THE ANNUAL ACCOUNTS AND REPORT OF THE SOMERSET COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS TRUST: CHARITY NO. 11642381

INTRODUCTION - The Trust continues to be ready to serve the communities within Somerset and surrounding Counties with a voluntary service to assist anyone in need and to aid the civil authorities in the event of any emergency. The Trust is a recognised body known as the Somerset Community Volunteers (SCV) to be called on by the civil authorities if an emergency is such that voluntary organisations are called to assist.

THE ACCOUNT – We now manage with a single bank account and calculate Charity Holdings for both income and expenditure.

The Charity account covers those monies raised for charitable purposes. Such monies are ring- fenced to be used only to assist individuals or communities who are most in need of help, whether by a donation from the Trust or by expenditure incurred (with an audit trail) while our volunteers are ready to render actual assistance.

The Club and the EVAG areas of the account were Closed when we left both Rotary and the EVAG.

TRUSTEE’S - Our 5 trustees have only met on 8 separate occasions over the past twelve months, 7 of those have been via Zoom meetings, and these have all but replaced our face-to-face meetings, which are necessary for essential decisions when meeting in person is considered necessary. The Trustees have tried to maintain membership with little success. Our Club membership has dwindled to just that of our main trustees. However, should there be a serious incident, we are sure that the SCV Membership would once again grow and the need for voluntary assistance escalates. The Trustees took the decision to closed as a Rotary club with effect from 1[st] July 23. Since them the SCV has continued without the comfort blanket of the Rotary Insurance. This is not seen as an issue at present as we have been going through a period of good weather which has meant that there has been little for us to do over this period. I am sure that should the need arise, we would be able to recruit folk who would like to help those in most urgent need.

LOGISTICS – In January of 2023, we were given notice to remove our remaining flood stores from a secure store in the Bridgewater area of Somerset. This caused a serious issue as we had ownership of stores within the store, we did not see a logic to spend hard earned charity money on providing storage facilities on this project. So, after some discussion, the trustees agreed to hand over all of our flood related stores to the Rotary Emergency Volunteer Action Group (EVAG) who had the power and the money to maintain the annual cost of the storage of stores. We only took with us the stores that EVAG did not have a use for, those stores that the Somerset County Council would not allow us to issue or were nearing the end of their useful of shelf life. Until that point is reached, these stores must be maintained in a good and serviceable condition. Any Items that are nearing the end of their shelf life or are showing signs of deterioration are “conditioned” by our trustees; these conditioned stores are removed and where possible are sold or disposed of. Moneys raised from these sales go toward the Good and Benefit of our Charity Account.

AID TO THE CIVIL COMMUNITY - Our SCV Trust members who were originally Spontaneous Volunteers, have provided aid to the Civil Community, for many years. Throughout the Co-vid 19 Pandemic, we have provided our members to act as Car Park Marshalls and Guides at the new Vaccination Centres as they opened. This has been seen as a worthwhile task for our club to perform and has been enjoyed by many – by doing their bit for our local community.

GRANTS FROM THE CHARITABLE TRUST - Our Club has made 6 grants in this reporting period to those most in need. Our Trustees have have agreed to present six donations in this reporting these were to:

BARB Burnham Rescue Hovercraft Station £750.00. CLIC Sargent Centre Care for Children with Cancer £750.00. The Bridgwater Food Bank £750. The RBL Taunton Branch £750.00 The Salvation Army £350.00.

We provided a total of £3350.00 to good causes in this reporting period.

SUMMARY – Our 5 Trustees are continuing to keep the wheels of the Club turning, since the outbreak of the Co-Vid 19 pandemic we have had continued issues with membership, but no matter, we continue to raise funds for the good and benefit of the charities we support each year. This has been another very good year for our Charity. Our Trustees have met regularly and since leaving the Rotary we have not missed the Rotary membership, we really do enjoy managing our own club; without the rules, unnecessary costs of annual Rotary membership Fees, which became, just too much for many of our original members; so, they decided to leave rather than continue with the payment of Rotary annual fees. Over the past 9 years we have formed strong bonds and friendships within our group. During this reporting period we have changed our name with the Charity Commission and removed the “Rotary” from our name, so we continue as “The Somerset Community Volunteers Trust”. We have continued to meet regularly and make all financial decisions for the good and benefit for the Trust and the Club. We have enjoyed our regular social activities together which is such a good things about our friendship. Behind all of our endeavours we have maintained our ability to react to any local emergency that we are asked to aid and support, wherever it is needed.
