ACTION KIDNEY CANCER began its work as a voluntary support organisation in 2006. ItW8S
registered as a formal charitable incorporated organisation ICIOI on the 3 November 2015 and the
charity is managed according to its governing documents dated 3 November 2015.
The charity underwent a complete rebranding during in 2021 and is now known by its working name
ACTION KIDNEYCANCER.
Where there is a raquiiement fol new Trustetss, they will be identified and appointed by the current
Trustees. The ACTION KIDNEY CANCER management team is responsible forthe induction ofany
newTrustees, and this will involve a briefing about Trustee responsibilities, the governing document.
and the adopted operating policies and procedures of the charity. All Trustees provide their services
to the charity on a voluntary unpaid basis.
The Trustees delegate day-to-day responsibility for the running of the charity to the management
team who are accouniable to ttte Trustees and report to the Trustees throughout the year as required
and at regular Trustee meetings.

The Trustees have a duty to identify and review all risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure
appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against Iraud and error. The
Trustees regularly review the risks that the charity may face. and the Trustees will continue to monitor
the risks associated with its activities and continue to be vigilant as to other risks that might be
associated with a charity providing support services to people affected by kidney cancer.
The Trustees have agreed and adopt8d a series of operating policies to ensure the charity runs
smoothly and complies with all charity commission requirements and legal responsibiliti89. The
operating policies are reviewed every two years and are available by written reques1 to the ACTION
KIDNEY CANCER management team. Some policies are available via theACTION KIDNEY CANCER
website.
The Trustees declare as part of this annual return, that there are no serious incidents 01 other matters
theTrustees should have reported tothe Charity Commission.
Ch•rity objectives and activities
To promote and protect th8 physical and mental health of patients with kidney cancer in the United
Kingdom by:
1. The provision of information, support. education and practical advice to kidney cancer patients,
their families, and their c8rers
2. To advance the education and awareness of all Inatters relating to kidney cancer with the general
public
3. Promoti r¢g and supporting research projects into the causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and
cuie of kidney cancer and disseminating the results of such research.
The Truste8s meet a minimum ot once a year, to discuss, agree and record charitable activities.

held throughout the year as required andlor as requested by the Trustees or management team.

The Trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance provided by the charity commission's
general guidance and advice on public benefit. In planning all activities including financial policies.
the trustees confirm they have complied with the duty in section 17151 ol the 2011 Charities Act and
the Trustees ar8 satisfied that all charitable activities during the year are for the benefit of the public.
Achievement5 and performance
ACTION KIDNEY CANCER is a patient and carey led kidney cancer charity with a ur)ique perspective
and understanding of the needs of kidney cancer patients, carers. and theiT f8milies. ACTION KIDNEY
CANCER provides information. support, and advocacyto anyone affected by kidney cancer and
seeks to educate and inform the public in all aspects of kidney cancer.
The year ending 31 October 2023 was a very busy and productive time for the charity. The aftermath
of the COVID 19 pandemic is still having a significant impact on the ability of ihe NHS to meet car)cer
waiting time standards 2nd this is having a sevefe impact on our patient community. Our
m8nagem8Wlt t8am continue to work hard together. reaching out and supporting kidney c8nc8r
patients and carers. The charity provides information about treatment optiofis, updates. and advice
for patients about NHS waiting lists and delays, and how to access treatment options and care
Services. The support cases can be complex, they are time-consuming and require a peTsonalised
approach, but we know that Tecently diagnosed patients are particularly vulnerable and trying to

negoti8te their way around the complexities of the NHS system. adds signrficantly to their worries
and fears.
We are told ih3t the pandemic is still affecting the ability of the NHS to meet the demand for its
services. Patients and their families bear the brunt of the delays and patients report long wait times
for diagnosis and lengthy waits for surgery. There are delays for routine scans and the wait times for
test results have lengthened up to and sometimes beyond, 6 weeks. Because of this, kidney cancer
patients and their families turn to the charity for support and practical advice about how to navigate
the complexities of the NHS system in order to get timely appointments, scan results and 2nd
opinions.
We are reliant on and thankful for the work of the ACTION KIDNEY CANCER managem8nttearn who
have worked long hoLJrs throughout the year to support each othei in addition to providing bespoke
support and advice to individual pat18nts and family members within our or71ine community forum.

In addition, we provide regular daily kidney cancer news, research. updates via our website and
social media channels and we continue to provide practical information about the COVID 19
vaccination programm8 on our websit8 for the public and patients.

"Website. Our new website is updated daily with kidney cancer news, research, and campaigning
updates. We continue to add and review content on a planned basis including a formal review of all
patient information, clinical information, and policy documents. We are prep8ring to apply for the
Health Information Policy for PIF Tick accreditation to increase the credibility of our patient
resources.
* Projects 2022123 In addition to our normal activities, we aim to produce several patient focused
projects each year.
The Renal Oncology Nurse Network is one such project.. following a talk and presentation at a nursing
conference by management team member Karen McNee, we were approached to explore the
feasibility of creating a renal cancer oncology nurse network with the aim of sharing best practices.
providing u p-to-date news and research, and to work in partnership with the nurses to create a
depository of renal cancer information and resources. The aim is to provide admin support for kidney
cancer oncology nurses in their work with kidney cancer patients. We now have over 50 kidney
cancer nurses in our Renal Oncology Nurse Network IRONN'SI, and many have received our literature
for their clinics. We held a successtul inaugural online meeting on the18th October 2023 and have
plans for a rolling programme of events over the coming ye8rs.
We continued to add to our library of video interviews with expert clinicians and healthcare
professionals designed to answer qLJestioTrs raised from within the community. The expert videos
involve the charity management team interviewing clinicians and nurses with experience and
knowledge of treatments and caiing for patients with kidney cancer.
We were approached by Glasgow University to assist with writing 2 modules150% of the course) for
the RCC4Nurses online training course. This course has been well Teceived and our medical writer
Sharon D8Vgson Kèll is mentioned a# a collaborative author of this work.
As part ofour international work, ACTION KIDNEYCANCER project managed and authored a
comprehensive Decision Aid for patients considering participating in a clinical t1181. The booklet.
called "My Treatment, My Choice- A decision aid to help people decide whether to take part in a
clinical trial for kidney cancer" was published by IKCC Iwww.ikcc.orgi in April 2023 and Is freely

available to patients and HCPS around the world for anyone wanting to understand more about
patient participation in kidney cancer clinicaltrials.
Patient Involvement. We have been very proactive with our canceradvocacyorganisation
partners, such as Cancer 52, Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Relief, Coalition for Reducing
Bureaucracy in Clinical Trials, Independent Cancer Patient Voice IICPVI, and the ABPI Patient
Organisation Forum. Advocacy on behalf of the kidney cancer community is a vital part of our work
and ACTION KIDNEY CANCER is recognised nationally and internationally as a genuine patient-led
charity pioviding a strong patient focussed voice. We continue to campaign publicly for meaningful
patient involvement in all aspects of patient treatment and care, research, and survivorship.
Clinical trialg. We continue to work with the scientific community and research establishments
across the country to help impiuve geographical spiead. recruitment, and retention of kidney cancer
patienls into clinical trials around the UK. We are frequently involved in clinical trial design and data
management committees. we are called on to review andlor help write clinic81 trial Patient
Information Sheets and clinical trial protocols. and review patient videos for clinical trials. As patient
experts and representatives, we work in partnership with leading renal cancer clinicians, nLJrses, and
members of the scientific community towards better care and treatment options and ultimately a
cure for kidney cancer.
We have continued to invest time and f unds in our unique kidney cancer clinical trials database on
our website. The clinical trials database is a fullyfunctional searchable database written in patient-
friendly language and complemented with a full glossary and a range of patiernt educational
resources about clinical trials, both written and video format. We provide support and work with
individual kidney cancer patients to h81p find suitable clinical trials which patients can then print off
and discuss with their hospital team.
Over the year, we were able to play a leading role in several campaigns and took the opportunity to
provide a strong patient voice into several r¢ationally important pieces of work.. including RAMPART,
REFINE, TRACERX, OPTIC and EqUATOR clinical trial groups.
We belong to the Coalition for Reducing Bureaucracy in Clinical Trials where we have a role as lead
for the'informed consent" working group.
"Patient support. We provide the only'peer to peer" managed kidneycancer helpline in the UK. We
provide a f riendly yet knowledgeable point of contact for patients and caTers to discus5 their
concerns in an Dpen, impartial, and non-judgemental way. Our aim is to provide patients with an
individual and personal service, providing quality evidence-based information and personal
advocacy.
Our private'peer to peer" online discussion forum has an 8Ctive membership of over 1400 kidney
cancer patients, carers. and family members. Our support forum is available 2417 and is a unique
support service Tnanaged and moderated by expert Patients. caregivers. and advocates. This is a
busy yet welcoming online forum that offers evidence-based information. shared patient experiences
and general patient and carer support. Our discussion forum regularly records over 7000 comments
& inteiactions every month covering all aspects of living with kidney cancer such as sharing
emotional and practical issues. including side effecls management. diet and well-being, family
relationships. financial and work issues, survivorship, and bereavement and loss.
*Campaigning. ACTION KIDNEY CANCER participated in the very successful International World
Kidney Cancer Day in 2023. We led the UK campaign around a theme of'we need to talk about living
with kidney cancer"providing expert patient vide05 and iaking part in the global symposium.

The charity was part of the policy team that led the Big Cancer52 Conversation. Action Kidney Cancer
took the lead role for the'access to clinical trials" working group.
*Cornmunication. We continue to produce our valLt2ble professionallywritten quarterly ACTION
KIDNEY CANCER newsletter updating our communityof patient. carers. and healthcare
professionals with the latest kidney cancer research and reviews, interviews. and patient activities.
We have written & distributed patient-fiiendly highlights from the main oncology conferences in
Europe IESMO and the EAUI and North America IASCO and ASCO GUI and the IKCC Global Kidney
Cancer Summit report. Keeping the patiènt community up to date with current research is an
important area ofourwork.
* Partnership working. We h8ve continued to provide an expert kidney cancer patient perspective at
v2riotJs online meetings. webinars and virtual and face-to-face conferences organised by the
National Health Service INHSI, Internation81 Kidney Cancer Coalition IIKCCI, pharmaceutical
companies, National Institute for Health and Caie Excellence INICEI and the Scott15h Medicines
Consortium ISMCI and the National Kidney CancerAudit.
Action Kidney Cancer are members of the following organisationg.. Welsh Cancer Alliance, Scottish
Cancer Coalition and Scottish Cross Party Gioup for cancer, Northern Ireland Cancer Coalition. We
attend face-to-face and online meetings to ensure the kidney cancer patient perspectivo is heard.
We collaborate with Cancer52, One Cancer Voice and All.Can on policy issues such as tackling
inequalities, improving the cancer journey, reducing ingfficiencies in the healthcare system. the
Major Conditions Strategyi and early diagnosis and prevention of cancer together with raising
awareness ofAMR and the anti-smoking lobby.
We work in partnership with the ABPI and took part in their conference on real world data. We attend
regular meetings as a member of the ABPI patient involvement committee to ensure the patient voice
is always heard in discussions with our pharmaceutical industry partners.
*Fundraising. Duringthe year. managementteam member Karen McNee oversaw several successful
fundraising events including a parachute jump in Wales. a musical evening, and our very successful
yearly event organised by management team member Steve Pointon and his family* the Northern Soul
two-day dance event. We continue to promote the virtual Lands, End to John O'Groats project. the
Mad Hatters Tea Party and our"Cift a Heart'campaign continuesto be successful. Oui c8sh
ollections remain strong despite a diff icult economic climate. We also work in partnership with
Project Flutter providing Butterfly Bags and comfort cushions to kidney cancer patients around the
country.
NICE and SMC Health TechnologyAppraisals and Consultations We have continued ourclear
mission to provide evidence based, w811 researched, patient submissions to health technology
appraisals IHTAI related to kidney cancer drugs and the care of kidney cancer patients. We have
provided exp8rt patient statements at HTA committee meetings of NICE.
We attended the NICE committee meetings forthe following appraisals and recommended expert

We are stakeholders and consultees for the NICE Kidney Cancer Guidelines and Rose Woodward 18 a
lay member on the NICE Kidney Cancer Guidelines Committee.
Flnanclal tevlew
Along with many other charities, the economic recession has affected our fundraising activities.
People within the patier)t community have been hit especially hard by inflation coming 80 quickly
after the problems caused by the pandemic. Once again, we been able c2Pltalise on our excellent
reputation for meaningful patient involvement and medicalwriting which, together with grants and
donations have provided the income which allows us to provide our wide Tange of patient support
services and to look at ways of increasing the support we make avaitable to patients.
Ouring the financial year ending 31 st October 2023, ACTION KIDNEY CANCER achieved an income of
£134,698 which considering the current financial climate was a good result. Our rnaTragement
accountant works closelywith our charity accountants Messrs. Stockdale Account8nts with
oversight frorn the Trustees. As part of good governance, the Action Kidney Cancer Trustees have
recommend8d an amount of not less than 12 months core costs, be allocated to charity reserves to
ensure the future sustainability of the charity is secured. Financial prudence dictates that we place
these reserves in a separate bank account.
In 2023 w8 were able to access industry grants which have enabled us to achieve the charity aims
and objectives. as the charity's reputation grows, we have supported more patients and families than
ever before and received an increased number of helpline calls for support. Alongside vital policy
work, the charity has maintained its focus on practical patient support, providing patients and
families with up-to-date, evidence-based information and we continue to raise awareness and
increase Ljnderstanding about kidney cancer at a local. national, and international level whenever the
opportunity arises.
The Trustees and the management team would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation
to all the volunteers and supporters who have helped us to maintain much needed services to the
community in such challenging times. Without the wonderful support from our community and
volunteers, wewoLJld not be ableto do what we do.

The charity is Conside￿4 to pass the tests set out in Paragraph 1 Schedule 6 of the Finance Act 2010
and therefore it meets the definition of a charitable company for UK corporation tsx purposes.

received wlhin categories cOVe￿d by Chapter 3 Part 11 of the Corporation Tax ACL 2010 or Section
