Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

At EcoSwell, we firmly believe people and nature can thrive in unison. Since 2013, our organisation has helped guide vulnerable communities in Peru towards a more sustainable development. Our approach intends to impact the diverse basic services that are required to surpass the poverty status, both from a monetary and a quality-of-life perspective. This intent resulted in four areas of expertise: ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, water & sanitation, and public health.

In 2022, our impact reached 10,298 direct beneficiaries in the localities of Lobitos, Piedritas, Síchez-Folchez, Fernández Alta y Bajo, Ciudad Satélite and Talara Alta in the Talara province, Region of Piura, and Justo Pastor, Nasca province, Region of Ica. It extends to approximately 38,974 indirect beneficiaries when considering the effects of our actions in the localities we empower and natural resources we protect.

Our main achievements for 2022 in our different fronts have been summarised below:

Ecosystem restoration

In 2022 we held the final “Frontiers Champions Workshops”, as part of the Royal Academy of Engineering award our Director of Ecosystem Restoration received in 2019. These comprised a series of online and in-person events aimed at building local networks with a focus on restoring Peru’s heavily degraded equatorial dry forest, through the implementation of “Holistic Management” community visions. A total of 419 participants joined these events which took place in Piedritas, Sichez and Lobitos.
●[ During 2022 we began the implementation of a GIZ (the German ] International Cooperation) project we won in 2021. This project focusses on increasing sustainable ecotourism through birdwatching in the locality of Negritos and Piedritas – and thus helping local communities benefit economically from this whilst helping protect local species. As part of this initiative ecotourism route infrastructure was built, and wastewater treatment novel methods were tested with the aim of reducing the amount of effluents being released into the environment. These project initiatives continue in 2023.
[ As part of our volunteer internship program tree planting initiative, ] 15 trees were planted in 2022 – totalling 3,618 seedlings since we began our operations.

Renewable Energy

With the help of one of our newest partners, Nexans, in 2022 we began works to design an Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) for a Hospital in the city of Talara which serves 57,000 people. This followed the success of our Lobitos Medical Post project which was finalized in 2021. As in the case of the Lobitos medical post, this system comprises solar panels and batteries which supply power to the medical centre during power blackouts. The sizing of the Talara system is larger than the one installed at the Lobitos medical post, and as such is able to provide more power to the facility – resulting in a higher impact.

The UPS system installed at the Lobitos Medical post in 2021 continued to operate effectively during this period, providing power to the vaccine refrigeration systems during power-cuts.
Research and development continued throughout this year on our solar distiller front (frugal technology aimed at providing freshwater from sea water). A prototype was tested with a family throughout this period to determine faults during its long-term operation. This information was compiled and was used to inform our current design improvements.
Our Green Power project with ENEL which started in 2021 was the main focus of our renewables front during 2022. This is an initiative that provides green power to the Justo Pastor community, located in Ica-Peru (south of the country), through a hybrid energy microgrid. This 75 year old community had never had electricity up until this project was deployed. Workshops continued in 2022 to identify and introduce stakeholders to the management and maintenance of the community-based power grid that provides energy to multiple households and establishments. The microgrid infrastructure was put in place during 2022 up until early 2023. It became operational in February of 2023.

Water & Sanitation

Improvements to the design of our ongoing vetiver pontoon initiative, aimed at using low cost and locally sourced materials to treat wastewater ponds continued in 2022. We hosted students from Edinburgh University and Colorado State University (CSU) who researched, built and improved our pontoon design. The CSU group was our largest group to date. During this period we secured the group to join us in 2023 as well.
[ The project that we won from GIZ in 2021 also has a component ] focussed on the treatment of wastewater ponds. We are implementing a pilot solution using vetiver grass that we began designing during this period. These works continued throughout 2022.

Research & Public Health

In 2022 we continued hosting medical students who supported the Lobitos medical post. Over 100 people were treated with the help our volunteer interns during this period.
As part of our health research front, a project was designed with the help of our medical volunteers which aims to train local public health workers on the importance of nutrition. As part of this initiative, the health workers will carry out awareness raising initiatives on this topic with the communities in our areas of influence. Unsuitable nutrition is a major culprit for various medical conditions seen in our areas of operations, such as diabetes, high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The project was designed in 2022 but not implemented – we are seeking funding for this initiative in 2023.

Community support

In partnership with ENEL and as part our volunteer internship programme, we were able to deliver 1,020 food parcels as donations in the localities of Lobitos and Piedritas and the city of Talara.

In 2022 our volunteering internships programme outperformed our best year to date (2021) by 128%.

Fundraising

As part of our fundraising initiatives, we obtained donations from friends and individuals who support our cause. We raised a total of £6,479.41. during this period for EcoSwell UK.
