the charity as set out in its

education of the public in the history of all
the railways that have operated in the North
East of England, particularly the North
Eastern Railway, its constituents, and
successors. The charity will achieve this
object by: collecting and preserving historical
records, regularly publishing a Journal,
arranging a programme of
meetings/exhibitions, encouraging the
construction of accurate models of the
railways, encouraging the writing of
appropriate books and their publication, and
working with public and private bodies such
as Community Rail Partnerships and Train
Operating Companies, Network Rail,
Heritage Railway Associations and
Associations representing railway staff.

1.19		 Darlington Archives TeamDuring the
year 98 queries have been received and
dealt with by the Archives Department based
at McNay Street in Darlington and 50
through the webpage via the General
Secretary, thus making a total of 148.
Good progress has been made in ensuring
the NERA archives are stored in archive-
quality storage boxes, which should greatly
improve the preservation of often unique
material. One area that has been tackled is
scanning of images in the archive, such that
they can be loaded onto the Digital Archive
available to all members. A team of three
volunteer members, all remote from the
archive premises in Darlington, stepped-up
to do this and so far over 4,500 negatives
have been scanned and uploaded. Enabling
members access to these images across the
Internet should help improve accuracy of
models and articles.

Other An Archives Working Group has been set up
to plan a strategy for the future of the NERA
archives. The Archives Team based at
Darlington are all hard-working volunteers
who give many hours of their free time to
undertake this work.

Zoom Presentations
There were 8 occasions where 12
presentations were arranged via Zoom
Video technology. The presentations allowed
a worldwide audience to participate directly
from the comfort of their own homes.
An Interpretation Boardwas unveiled at
the site of the former Fallodon private
railway station in Northumberland to
illustrate the close links between the local
railways and Sir Edward Grey (1862-1933),
Foreign Secretary and Director of the North
Eastern Railway, who lived at nearby
Fallodon Hall.

The programme of Railway Walks continued with a walk from Gateshead Metro Centre to Scotswood and Dunston Staithes. It was well attended by members and their guests. There are now two presentation meetings per annum at York (one of which includes the Annual General Meeting) and two at Hull; both are attracting more members and guests.

On the accounts for the period 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2023

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,

To follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and

To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement

In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

The accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

The accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

The accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached
