ANNUAL REPORT 2021
This is the end of the seventh year and our objectives remain the same: to encourage young people on the Roseland and beyond to participate in water sports. The most cost effective and inclusive way continues to be through our schools sailing programme. This year we expanded again to include more schools and reached the hallmark of over 1,000 young sailors being introduced to sailing through this term time programme since our inception.
For the first time we decided to expand our offer for 16-18 year olds with the opportunity to race on the Tall Ships from Falmouth. Unfortunately due to Covid the race was cancelled, but nonetheless we sent 11 youngsters on a 10 day voyage on TS Maybe which were described by one participant as ‘ the best 10 days of my life’. This exercise was useful in giving life skills even to those who didn’t get a place – we asked them to complete questionnaires, think about fund raising and also to produce a video about themselves. All these are transferable skills for getting a job or a place at college or university.
Those that went produced excellent documentation about what they had learned , which was great feedback for their individual sponsors.
This year we supplemented the regular standing orders with grant applications, including our first to an American organisation which was successful. We were able to take advantage of monies which were available for helping young people bounce back from Covid. Getting out on the water and having fun with friends again was a tonic after lockdown.
Looking ahead, we have healthy reserves and an exciting fund raising programme for 2022.
