Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

EcoSwell’s core belief is that both people and nature can thrive in harmony. Since 2013, we have worked to empower vulnerable communities across Peru by promoting sustainable development. Our holistic approach focuses on improving basic services essential to lifting people out of poverty, both in terms of economic stability and overall wellbeing. This vision has shaped our four key areas of expertise: ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, water and sanitation, and public health. In 2024, EcoSwell operated across the provinces of Talara, Ayabaca, and Nazca in Peru. Our efforts directly impacted 14,821 individuals in the communities of Lobitos, Piedritas, Síchez-Folchez, and Negritos in Talara province, as well as Justo Pastor in the Marcona district of Nazca, and Suyo in Ayabaca. When factoring in the broader effects of our work—both in empowering communities and protecting natural resources—our reach extends to approximately 99,586 indirect beneficiaries.

Our main achievements for 2024 across our key areas of expertise, as well as some of our other initiatives, are summarised below: Renewable Energy Energy Resilient Medical Centres Following the successful partnership between the French cable company ‘Nexans’ and their foundation, the local government and other corporate partners, in installing a Solar PV system for the Medical Centre in Talara in 2023, we were awarded follow-on projects for two additional Solar PV installations in Medical Centres. In 2024, we completed the installation of a 14.6 kWp system in the town of Suyo, Piura (impacting over 14,200 people) and are currently finishing the installation in the town of Buenos Aires, Piura (impacting over 10,000 people). These systems ensure continuous cold storage for vaccines and uninterrupted medical services during frequent power outages, exacerbated by intensifying El Niño events. Additionally, we have secured our largest funding to date with the NextEnergy Foundation from the UK, to install four Solar PV systems in Medical Posts in extremely remote villages in the Andes mountains of the Cajamarca region – the region with the lowest income per capita in Peru. This project has already begun and should be finalized by July 2026. This project will impact over 5,200 people in villages with little to no access to energy, making a monumental difference in their quality of life and health.

Solar distillers
With our volunteer interns we have continued developing, testing and
researching prototypes of solar distillers made from local materials.
These designs, shared under a creative common framework, allow
communities without technical expertise to benefit from a sustainable and
accessible solution to distil freshwater from seawater. We have two
promising prototypes that we will continue to work on in the coming
months with the aim of reaching a feasible and scalable solution.
Improved Cookstoves
We have designed and implemented four Improved Cookstoves to
support families in extreme poverty that cook using firewood. These
improved cookstoves offer a clean way to cook, using a third of the
firewood, cooking in half the time and vastly improving air quality within
households. We will continue to build more of these cookstoves every
year to support the families that need it most.

Ecosystem Restoration Ecotourism Initiatives As part of our long-term commitment to improving local environment, EcoSwell has established ecotourism trails in 2 localities: Negritos and Piedritas. We have implemented community ecotourism as part of the GiZ-EbAMar project in the town on Negritos. This locality south of Talara city features a biodiverse marine-coastal environment. 3.7km of hiking and birdwatching trails now exist here within an area of approximately 100 hectares of natural habitat in the community. This area is part of a bigger one (913 ha) that was recently declared as an Environmental Conservation Area – “ACA Balcones” – by the Provincial Municipality of Talara and managed by the District Municipality of Negritos. The existing community ecotourism trails in the locality of Piedritas have been expanded by 1.9km to the ‘Punta Malacas’ wetlands, covering a new total area of 70 hectares of land that is being preserved by local people, a promising accomplishment that allows for future ecological projects. This is of critical importance given the acute ecological crisis in the Tropical Dry Forest ecosystem, where 90% has already been historically lost. In addition this creates local income for residents in these remote towns, while respecting their traditional custodianship of the land. Environmental Education Workshops This year EcoSwell conducted a series of ecotourism and environmental education workshops, both in classrooms and out on the ecotourism trails that we built together with the local communities. In total 145 people came out to learn about biodiversity, sustainable tourism and other environmental topics. 98 from Negritos and 47 from Piedritas. This is part of the EbAMar conservation project conducted in partnership with the GiZ. Reforestation Our long-running tree-planting program in Lobitos also continued successfully throughout 2024. An additional 26 seedlings were planted in 2024, bringing the total to 4058 since 2015 Regenerative Agriculture We are building relationships with new partners to kickstart landscape restoration through planned regenerative livestock grazing. We aim to collaborate with local grazing communities, following on from the introductory Holistic Management workshops we conducted in previous years. Water and Sanitation Bioremediation 2024 saw us carry out a bioremediation pilot study in partnership with the German International Cooperation in Peru (GiZ) EbAMar Project, and groundwater surveying as a follow-up legacy of the project finished in 2023 with Geoscientists without Borders (GWB). The former has seen a vertical flow constructed wetland for wastewater bio-treatment with vetiver plants built in the town of Negritos, connected to the effluent of their wastewater treatment plant. This tested the feasibility of this additional treatment in reducing key parameters currently exceeding permissible limits in the effluent (such as BOD, coliforms and suspended solids).

Section D Achievements and performance Vetiver plants successfully established themselves and thrived in the effluent conditions. Initial data results were promising (thermotolerant coliforms reduced by 99.9%, total suspended solids reduced from 21mg/L to 3mg/L). Groundwater Surveying

The second, a groundwater geophysical survey project, consisted of EcoSwell staff training local people to survey and estimate the depth and salinity levels of the water table in some of Lobitos’ "quebradas", or dry riverbeds. One has already been mapped, while mapping of another one in the goat-herding community of Sichez remains ongoing and is the location for an eventual ecosystem restoration pilot project through regenerative livestock grazing. We aim to implement a first borehole with sustainable extraction guidelines for the local community and also treat the groundwater for salinity removal if necessary.

Public health EcoSwell’s medical volunteer internship sees our volunteer interns working alongside local staff in the Lobitos Medical Centre in treating the local population. In 2024, 12 volunteer interns conducted their placements there, for an overall total of 31 volunteer weeks. 805 residents were directly benefited as patients at the centre during this time, including medical and dental care. Furthermore, EcoSwell also donated gloves, surgical equipment, and other medical supplies to the Lobitos Medical Centre.

Partners and volunteers

In 2024, we engaged various universities across Europe and North and South America, as well as existing partners from 2023. We also saw the continuation of our volunteer internships programme, with 82 people completing volunteering placements in Peru in 2024.

Fundraising

As part of our fundraising initiatives, we obtained donations from friends and individuals who support our cause. We raised a total of GBP 532. during this period for EcoSwell UK.
