To establish and maintain a digital archive relating to the development of the information technology, software & communications industries in the UK and by British people abroad for the particular benefit of Historians, Sociologists, Economists, Business Schools, Researchers and Students in Higher Education, Entrepreneurs and Government and through their work to the general public.

Having had due regard to the commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant the Trustees have commissioned further interviews making efforts to ensure greater diversity of subject matter in order to widen our appeal and reflect the diversity of our intended audience. They have improved our public facing website www.archivesit.org.uk to allow access to both the additional interviews and new scanned hard-copy content. The Trustees have pursued links with education/academia in order to encourage wider use of the archive by the public in general and students in particular.

Section D Achievements and performance

In its seventh year of operation the charity has: Summary of the main achievements of the charity Recorded 37 further interviews with Achievers, had them transcribed and during the year collected additional archive materials from each person where available. Accepted into the archive a major collection of industry reports from Peter Cunningham, founder of the INPUT market research organisation and the archive of David Tebbutt’s business and consumer publications. Together with the archives of System House and Butler Cox these offer a rich resource for use by researchers of the industry. We are promoting them for use by academics and industry observers studying the development of the industry in the late twentieth century. Improved the website that holds all the interviews and archive material and presents it in an easily accessible manner – www.archivesit.org.uk – including the provision of online exhibitions on the history of the IT industry. Expanded our section on education with access to careers guidance resources for teachers and students, including lesson and other activity plans for Primary School children Continued to develop academic links with universities, including undertaking studies in conjunction with undergraduate and postdoctoral resources. In the period, students used archived interviews and documents to conduct studies on aspects of the industry’s development in the 20[th] century. Topics included the role of the National Research and Development Corporation post WW2 and the influence of the IT Department in the strategic use of technology in business. Maintained contacts with and received ongoing support from the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists and BCS – The Chartered Institute for IT, including the award of a grant for a project to produce a report and multimedia presentation on the history of the Human Computer Interface Run three webinar events presenting aspects of the history of computing and the Internet Received various donations to help continue our work.
