Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
We made a promising start to 2021 by re-opening our EcoHouse in Peru, which had been closed due to the COVID19 pandemic, since March of 2020. We implemented measures to manage this, such as health and safety protocols which our volunteers and staff followed. This resulted in the organization incurring zero contagions within our staff and volunteer interns. Re-opening our EcoHouse also meant that projects which had come to a standstill due to the pandemic, or which progressed at a slower rate, could regain their momentum.
For the period of 2021 we found ourselves operating in a total of six localities in Peru, making progress in each of following fronts:
Reforestation and Nature Conservation

We held our “Frontiers Champions Workshops”, as part of the Royal Academy of Engineering award our Director of Ecosystem Restoration received in 2019. These comprised a series of events aimed at building local networks with a focus on restoring Peru’s heavily degraded equatorial dry forest, through the implementation of “Holistic Management” community visions. Over 100 participants joined these events which took place in Piedritas and Lobitos. More would follow in 2022.

●[ We launched a new solid waste management project in the ] community of Negreiros, called Futuro Limpio, funded by Contour Global. This project aimed to promote the importance of clean and green spaces in Ciudad Satélite, Talara. 21 families were trained on solid waste management, and were provided with buckets for organic and inorganic solid waste. A total of 82 people participated in this project.

●[ We won a project from GIZ (the German International Cooperation) ] focussed on increasing sustainable ecotourism through birdwatching in the locality of Negritos and Piedritas.

●[ As part of our volunteer internship program tree planting initiative, ] 28 trees were planted in 2021 – totalling 3,603 seedlings since we began our operations.
Renewable Energy

Stage 3 of our Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) in the Lobitos Medical Post project began and was finalized in 2021. After a successful installation of the UPS in late 2019, which ensured that vaccines and medicines would continue to be cooled in power blackouts, we finalized stage 2 of the project, which involved identifying the best Renewable Energy source to connect to the UPS system to expand its capacity to maintain the cold chamber’s temperature during blackouts from a 15-18 hours to a 48-72 hour period. Solar panels were identified as the best option and these were installed, as part of stage 3. Now the fridges operate on clean energy representing a cost saving for the medical post of Lobitos.

Our solar distiller prototype 3 initiative involved the technical design of a new pilot unit considering local and low-cost materials and the development of a communications strategy for the local adoption of the distiller. After four years of research and development on this

project, we were able to provide one to a family in Lobitos to test it in the field. Monitoring of the unit, to identify improvements, was carried throughout this period.
- Our Green Power project with ENEL kicked-off in 2021. This is an initiative that provides green power to the Justo Pastor community, located in Ica-Peru (south of the country) through the installation of a hybrid energy microgrid. This community which in its 75 years of existence has never had electricity. Workshops were conducted to identify and introduce stakeholders to the management and maintenance of the community-based power grid that will provide energy to multiple households and establishments. In total 25 individuals participated in the workshops. The project is ongoing in 2022.
Water and Sanitation

Improvements to the design of our ongoing vetiver pontoon initiative, aimed at using low cost and locally sourced materials to treat wastewater ponds, were researched and applied by students from Edinburgh University, as part of our online volunteer internship programme.

[ The project that we won from GIZ in 2021 also has a component ] focussed on the treatment of wastewater ponds with a pilot solution using vetiver grass that we began designing during this period. This project is ongoing in 2022.
Research

In March 2021, EcoSwell submitted an application to “Save The Waves” (STW). STW is an international non-profit that works in coalition with diverse organizations dedicated to protecting surf ecosystems. This application was submitted in order to help in the protection of the surf ecosystem in Lobitos, Peru.

In 2021 we monitored and evaluated EcoSwell’s Social and Impact Report which is based on measuring our impact using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a benchmark. All of the indicators presented describe the contribution of our organization to the impact indicators of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, in the region of Piura, Peru. The report can be downloaded from EcoSwell’s website.

An analysis of Lobitos Medical Centre was conducted to evaluate its preparedness during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that the Lobitos medical post does not have the proper support, equipment, infrastructure, staff, or management mechanisms to attend the health needs of its jurisdiction. The study concluded that medical post needed more government support to address the requirements of its population.
COVID 19 community support
- In partnership with ENEL and as part our volunteer internship programme, we were able to deliver 827 food parcels as donations in the localities of Lobitos and Piedritas and the city of Talara.

Volunteer Internship Programme
In 2021 our volunteering internships programme outperformed our best year to date (2019) by 154%.
Fundraising
As part of our fundraising initiatives, we obtained donations from friends and individuals who support our cause. We raised a total of £1,110 during this period for EcoSwell UK.
