Health Projects
SGP provides funding for the Nkuringo Green Hill Health Centre (NGHH). The facility has been registered as a Type II facility (Ugandan health clinic classification) is to be able to provide health services, in line with guidelines set out by the Uganda Ministry of Health, delivered by the community.
During 2021, the funding of the completion of the construction of the maternity and pediatric wards on the NGHH site accounted for £16,412 from an actual spend of £32,997 accounting for 50% of the costs. The remaining costs were applied to payroll and drugs.
Increased funding is budgeted for staff costs (43% of the total budget) in 2022 as the facility recruit more medical personnel to service the Type III facility. This funding will take into account the intentions within the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the parties associated with NGHH.
Type III services will start in 2022. It is the intent of SGP that by so doing, the Ministry of Health and agencies of the Catholic Church will be able to join SGP in co-funding the facility in line with the MOU. The MOU states that SGP will fund up to 100% of costs of NGHH during the first 5 years of operation. Thereafter, SGP will fund 60% of costs in years 6 and 7. In years 8, 9 and 10, funding will be reduced to 30% of costs. The MOU was signed on the 25[th] February 2016. 2022 will mark year 7.
SGP intends to adhere to the co-funding model and in time hand-over the NGHH to the ultimate beneficiary, where SGP no longer provides funding. This means that SGP will be funding to a maximum of 60% of costs in 2022.

Education Projects
Supporting educational initiatives is a cornerstone of the SGP activity. Ensuring children stay at school for longer and achieve better results will improve the welfare of communities and enrich the lives of individuals. It is of paramount importance that children stay in education for as long as possible to provide themselves with the best opportunities and choices in their lives.
This can take the form of supporting a child at one of the private schools or providing more general funding and support for children, teaching staff and building school infrastructure in government and community schools specifically. Funding of activities at the government and community schools is done on a project-by-project basis as well as providing funders the opportunity to support a child at a government school.
SGP has a policy of supporting government and community schools as a priority as private schools can receive funds from non SGP sources and children who go to private schools can clearly afford to do so.
From 2022 SGP will stop taking on new children to support in private schools. Children already supported by SGP will continue to enjoy funding of their education.
SGP will create a scholarship programme in 2022 which will be offered to all schools currently supported by SGP. The scholarship will be awarded to children who attain grade passes above a defined level and who show a willingness and capability. SGP anticipates that there will be a slight drop in the number of children returning to school, the scholarship programme will be partially funded by the fees that are saved.
SGP additionally funds school lunches (25% of costs and salary of cook at the Ntungamo Primary School in Nkuringo). This initiative is considered unsustainable and will be phased out over time.
Infrastructure & bio toilets
During 2020 and 2021, the funding of infrastructure and construction projects in schools across the Kisoro District was a key feature. Infrastructure support for schools ranged from provision of iron sheets for roofing to bio toilet and classroom construction. With £27,402 spent overall, £11,300 was spent on infrastructure projects accounting for 41% of the overall spend. The remaining costs were spent on school fees, textbooks and teaching costs.
Teachers
SGP funds the salaries of three teachers in schools at Rutooma, St. Christophers (Ntungamo Primary School), Murole.

Lightening Arrestors
SGP have provided lightning arrestors at schools in Akengeyo, Murole, Nombe, Rubuguri Primary and St. Josephs Rubuguri. SGP will continue to provide lightning arrestors when requested to do.
Textbooks
SGP has provided textbooks at schools in Suma, Ntungamo and Rutooma as well as construction of a library in Iryavumba High School Rubuguri. The Volcano House in Nkuringo, the SGP residence and HQ, also has provided library facilities for supervised library sessions and tutoring.
School fees
SGP have provided school fees for 62 children. 2022 will see a further increase in funding of 30% covering increased infrastructure support. It is the SGP strategy to reduce the total amount invested in school fess in future years, to ensure that more funding is directed to infrastructure projects to provide the widest appeal and value to the communities served.

The Empower Her project has a dedicated classroom in Rubuguri equipped with manual sewing machines. To provide the tuition, teachers are contracted to provide classes in basket weaving, bead work, dress making and sewing skills.
The Empower Her project also provides seminars and tutorials, presented by successful women as role models. This initiative is provided to illustrate options and life choices available to break the cycle of under achievement and early pregnancy.
This initiative is fully funded by SGP, with materials, tuition costs and buildings costs. Products that are made by the group, that are taken for sale overseas are accounted for and the Empower Her members are compensated for the sale of products.

Community projects
Key Features
-
Over 76 water tanks installed
-
10 solar panel systems installed
-
Wide distribution of installations
-
Managed by Evarist Muhumuza
Community projects are delivered through supporting water capture, cleansing and retention systems. Water projects are based around the delivery of three types of initiatives:
-
Water tank installation, (3,000 litre and 5,000 litre)
-
Water pipe research and installation (use of hydraulic ram technology) 3. Water filter installation
Children collect the water for household needs. A trip to the water sources in the valleys and spring sources in the hills twice a day, has now been replaced with well-located water tanks. Children now spend more time at school. Standards are improving in educational results providing better choices in the lives of the community.
Since 2014, over 70 water tanks and water filters have been installed over an extensive area. Water tanks and water filters have been installed across the Nteko Ridge, from Nkuringo to Kabaya, Suma, Chicomo and Rugandu villages as well as in Rubuguri, Kisoro, Lake Mutanda areas and in the Wakiso district.
This has been a popular and transformational project for both locals and sponsors, since these installations provide a great opportunity for the community and sponsors to work together to install the tanks.
Management
The Community projects are run by Evarist Muhumuza. The project manager decides upon the location of the water tanks (this is based on among other things; number of people in an area, presence of the elderly, children and the need) and the community then gets involved in installing the tanks. The tanks are transported by truck and on foot to the location. Concrete is mixed, bricks are laid, the tanks are placed and to finish off, the gutters are positioned to direct the water flow from the roofs of buildings.
