## **ANNUAL REPORT & ACCOUNTS 2025** ## **CONTENTS** - 1 – About RYST - 2 – Financial review - 3 – Structure, Governance & Management - 4 – Highlights - 5 – Accounts for the period 1 January to 31 December 2025 ## **1 - ABOUT RYST** ## MISSION Roseland Youth Sailing Trust (RYST) is making it possible for a new generation of children and young people in Cornwall to experience the joy of sailing, building confidence and skills that will benefit them throughout their lives, especially in disadvantaged communities where they would otherwise not have the opportunity. A charitable trust founded in 2015, RYST is registered at the Charity Commission for England and Wales, charity number 1164283, principal address Polvean, Freshwater Lane, St. Mawes, Truro, Cornwall TR2 5AR. ## OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES To advance amateur sport, in particular sailing and other water sports, for young people who are residents, or those who attend school, or work, or are a member of a sailing club on the Roseland and also in neighbouring areas, by the provision of financial awards to enable and encourage participation in sailing, windsurfing or other water sports. We confirm the Trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. Our operations are threefold: Schools Programme: The main activity of the Trust is to fundraise for and organise, through local sailing schools, the delivery of weekly school sailing lessons during term time for predominantly primary schools in the Roseland and Clay Country and neighbouring areas. Offshore Sailing: In addition, through canvassing sponsorship from mainly local organisations and individuals, we charter a sail training ship for 10 or so days in the summer to provide sixteen-to seventeen-year-olds living in Cornwall the opportunity of a life-changing experience at sea. Grants for Individuals: We also respond to requests from individuals for funding to support their sailing ambitions. ## FUNDING The Trust is sustained solely through donations from individuals, fundraising events and supportive organisations. Trustees and volunteers give their time free, so all the funds we raise go to getting young people on the water. ## POLICY ON GRANT-MAKING In our Schools Programme we make grants to our selected schools to pay for sailing lessons with local providers. This is the most cost effective and inclusive way of enabling young people to learn to sail. We select schools in the local area on the basis of indicators of multiple deprivation. For the Offshore Sailing programme, individuals are selected following wide advertising, especially in the schools with which we work, in a two-stage application process. With Grants for Individuals, young people are often referred to us by the sailing schools. We consider the economic background of the family, the commitment to sailing and the amount requested. ## ACHIEVEMENTS Schools Programme: Since the Trust’s inception in 2015, our Schools Programme has introduced 3062 young sailors from 21 schools to the water. Some of these schools are located in Cornwall’s poorest areas, where many children have never even been to the beach let alone dreamed of going sailing. We know from the feedback from teachers and parents that, along with sailing skills, the children gain confidence from trying a new activity outside their comfort zone and learn self-reliance and teamwork from their sailing. For some it becomes a passion for life, and they continue sailing and helming racing boats in local regattas. A few having become dinghy instructors or work as professional sailors on boats. We are changing their horizons. Offshore Sailing: The Offshore Sailing programme has run for five years, during which the Trust has sent 58 young adults on this valuable life experience. A number of them have progressed to maritime careers: for example, joining the Royal Navy, becoming RYA sailing instructors and being selected for the Crew4Gold Olympic training programme. Those who have been on the Offshore Sailing trips tell us the experience is life-changing. A young woman on the 2021 voyage described it as ‘the best 10 days of my life’. Apart from the sailing and adventure, the shared experience gives them a close group of friends whose support continues after the trip. The individuals benefit in that they can take their sailing further than they otherwise could given their financial resources. We are able to sustain the passion. For all, it gives a new experience that develops confidence and water awareness which is of great benefit throughout their lives. Grants for Individuals: Our Grants for Individuals programme has so far helped 25 young professionals gain qualifications and work experience. ## VOLUNTEERS In addition to the Trustees, we have volunteers who support on the fundraising and attend our meetings on a regular basis. Other local people assist us in various fund-raising activities. ## **2 - FINANCIAL REVIEW 2025** ## INCOME AND EXPENDITURE We ended the year with a surplus of £56,316 (£50,986 in 2024). This was transferred to the new CIO in December – see Highlights below. We received £24,821 in regular and other donations from individual supporters (£17,494 in 2024), together with £36,225 from charitable trusts, companies and other organisations (£9,902 in 2024). We plan a repeat of our fund-raising activities, which also raise awareness of our work. These brought in a further £6,584 (£5,815 in 2024). In our Schools Programme we made grants to schools for sailing lessons of £36,100 (£49,959 in 2024). The Offshore Sailing programme seeks sponsors for places aboard and many of these have become returning annual supporters. The young people themselves are encouraged to raise funds to support one or more young person/s the subsequent year. This year, they raised £1,919 (£2,540 in 2024). Our Grants to Individuals totalled £2,346 (£1,283 in 2024), with a further £7,500 going to supporting a 30-day sailing expedition by pupils at Brannel School gathering environmental data in British waters. Of this, £5,000 consisted of a grant we secured from the Duke of Cornwall’s Marine Environment Fund, and a further £2,500 from our own funds. ## RESERVES We aim to hold reserves of about £50k to cover the first six months of our Schools Programme in the following year to enable us to make continuing commitment to the existing schools on the programme. Any excess carried forward allows us to consider introducing new schools into the programme. The trustees have reviewed the overall financial position and consider the trust to be a going concern. ## **3 - STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE & MANAGEMENT** The Trust is governed by a Trust Deed dated 19th October 2015, with amendment by resolution on 6th May 2024. It is constituted as an unincorporated trust registered as a charity. A minimum of five trustees is required: two may be appointed by St Mawes Sailing Club, and one each from three local primary schools (St Mawes, Gerrans and Tregony). They are to be representative of communities across the Roseland. ## TRUSTEES IN 2025 This year marked the passing of trustee Edward Billington, whose contribution will be sadly missed. His place on the board of trustees was taken by former volunteer Miranda Grubb. Mark Osborn took over the role of Chairman from acting chairman Jonathan Adlington who remains a trustee. Trustees in 2025 were as follows: - Mark Osborn, Chairman - Loveday Shewell, Treasurer - Jonathan Adlington - John Parr - Francis Hallawell ## **4 - HIGHLIGHTS** 2025 marked our 10[th] anniversary, celebrated with a presentation and drinks party for our supporters hosted by Hotel Tresanton. As part of our celebrations, we held a highly successful fund-raising Paella Night at the Hidden Hut, Porthcurnick, which raised £3,000. To support our growth in the next 10 years we began operating as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), charity number 1211154. CIO status confers limited liability in recognition of the robust governance we have in place, making it easier to attract new trustees. The CIO had been registered with the Charities Commission on 24 November 2024 to take over the operations of RYST charity number 1164283. A new bank account was opened at Barclays Bank in July 2025. At the end of December 2024, the balance of funds was transferred from the old Trust account to the new one. The subject of this Annual Report & Accounts, charity registration number 1164283, will close during 2026. With effect from 1 January 2026, Roseland Youth Sailing Trust is operating as a CIO, registration number 1211154.
