oMYouT CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 22/23 Ir Registered Charity Number 225891 ## **A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR** This is my first Chairman’s report and I could not write a report without acknowledging our past Chairman, David Sutton. David has been a committed member and Chairman for many years and will be a large set of boots to fill. I know that David is still a committed member of the Club and I know that I can lean on him with advice going forward. Thank you David for all that you have done for the Club for our young people and all of our valued team. Our Club is a very important facility for the Lawrence Weston area, it gives our young people a place to go and be involved in many activities. We are also open to a large age range and would love to see more older teenagers attending. As a Club it is very important that we make recommendations to our young people and encourage them to try new things and these interventions can dramatically change the course or path that young people take. It is great to now see our Club fully operational after Covid and we are excited that we have insulated and re-decorated the Gymnasium which will hopefully keep it a bit warmer going forward. This with our new Media Room should stand us in good stead for the future. We are always looking for innovated ways to encourage our young people to try different experiences. There is a great deal of attention being paid to youth work within the media at present and it is often talked about the value of youth clubs and youth workers who can encourage our young people to be creative and try new and interesting experiences. I was once this person when I lived in Moor Grove, Lawrence Weston. As a boy I attended this Club when it was a Boys Club. I enjoyed attending the Club as it stopped me from wandering the streets and gave me a focus and a place to make new friends and enjoy 5 a side football and “murder ball” in the Gym which I particularly enjoyed which lead me to play Rugby as a Prop Forward for my School. **Registered Charity Number 225891** ## **A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR** We have a fantastic team running the Club on a day to day basis, Tash, Corinne, Hayley, Eva, Ashanti and Mark make such a difference with their care and dedication to our young people. They always go above and beyond with their attitude and commitment to the Club. This year, Mark did a wonderful job re-vamping our garden space and building a barbecue which we tried successfully and we look forward to more barbecues in the future. I feel we are in a very good place with attendances high and it is very much a team effort from everyone to be involved and make our Club flourish. I am honoured to be the Chairman and I often think to myself when I was 12/13 years old that I would have no idea that I would end up being a Chairman of this Youth Club. What a fantastic honour. We also have a knowledgeable and dedicated team of Trustees with a really good mix of experience needed to take the Club forward. A big Thank You to Helen, our Club Secretary, Matt David our Treasurer, David Sutton, past Chairman and a big part of our Committee, Amy Sweet, Elizabeth Rabone and Richard King on the fundraising. The most important people in our Club are our young people who come along most evenings and take part in various activities, they are a wonderful enthusiastic bunch and they seem to have boundless energy and love of their Club. We constantly try to ask for feedback from our young people in terms of the types of activities they are involved in and what they, our young people, would like to see happen. ## **Steve Price Chairman** **Registered Charity Number 225891** ## CLUB LEADERS REPORT At last the Club is back to normal after Covid 19 and we are now fully operational, attendance numbers currently 30+ every night. AYC has become a very popular venue for young people to meet, everyone is welcome. In February 2022 we ran our normal half term Holiday Club, with the Club being opened both daytime and evening (the only Youth Club in Bristol to do both). All young people that attended in the day were provided with a free pack lunch courtesy of Fareshare. We also receive support from some local businesses, namely Greggs and Seamills Co-Op. No food is wasted, any surplus food is given out to members families that need additional help. We are very grateful for all the support the community in Lawrence Weston provide. In February DigiLocal, who are a charity to help young people develop their digital talent, mainly Scratch and Coding, started a weekly session with about 6 to 8 members. All IT equipment was brought each week by them. During our April Holiday Club Brunel Lions Club hosted “Pig Racing” another successful and exciting event for our young people. We hasten to add these are not “Real Pigs” ! We were also fortunate in May to send 8 young people to Barton Camp again, all fully funded by Clifton Rotary Club. We received great feedback from these young people, all wishing to return next year! Thanks again to Clifton Rotary. Clifton Rotary Club who run a Swimathon every year, unfortunately this was cancelled in 2022 but hopefully will return in 2023. We will enter a full team to participate and raise some money for equipment for the Clubs. One of our young people, Ashanti Ludwell, was awarded, by Brunel Lions Club, a Certificate for her voluntary work she has been doing over the past couple of years at the Club. Well done to Ashanti. During the Summer Holiday Camp we ran both day and evening sessions again, Fridays were “Trip” days, these being a visit to the Concord Museum in Bristol, Canoeing and Archery. **Registered Charity Number 225891** ## CLUB LEADERS REPORT In September 2022 the Youth Voice Group had a trip to Hannover in Germany. Three of our Club Members along with myself, Natasha, took part in this 6 day residential visit. It was an amazing experience for everyone, enjoying the different culture and cuisine. This trip was the first time abroad for a number of our young people. They met with other Youth Services in Hannover and it is hoped that the visit can be reciprocated with them coming to the UK/Bristol in the next year or so. We were recently given a donation from two of our Trustees for £400 which has allowed us to employ a Sports Coach every Tuesday evening for 12 weeks. This has been a great success and the young people are enjoying the sessions immensely. The Club will finance further sessions direct up until the end of the financial year. Looking ahead to 2023 we would like to have a more structured timetable at the Club with young people signing up specifically to activities they enjoy and to challenge themselves further in specific areas. We have our new Multi Media Room and plan to run some more structured sessions with professionals from all different areas to talk about their subject, hopefully impacting on our young people. Finally we have two young people who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, they are assisting and supporting both the staff and members on a daily basis as part of their Award, leading small Art Sessions. We welcome and encourage all our young people to volunteer and commit to helping others. We are glad to say Covid is now a distant memory and the Club has been going from strength to strength with increased numbers and new members. The Club has always run on a sound financial footing and we benefitted greatly from a repair and renovate grant from Bristol City Council. We have used this grant to repair the cracks in the Gymnasium wall and re-clad, insulate, decorate and install LCD lights. This is great news as going forward this will help reduce our energy costs. Thank you Bristol City Council. We remain thankful for the continuing guidance and support provided by our Partner, Young Bristol. The support from YB is essential to our strategies to engage young people in our community into activities at the Club and also trips away from the Club. Towards the end of the Covid restrictions the Julia and Hans Rausling Trust were very supportive of our Club and we would like to thank them for our support. This year we had David Addison retire as a Trustee of the Club, David’s dedication towards the upkeep and repair of the Club has been a tremendous benefit and asset. We would like to also thank David for his generous donation and he will always be welcome at the Club. We hope to see him attend a few of our planned barbecues. Going forward the Club has secured a long term funding grant from the John James Charitable Trust, the National Lottery Community Fund and Garfield Weston Foundation. We also have a few applications in at the moment which we are hoping to be successful on. Our Club has amazing Staff that make this Club tick, thank you to them for all their amazing work.
