Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
EcoSwell’s core belief is that both people and nature can thrive in harmony. Since 2013, we have worked to empower vulnerable communities across Peru by promoting sustainable development. Our holistic approach focuses on improving basic services essential to lifting people out of poverty, both in terms of economic stability and overall wellbeing. This vision has shaped our four key areas of expertise: ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, water and sanitation, and public health. In 2023, EcoSwell operated across the provinces of Talara, Ayabaca, and Nazca in Peru. Our efforts directly impacted 70,262 individuals in the communities of Lobitos, Piedritas, Síchez-Folchez, and Negritos in Talara province, as well as Justo Pastor in the Marcona district of Nazca, and Suyo in Ayabaca. When factoring in the broader effects of our work—both in empowering communities and protecting natural resources—our reach extends to approximately 98,934 indirect beneficiaries. Our main achievements for 2023 across our key areas of expertise, as well as some of our other initiatives, are summarised below: Renewable Energy Electrification of Justo Pastor In partnership with ENEL Green Power, an Italian energy provider, we inaugurated a renewable hybrid microgrid for a previously unelectrified village. This project involved installing a system of solar panels and wind turbines to power 25–40 households. Additionally, EcoSwell trained locals to maintain the battery grid and established a community-based payments system to ensure spare parts and other essential equipment could be purchased when needed. This initiative impacted 160 direct beneficiaries. Energy resilience With the help of the French cable and optical fibre company Nexans and local government, we completed an Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) for the medical centre in Talara. This system ensures continuous cold storage for vaccines and uninterrupted medical services during frequent power outages, exacerbated by intensifying El Niño events. As EcoSwell’s largest project to date, it directly benefits the 57,718 people who attend the Jose Abelardo Quiñones Medical Centre yearly in Talara. Additionally, with the Next Energy Foundation, we began preparatory work for a UPS at the Suyo Medical Centre, which will directly benefit its population of 14,218.
Solar distillers
In collaboration with Fluye and Milkywire, our volunteer interns continued developing, testing and researching prototypes of solar distillers made from local materials. These designs, shared under a creative commons framework, allow communities without technical expertise to benefit from a sustainable and accessible solution to distil freshwater from seawater.
Ecosystem restoration
Tree planting
2023 saw the continuation of our tree planting programme in Lobitos and Sichez-Folchez, with the participation of 30 volunteer interns.
Ecotourism
Building on the foundations of the ecotourism project that broke ground in 2022, 2023 marked significant expansion efforts. With support from the

GIZ (German Development Bank) grant won in 2021, EcoSwell has been continuously working to safeguard the fragile and degraded wetland and dry forest ecosystems located in Piedritas and Negritos. Our project protects 52 hectares of this unique endemic forest, a hotspot for the vulnerable Peruvian plantcutter ( phytotoma raimondii) , as well as a system of four wetlands. These wetland areas are known for their rich bird diversity due to their strategic position along a migratory bird route at the westernmost point of continental South America. Many species, such as flamingoes, roseate spoonbills, and storks call this ecosystem home. However, these areas face severe threats from local clear-cutting of the carob trees for charcoal production, as well as pollution, which we will address in the next section, as part of the same project. These carob trees are keystone species, essential for the survival of other plants by trapping water in their roots during El Niño years, which experience significant rainfall. This water is then transferred to other plants through mycorrhizal systems and associated fungi.
In 2023, EcoSwell trained local ecotourism guides and established a grassroots tourism committee in Negritos. We also developed tourist trails through the hillside forests and plan to expand these routes into wetland habitats in 2024. By promoting biodiversity conservation in a region traditionally dominated by extractive industries and overfishing, we aim to demonstrate that degraded ecosystems can be restored from the ground up. These efforts directly benefited 284 individuals through the training of guides and community leaders, as well as participation in ecotourism workshops.
Water and sanitation
Bioremediation Negritos, a surf town reliant on tourism, faces pollution challenges due to an inefficient wastewater plant, which negatively impacts the local economy and ecosystem. As part of the above project with funding from the GIZ, and in partnership with municipal workers, EcoSwell is conducting a pilot study to assess the feasibility of using vetiver grass ( chrysopogon zizanioides ) for water filtration. Currently, only one tank is being tested, but with additional funding, this approach could be expanded to all tanks, drastically reducing contaminants. This project directly benefited 55 individuals, including project workers, municipal hires, community members who attended workshops and training sessions held by community leaders. Eventually, the projected impact of this project could extend to the whole population of Negritos, over 12 000 people.
Groundwater research
2023 we began planning and acquiring systems for our groundwater survey initiative in partnership with Geoscientists Without Borders. The water identified in this project will support future reforestation efforts in Lobitos. A total of 19 people were directly benefited through a community workshop and training sessions.
Public health
EcoSwell’s medical volunteer internship sees our volunteer interns working alongside local staff in the Lobitos Medical Centre in treating the local population. In 2023, 8 volunteers interns conducted their placements there, for an overall total of 31 volunteer weeks. 360 residents were directly benefited as patients at the centre during this time, including medical and dental care. donated gloves, surgical equipment, and other medical supplies to the Lobitos Medical Centre.
Community support
In partnership with ENEL, the largest private energy provider in Peru, we distributed school supply kits and Christmas baskets in Talara and Piedritas. This initiative directly benefited 3,715 people, including recipients and community members hired for distribution.
Partners and volunteers
In 2023, we engaged with 21 universities across Europe and North and South America, as well as existing partners from 2022. We also saw the continuation of our volunteer internships programme, with 88 people completing volunteer internships in Peru in 2023.
Fundraising
As part of our fundraising initiatives, we obtained donations from friends and individuals who support our cause. We raised a total of GBP 4,679. during this period for EcoSwell UK.
