Home-Start East Surrey Overview Year ending 31st March 2023

Home-Start East Surrey is a local charity that supports families with young children up to the age of 11, living in Redhill, Reigate, Merstham, Caterham, Dorking, Horley & surrounding areas, to cope with the challenges of parenting and family life.

We recruit & train our bank of volunteers to work with families for a few hours every week, primarily in their own home for up to 6 months. Our volunteers will also support families to access appointments and community activities and events. We run a weekly nurture group which supports new parents experiencing anxiety, isolation or low mood for their babies first year. We regularly facilitate the evidence based Parenting Puzzle 10 week nurture programme, and the 4 week workshop. We deliver jointly with the Mole Valley and Holey Family Centres, weekly Stay & Play sessions for invited parents with children under 5, who find it difficult for various reasons to access groups in the community. Families are able to access these groups when 1-1 volunteer support is completed, so we can still maintain a ‘light touch’ source of support for families known to us.

We support families from all religious, ethnic, cultural or social backgrounds, irrespective of gender, sexuality or any other factor that makes their family unique & special. We treat everyone we work with as individuals & tailor our support to meet families’ particular needs.

AGM Chair’s Report 2022-23

Looking back over the last twelve months there have been some highlights worthy of mention. We were extremely excited and grateful to have been given support from The National Lottery Community Fund to continue the invaluable work carried out by Home-Start East Surrey. Anna, our Scheme Manager and the whole team have worked tirelessly throughout the year and their achievements are mentioned in this report. As ever, to be able to reach as many families as we do, our funding position is always one of the major concerns for the board of trustees. This involves significant planning by reaching out to various organisations for their support, and this help from many local funders helps us to assure the longevity of Home-Start East Surrey.

I would like to add my personal thanks to the staff, volunteers and fellow trustees for their passion, dedication and enthusiasm in everything they do to support families and be champions of Home-Start East Surrey.

Home-Start East Surrey saw the return of our usual service post Covid, and more family referrals that ever before.

We increased our partnership working by starting a second weekly play group for invited parents at the Horley Family Centre. This has proved very popular and well attended, as was our existing group at the

Mole Valley Family Centre for families in Dorking and the surrounding Mole Valley area. 43 parents benefitted from the three

10 week Parenting Puzzle programmes delivered in-house and a 4 week Parenting Workshop run jointly with the Horley Family Centre. Our weekly Nurture Group regularly supported new parents on their parenting journey, with targeted advice in our group room here in Redhill. Our Home Visiting Service was very much in demand, with 84 families receiving regular weekly support from one of our trained volunteers. Last summer we were invited to an open morning at the Reigate Fire HQ where the children were treated to a wonderful morning of sitting on a fire engine and helping with the water hoses. They met the fire dog Chester, and parents were given fire safety advice for their homes from the Fire Safety Team.

Our annual outing took place at Godstone Farm in September 2022, which has become a regular event for us now. The sun was shining, and the children loved seeing and feeding all the animals. Our family Christmas party was held for the first time at the Wacky Kingdom in Redhill, and an amazing time was had by the 44 families who attended. We were lucky to have the Mayor of Reigate & Banstead, Cllr Frank Kelly, come along to support us, and a special visit from Father Christmas, with gifts for all the children. (Special thanks to Horley Lions)

Our Strategy….

Volunteers

During 2022-2023 a further 5 new volunteers completed their training by attending our 9 week Prep Course. This was followed by a celebratory lunch to acknowledge their success in completing our comprehensive training which will equip them with the skills and confidence to go out and support our local families who need them.

Sadly, we said goodbye to a few of our amazing volunteers during the past year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their commitment in supporting local families and wish them well with their future plans.

Our way of thanking and recognizing our volunteers and the hard work and commitment they give to us, is to host a summer afternoon tea and a Christmas lunch event during the year, as well as regular coffee mornings with guests speakers. During these events we give out long service awards, recognizing the efforts of our army of amazing volunteers here at Home-Start East Surrey.

We continue to be well supported by the Horley Lions, who provided many of our families with festive food packs last Christmas. These packs contained both the essentials and those extra luxuries that families appreciate. Waitrose stores in Horley, Dorking and Caterham provided some extra special Christmas food supplies for our families as part of their continued #givealittlelovecampaign with HSUK.

Stripey Stork, the baby bank in Reigate, kindly provided our families with essential clothes and equipment needed throughout the year, and Mothers Day gifts this year for our lovely mums, which were all gratefully received.

Special thanks goes out to Morrison’s in Reigate and in particular, Sue Lumley who was their Community Champion. Their generosity has been wonderful throughout the year, supplying us with picnic lunches for our children, ingredients for our volunteer lunches and food bags for Christmas and in January, as we know this can be a particularly tricky time financially.

We could not do what we do without our volunteers. We are extremely grateful to you for giving up your spare time to support local families. Your support really is life changing. Thank you!

Our wonderful Trustees work tirelessly in the background, but really are the back bone of HSES. Funding, Policies, Finance & Budgeting as well as Safeguarding Children are just a few of their duties, which have kept some of them extremely busy this year, all in their spare time.

a) Basis of Accounting

These accounts have been prepared on an accruals basis.

b) Income

Grants, donations and bank interest are generally credited to the statement of financial activities in the period in which they are received. By exception, income is accrued into the appropriate year, if funds are received in a different year to the one intended.
