The main source of funds in the year was The National Lottery Community Fund which is to provide funding over a five year period commencing 2022.

The Trustees have decided to maintain the Reserves at a level equivalent to 5.5 months expenditure to ensure, in the event of unforeseen difficulties, there is sufficient time and funds available to wind up the scheme and meet contractual obligations.

a) Basis of Accounting

These accounts have been prepared on an accruals basis.

Home-Start East Surrey Overview Year ending 31st March 2024

Home-Start East Surrey is a local charity that supports families with young children up to the age of 11, living in Redhill, Reigate, Merstham, Caterham, Dorking, Horley & surrounding areas, to cope with the challenges of paren�ng and family life.

We recruit & train our bank of 44 volunteers to work with families for a few hours every week, primarily in their own home for up to 6 months. Our volunteers will also support families to access appointments and community ac�vi�es and events.

We run a weekly nurture group which supports new parents experiencing anxiety, isola�on or low mood for their babies first year. We regularly facilitate evidence based Paren�ng Programmes including the 10 week nurture programme, the 4 week Paren�ng Puzzle workshop and the 4 week Talking Teens course for parents of teenagers. We deliver jointly with the Mole Valley and Horley Family Centres, weekly Stay & Play sessions for invited parents with children under 5, who find it difficult for various reasons to access groups in the community.

The groups are also there when 1-1 volunteer support is completed, so we can s�ll maintain a ‘light touch’ source of support for families known to us.

We support families from all religious, ethnic, cultural or social backgrounds, irrespec�ve of gender, sexuality or any other factor that makes their family unique & special.

We treat everyone we work with as individuals & tailor our support to meet families’ par�cular needs.

- AGM Chair’s Report 2023 24

As each year goes by the trustees are more and more impressed by the support our staff team and volunteers are able to provide the local community. This is echoed by everyone who comes into contact with Home-Start East Surrey.

- This year much of our �me has been spent on the re procurement of funding from Surrey County Council. There have been significant changes in the way in which we are able to access this funding, which is now via various Lead Organisa�ons and is split by Borough. Although we do receive some funding, it has greatly reduced over recent years. The result of which means that our focus is on fundraising and applying for grants from other sources elsewhere. My grateful thanks goes to all those who con�nue to give us valuable - financial support. The team at Home Start Surrey give such a fantas�c service to members of the community, despite what may be going on in their own lives, and without their endless enthusiasm Home-Start East Surrey would not be the success that it is. Hotel in June, which raised a total of £22,000. An amazing amount considering it was our first event. I must thank Natalie Ans�ss for all of her

benefi�ed from all of her event planning & fundraising experience which was so helpful. From the generosity of the hotel, the corporate sponsors ‘etch. Crea�ve’ & ‘xeinadin’ who also provided our hilarious compere Alex, all the wonderful prize dona�ons & the volunteers who gave up their �me on the night, THANK YOU! It was a big success! We learnt a lot, & are looking to hold a similar event for our 30th birthday in 2026.

As we are one of eight local Home-Start Schemes in Surrey, moving forward we are looking at working more collabora�vely, by sharing good prac�ce & fundraising opportuni�es. June 2023 saw our first Home-Start Surrey strategy day, ge�ng together all the staff & Trustees in Surrey, to share in a joint vision. We were lucky to have Peter Grigg, Chief Execu�ve of HSUK with us who spoke about looking to the future & how we can be stronger & more influen�al working together.

Our Home Visi�ng Service was very much in demand, with 72 families receiving regular weekly support from one of our trained volunteers. Our regular targeted play session at the Mole Valley Family Centre for families in Dorking saw 31 families a�end, & 36 families at our similar weekly group in the Horley Family Centre. 46 parents a�ended one of our 10 week Paren�ng Puzzle Courses, workshops or Talking Teens programmes, run either in house, at the Mole Valley or Horley Family Centres or the Ashcombe School. We are delighted to be delivering these courses in conjunc�on with partners which we know makes such a posi�ve difference to family life. Our weekly Nurture Group supported 15 new parents on their paren�ng journey, with targeted advice in our group community room in Redhill.

Our ou�ngs included summer picnics in the Reigate Priory and the Redhill Memorial Park, another brilliant day at the Reigate Fire HQ where the 15 families sat on the fire engines, prac�ced with the fire hoses, met the fire dog Chester, & got fire safety advice for their homes. Thank you to Blue Watch for hos�ng us. Godstone farm was the venue for our family day out, where the children loved seeing all the animals! A�er last year’s success, our children’s Christmas party was held for the second �me at the Wacky Kingdom in Redhill. An amazing �me was had by all the children from the 48 families who came along. We were lucky to have the Mayor of Reigate & Banstead, Cllr Eddy Humphreys, come along to support us, and a special visit from Father Christmas, with gi�s for all the children. (Special thanks to Horley Lions)

I couldn’t do any of this without my amazing team around me, so a BIG thank you to my Scheme Coordinator Chris�ne Heaton, Perinatal Support Coordinator Lisa Wedderburn, Family Coordinator Lisa Kelly & my administrator Helen Sabath. They really are wonderful & hard working, & go above & beyond everyday to support volunteers & families for HSES.

Volunteers

We really could not do what we do without our bank of home visi�ng volunteers, who give up their �me for free to support our local families. Six new volunteers a�ended - our nine week prep course in 2023 2024, which equipped them with the tailored skills and confidence required to be a home visitor. We are so grateful for all of our volunteers who work with us, their dedica�on and reliability really means we can offer a service that can make a real posi�ve difference to children and families. Unfortunately we said goodbye to a few of our amazing volunteers during the past year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for everything they have done for us and wish them well with their future plans.

We con�nue to thank and appreciate our volunteers for their hard work and commitment they give to us, by hos�ng a summer a�ernoon tea and a Christmas lunch event during the year. This is our way of giving back to them, and is always a fun a�ernoon of delicious food prepared by the Team, a free prize draw and a fun quiz. We also hold regular coffee mornings with guest speakers, as a way of upskilling our volunteers with latest themes and good prac�ce around different subjects including Special Educa�onal needs, neurodiversity and school refusing. During all of these events, we give out long service awards, recognising the efforts of our army of - amazing volunteers here at Home Start East Surrey.

Our wonderful Trustees work �relessly in the background, but really are the back bone of HSES. Funding, Policies, Finance & Budge�ng as well as Safeguarding Children are just a few of their du�es, which have kept some of them extremely busy this year, all in their spare �me. Thank you all SO much!

Congratula�ons to our Chair of Trustees Stephanie Limond who was awarded with the ‘Individual Trustee Award 2023’ from Eddy Humphreys the Mayor of Reigate & Banstead. Stephanie is also the Chair of Home-Start Surrey which oversees all 8 local Home-Start Schemes in Surrey. Well done Stephanie!

We held a small, in�mate memorial service for our previous Scheme Manager Debbie Wade earlier this year, who sadly died in January. She was passionate about everything Home-Start, having worked here for over 10 years.
