that was also decorated, which in itself took several days.
In relation to the success of the rebuild of the hall, two examples are that a previous quote for the roof, soffits etc to be fitted was between nine and nine and a half thousand pounds. Through knowledge of good reliable tradesmen the same jobs were carried with perhaps superior quality materials for approximately four thousand pounds. The second example is the electrics which were carried out by the electrician who supervised the electrics into the new Birmingham Library. He alone spent in excess of three weeks in the hall and through his contacts all
the lighting was provided, including emergency lighting and it was all LED new equipment and the costs were less than five thousand pounds. These electrical issues fully examined and signed off. The whole project took several months and the first event to be held in the hall after relaxation of the Covid Restrictions were the local elections of 2021.
I also wish to point out, although no events were being held at the Hall, great credit must be acknowledged to the Secretary of the Memorial Hall Mrs Brenda HATFIELD, Mrs Hatfield spent days if not weeks applying for locally offered grants and was very successful in obtaining a number of these grants which has offset the large expense of the refurbishment. Mrs Hatfield also assisted with the project management for which the trustees are very grateful.
Since the relaxing of the Covid restrictions the Hall has been fulfilling more and more bookings with many numerous comments complementing the hall on it’s new appearance. There are still other projects to be considered within the hall and I am sure that these, finance allowing, will be carried out as soon as practicable.
Great Barr Memorial Hall remains, solvent, viable and a benefit to the community.

Independent examiner's report on the accounts I report to the trustees of the Great Barr War Memorial Hall (Charity No 11644461 on the accounts for the year ended 31st October 2021 set out on pages 2-3. Respective responslbllltles of trustees and examiner The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144121 of the Charities Act 2011 Ithe Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to.. Examine the actounts under section 145 of the Charities Act. To follow the proceedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission lunder section 14515llbl on the Charities Act, and To state whether particular matters have come to my attention. Basis of independent examlner's statemenl My examination was carried out in accordance with Eeneral Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or distlosure5 in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concernin8 such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit. and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the atcounts present a 'true and fair, view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. Independent examlner's statement In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention I which 8ives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any materials respect, the requirements.. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act- and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met,. or 2 to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding ot the accounts to be reached.
