## **Wellow Recreation Chairman’s Report 2020**

## 1) **What We do**

- Manage and maintain the playing field and play park on behalf

- of the Parish Council.

- Share Management of the Sports Pavilion with Wellow Valley

- Tennis

- Promote sporting and fitness activities for residents of Wellow

- and neighbouring villages.

## 2) **What have we achieved over the last year:**

- Completed the rebuilding of the children’s play park just before

- the Covid Pandemic with final snagging now scheduled for 5[th] May.

- Ensured that the play park, playing field and sports pavilion

- have complied with government Covid-19 restrictions

- Remained financially sustainable despite loss of income from

- sports groups and fund raising events.

- The Community Chest held a number of fundraising events in

- 2019 including the Sparkle Party in December and the £2k Wellow Rec share of the proceeds from these events turned out to be important and enabled us to survive one year without income

- Giles Pearman who looks after our grant applications secured

- £1165.00 from Sport England, who administered grants for government and the Lottery for the first period of lockdown when we had no income.

- New Cricket Nets – In Feb 2020 we secured £4.5k from Sport

- England to install new fixed cricket cages and complete necessary repairs to the jogging circuit following storm damage. The cricket cages were installed at the end of the Summer 2020.

- During long spells of no sport on the field, we continued to do

- our job in maintaining the sports field on behalf of the Parish Council.

- Following further drainage issues reported in Jan 2021 following

- severe rainstorms, the Parish Council agreed to put in higher capacity drainage to ensure the overflow doesn’t flood into neighbouring gardens. Mike Clarkson is working for WR together with the Parish Council.

- Parish Council funded and installed the fencing behind the goal

- mouth west end of the field next to beach trees. WR helped the parish council orchestrate the works required to replace the fence, led by Pat Cordle.

- We work well together with the various village organisations to

- make things work and the parish council work with us to make things happen when they need to.

## 3) **What are our strategic objectives for the next few years:**

## · **PROMOTE:**

- Further increase participation in sports and fitness on

- the playing field

   - § Walking football, regular boot camps, additional football nights, regular cricket attracting different clubs to use our new cricket nets

- Covid permitting, we’re hoping to hold a sparkle party

- together with the Community Chest in the second half of this year.

- Attract new talent from Duke of Edinburgh candidates

- looking to achieve their voluntary objectives to help with the promotion of WR sports. For example Notice Board ‘What’s On’ Website updates, Interviews with Sports Leaders and leverage Social Media opportunities to promote WR.

## · **GROWTH:**

- Evolve the tennis model so that WR sports are further

- utilised by Tennis and have engaged Sara Scollar & her team following a very successful Tennis Camp during the Easter break which seen the field used for this purpose.

- Increase St Julian’s after school clubs i.e. regular

- football by Raph Monday’s

- Schools Sports Day

- Pavilion usage where we’ve seen a small increase from

- commercial business, B&NES as the Polling Station for the 2021 elections, re-instate Pilates, Language classes & Children’s parties.

## · **MAINTAIN, CONTINUE & IMPROVE**

- Improve on the success of the Play Park and look to

- create a phase 2 project for the final piece of equipment as part of the initial design phase that we weren’t able to raise enough funds for during the recent project.

- Continue to work with the nominated sports leads to

- stay in touch with their requirements.

- Share success stories & experiences across all sports

Obtain feedback from the parish council and Play Park improvement initiatives and act on any actions that arise.
