Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
We made a promising start to 2020 with a number of impactful programmes underway and a good number of volunteer interns becoming part of the EcoSwell family in Lobitos. Sadly, in mid March our Volunteer Intern Programme in Lobitos came to a stop, when the COVID-19 virus hit, and Peru implemented measures to manage the spread of the virus. We took immediate steps to ensure that our Volunteer Interns and staff were safe and able to get to their home countries. Sadly, we would not see any more Volunteer Interns at the EcoSwell House until January, 2021. Despite the impact of the pandemic, our operations were able to continue, and progress was made in each of these projects:
Reforestation and Conservation

“Lobitos Verde: A sanctuary for the Peruvian Plantcutter” is an ecosystem restoration project focused on maintaining reforestation and neighbourhood greening initiatives in Lobitos, continuing environmental education workshops, communications and awareness spreading, engaging local and regional stakeholders and undertaking research on deforestation and forest degradation within Lobitos. Stage 2 of the Project progressed with funding made directly to EcoSwell Peru, from the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium (Ohio, USA) and a scientific paper was published in the Peruvian Journal of Biology UNMSM).

Proposals were developed to continue the community ecotourism initiatives in Piedritas with Enel Generación Piura (the local branch of an Italian multinational energy company).
Renewable Energy
-
Solar Distiller Project, Stage 2 was completed. This was the second pilot of a locally sourced solar distiller to be used by fishermen’s families to turn seawater into drinking water. The pilot was tested and proved to be unsuccessful. This conclusion began a phase of outreach to academics in Peruvian universities to support the development of the distiller design in conjunction with the EcoSwell renewable energy team and led to a partnership with Professor Erick Saettone from the University of Lima, who agreed to support the development of another prototype. Solar Distiller prototype 3 involved the technical design of a new pilot unit considering local and low-cost materials and the development of a communications strategy for the local adoption of the distiller.

UPS and Renewable Energy System for the Medical Post of Lobitos, Stage 2 began. After a successful installation of an Uninterruptible Power Source system in late 2019, which ensured that vaccines and medicines would continue to be cooled in power blackouts, Stage 2 involved feasibility studies to identify the best Renewable Energy source to connect to the UPS system to expand its capacity to maintain the cold chamber’s temperature during blackouts from a 15-18 hours to a 48-72 hour period. During visits to the Medical Post, a hole in the roof was identified, which was repaired by EcoSwell so that the system could continue operating unharmed.

Water and Sanitation
- Together with our partners from the Colorado School of Mines we began an initial exploration towards the development of reverse osmosis technologies to transform brackish water into fresh water for use in Ecosystem Restoration projects.
Research

During June-July 2020, we carried out research regarding the social and political factors that were affecting the spread of the COVID-19 virus on the Lobitos locality, the city of Talara and the Piura region, based on government statistics and qualitative interviews with the chiefs of the Lobitos medical post and the Talara medical centre. Research was carried out with a volunteer intern from UC Berkeley’s Blum Center for Developing Economies.

In September 2020, the Surfonomics study for Lobitos e-book was published in Brazil by the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Florianópolis. This paper valued the economic impact of the wave breaks of Lobitos on its local economy, taking the locality a step further to its recognition as a World Surfing Reserve. Research by EcoSwell and with support a Professor of Management at UFSC Florianópolis and member of the Center for Surf Research. The e-book was published in EcoSwell's website, the UFSC Florianópolis website and the Surf the Waves Coalition website for free and promoted through the social media of the three institutions.

In October 2020, EcoSwell’s first ever Impact Report was published on a graphic format on EcoSwell’s website and promoted through its social media. The document compiles impact indicators from EcoSwell’s projects in the 2013 - 2018 period. All of the indicators presented describe the contribution of our organization to the impact indicators of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, in the region of Piura, Peru.
COVID 19 community support

In partnership with ENEL Energy, we were able to deliver 1,250 food parcels on 2 occasions to 800 families in the localities of Lobitos and Piedritas and the city of Talara.

We were able to donate PPE, medical equipment and medicines totalling over PEN 3,700 to the Lobitos Medical post and the Talara medical center.
We also took the opportunity during lockdown to focus on building networks and partnerships for grant applications and funding, to ensure that EcoSwell would continue to survive and flourish into the future. A number of applications were made during the latter stages that have now come to fruition. The first of these, a grant from Royal Academy of

| funding options (PROFONANPE and UK Pact). | |
| • | Applying for funding by Geoscientists Without Borders (GWB) of |
| the Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG) in partnership with | |
| Lancaster University and the University of Piura (UDEP). | |
| • | We presented in international conferences and congresses (J- |
| DAAL Latam Meetings on Anaerobic Digestion - Uruguay, Brasil | |
| & Chile) about our preliminary designs for bioremediation | |
| solutions in wastewater treatment using the Vetiver System (VS). | |
| • | We drafted papers for future publication on Dry Sanitation |
| initiatives. | |
| • | We started building networks and relationships with the German |
| International Cooperation (GIZ), Regional Government |

| representatives, local authorities and the community of the district | |
| of La Brea-Negritos, including field visits and presented in online | |
| events, for future ecotourism, conservation of local wetlands of | |
| migratory birds and wastewater treatment projects. | |

- The benefits and impact of this sponsorship will be promoted in EcoSwell’s and Fluye Bottle’s social media platforms.
This period of change and uncertainty also led to the creation of an Online Volunteer Intern Programme, enabling us to continue our project work and to support young people looking for experience of working with an NGO. We produced over 18 online webinars during this time and as part of this online programme. During such difficult times, we’re proud that we were able to adapt our ways of working to continue to move forward with our strategy, and support our local communities, the local ecosystem and our Volunteer Interns.
Looking forward to 2021, we have already started to welcome Volunteer Interns back to Peru and Lobitos, and we have moved swiftly to progress a number of our projects that were stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re looking forward to continuing to implement our strategy to support the local communities in Lobitos.
As part of our fundraising initiatives, we obtained donations from friends and individuals who support our cause. We raised a total of £580 during this period for EcoSwell UK.
Our presence in volunteer platforms grew, but due to global pandemic, our number of volunteers fell in 2020 to 24, in comparison to 2019 (39). In 2021 we have already exceeded our record number of volunteers (47 so far).
