The Trustees present their report together with the financial statements of Sunningwell Pre-School for the year ended 31[st] March 2025.
Reference and Administrative Details
The charity is registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with the Charity Commission, number 1164257. It operates under the name Sunningwell PreSchool.

The Aims of the Charity
We have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aim and objectives and in planning our future activities. The Pre-school aims to:

Stimulate the development of local children aged 2 to 4 through play and early education

Help these children to gain social skills

Create a sense of belonging to the local community

Excite interest in and respect for nature and the environment through our

weekly forest school sessions
Summary of the Main Achievements of the Charity During the Year
The pre-school’s purpose is to nurture happy, confident, independent learners who are excited to discover the world around them. The pre-school continues to receive excellent feedback from parents and each year, we are proud to send our leaving class off to primary school knowing that they are well prepared. Our forest school sessions remain very popular and well-enjoyed by the children and we have benefited significantly in past years from MOD grants to improve this space. We work closely with our neighbouring primary school to collaborate on relevant topics. We engage our parents informally at pick-up and drop-off, we ask for feedback when we issue the children’s annual reports, and we invite parents to join the AGM to express their views.
The Preschool was inspected by Ofsted in October 2023. We are delighted to report that we achieved a “Good” rating across all areas. We are exceptionally proud of our staff for this achievement, showcasing their dedication to providing a happy, nurturing, educational and safe environment for the children in our care.
Other key achievements of the year have been:
Increased pupil numbers, providing an invaluable resource for local parents
While some local preschools have unfortunately had to close, and more broadly across the UK there are concerns about the availability of nursery places to match increased availability of funded childcare, Sunningwell pre-school has been thriving and is highly valued by local parents. We have added one additional member of staff which has enabled us to offer more places to meet this additional demand.
Stable financial health of the pre-school, enabling further investment
After several difficult financial years post-Covid, the pre-school has made a modest surplus of £28,164 this year. This includes circa £3,296 raised through fund-raising. The Preschool staff, Committee and parents have actively supported fund-raising activities this year. As ever the highlight is the Christmas Fair and Santa’s grotto, visited by circa 50 children. We are pleased to offer a more affordable Santa visit than

many local commercial enterprises. Numerous other fundraising activities also took place and were well supported by the local community and parents.
Our priorities for any surplus are 1) to invest in the learning environment and physical assets at the pre-school; 2) support our staff through learning and development opportunities and appropriate pay; 3) maintain a healthy reserve.
We were again able to increase wages at above-inflation levels for the next financial year, recognising the hard work of our staff and ongoing impacts of the cost-of-living crisis.
Improvement of the physical environment of the pre-school
Key investments this year have been significantly upgrading the front garden with more flower beds, improved flooring to natural bark and shingle, and additional outdoor play activities. Indoors, we have invested in new tables and chairs to replaced previous old and tired equipment. We have further plans to rejuvenate the outdoor space in the next financial year, pending agreement from local stakeholders.
Staff development
Staff development and opportunities for ongoing learning is important to the Preschool. Our Nursery Manager has completed her Level 3 SENCO training. Another our Deputy Manager has completed her Forest School training which has allowed us to offer additional forest school provision to our pupils. 3 staff members have completed autism training.
Policy on Reserves
The Trustees aim to hold a reserve of £50,000 to cover staffing costs during the summer holidays and to meet unexpected expenditure. The funds currently held are significantly higher than this in anticipation of future investment in outdoor facilities.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Sunningwell Pre-School
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Sunningwell Pre-School for the year ended 31[st] March 2025 which are set out on pages 5 to 7.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 or the Act; or

The accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
