## **01**[INTRODUCTION BY] THE CHAIR _Will Morse_

delivered racket sports to over 1130 children and adults within the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, maintaining our focus on special educational needs and disability, mental health, players from ethnic minorities and women and girls - all showing significant figures in our Impact Report.

A key highlight of the year was the beginning of the Foundation’s support for junior wheelchair player Leo-Charlesworth Mark. Leo attended our SEND festival in April 2023 and the Foundation has provided him with ongoing opportunity and support which is detailed in the case study in this report. Our office team has invested an enormous amount of effort into bringing more depth to our SEND outreach work beginning with the April festival, which welcomed children from both the local borough and across the South East to participate in a fun and friendly session at Queen’s.

The Trustees’ Report and Annual Review for October 2023 to September 2024 reflects a year of development and consolidation for The Queen’s Club Foundation (QCF). It was an honour for me to succeed Tina Sawyer Smith as Chair and I’m hugely grateful to our Foundation team and to our Trustees for all their dedication and commitment in taking The QCF forward in our mission to improve lives through racket sports.

Our impact figures demonstrate the contribution The QCF is making locally to children and adults who participate in our community club activities, which are all free. Our annual tennis survey revealed that of those who have participated in our community outreach sessions, 90% plan to play tennis in the future and 72.5%

Our work this year has focused on scaling our outreach work especially to those who may not have access to racket sports, often because of background or circumstances. We

noticed they had more confidence. While we continue to focus on driving more participants into our programmes, a key measure of our success is also to monitor the social outcomes of our programmes and we are proud that inclusivity is at the forefront of everything.

The majority of our work continues to take place locally, yet increasingly our work has national recognition (due to the excellent programmes, social media exposure and our link with The Queen’s Club itself). We were

the proud winners this year of the Middlesex Tennis County Award and the Regional winner of the LTA Connecting Communities Award as well as National Finalists and are grateful to the LTA for recognising our hard work in this respect.

Our on-court activation events surrounding the cinch Championships (the ATP 500 tennis event held in June) show the local impact we are having on children and their families enabling us to deliver community sport in line with the LTA’s message of “Tennis Opened Up” locally and inspiring others nationally. We were also proud to welcome over 50 children and adults to the tournament with the assistance of the LTA Tennis Foundation this year, providing inspirational opportunities for many to see tennis at a professional level.

Fundraising continues to be a major focus for our charity. We are most grateful to The Queen’s Club Board, The Queen’s Club (QC) and its members for the support we receive.

Our continued support from major donors and family trusts and foundations is also

hugely appreciated. We are also grateful to the Goldman Sachs Community Teamworks team for supporting us with volunteers and funding for one of our Summer outreach camps this year. The QCF is also proud to

have continued work on our Community Hub 3 year funded project by The LTA Tennis Foundation.

**We delivered racket sports to over + 1130 children & adults last year**

We are continuing to develop our Friends Scheme, inviting regular donations which are so important to the long-term sustainability of our charity.

**On behalf of The Trustees, I would like to thank all those who have contributed over the year to the vibrant health of the Charity – including coaches, volunteers, club members, staff at the Club, The QCF office team and all our incredibly generous donors and partners, without whom we would not be able to make such a difference and continue “improving lives through racket sports”.**

## **02** REVIEW BY THE HEAD OF FOUNDATION _Kate Maurici_

A highlight for me this year has been the development of our work in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Starting with our SEND family festival in April, we have developed our outreach work in this area, increasing the number of those involved from 28 to 203 players. We were delighted to have helped junior Leo Charlesworth Mark to get started on his exciting wheelchair tennis journey and I hope you enjoy reading the case study about his progress.

work which everyone puts in on a daily basis to develop grassroots racket sports, making a real difference to our local community.

Our seniors tennis started small and now has a vibrant community feel about every session. Players have turned up whatever the weather, with enthusiasm to our dementia friendly tennis sessions. The benefit of these sessions goes far beyond acquiring new tennis skills for individuals. It has been a privilege to witness the joy the sessions have created amongst the players but also amongst their carers and supporters, providing an opportunity to socialise and share experiences. The expansion of our team to welcome our new Head Coach and programmes co-ordinator, Karin Govan, has further increased the number of sessions we have been able to provide across our community programmes.

It was a privilege to collect both the Middlesex Tennis Award and the Regional LTA “Connecting Communities” award on behalf of the Foundation this year. I am lucky to be supported by an incredibly passionate office team and wider team of coaches and volunteers and these awards are an enormously welcome recognition of the hard

Working with young people has been a big focus this year for us, both by training new LTA Youth Tennis leaders from local schools, but also working closely with coaches and volunteers from King’s College University Tennis Club. We will continue to build on our Youth focus next year. We are particularly grateful to KCL Tennis, who not only supported us at a number of our outreach events , but also raised money for the QCF through a series of student fundraising events.

We also expanded our work in squash, real tennis and rackets this year, developing our curriculum time provision, and introducing new outreach days for primary schools. 100% of teachers reported an improved attitude towards sports as a result of the sessions. We are laying the foundations for even more

outreach work in these sports in the coming years.

I feel very proud of the work we have achieved also working with local underserved communities and with women & girls. All of our community work, only succeeds because of the relationships we have built up with local schools, venues, the local authority and other charities. Thank you to all in these networks who have worked with us to achieve

a common goal of improving lives through grassroots sport. I have tried to include all those who have supported us at the close of this report, but I also specifically wanted to thank the parents and teachers of the children and the carers of the adults with dementia on our community programmes. You are essential to enabling us to provide the services we offer and you are hugely appreciated.

TRUSTEES’ REPORT

## TRUSTEES’ REPORT

**The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their annual report, incorporating the directors’ report, for the purpose of the Charities Act 2011 and sections 415 to 419 of the Companies Act 2016, together with the accounts for the year ended 30 September 2024. The Trustees have adopted the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) “Accounting and Reporting by Charities” (FRS 102) in preparing the annual report and financial statements of the Charity**

## **Structure governance and management**

The Queen’s Club Foundation is a charitable company, incorporated on 19 February 2015 (registered company number 09449213) governed by a Memorandum of Association and registered as a charity 28 October 2015 (registered charity number 1164144).

The Foundation is the Official Charity of The Queen’s Club and is supported by The Queen’s Club Board, staff and Members. The Board, in pursuit of its objectives is pleased with the progress it has made.

The Trustees (listed on page 3) are Trustees of the Charity and Members & Directors of the Company. Trustees are appointed by an ordinary

resolution of the member Trustees of the Charity and as set out in the Articles of Association.

When considering new Trustees, the Board has regard to the requirement for any specialist skills, for example past experience in organising charitable events, fundraising skills, knowledge of inclusive sport, as well as past experience in serving similar charities. TRUSTEES’ REPORT

## OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

## **The main objects of the Charity, as defined in the Governing Documents, are:**

For the public benefit the promotion of community participation, especially among children and young people, in healthy recreation in particular in the sports of lawn tennis, real tennis, squash and rackets (the Sports) and to assist in the development of the skills of those playing the Sports in such ways as are exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales as the Trustees think fit, including but not limited to, by: 1. Providing grants to other charities that promote community participation in the sports; and 2. Providing grants and other financial assistance to or for the benefit of children and young people in need of such assistance, to allow them to participate in one or more of the Sports

In determining the activities to be undertaken by the Charity in furtherance of these objects, the Trustees have given regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. The QCF safeguarding policy has been placed on the QCF website. This year The Queen’s Club Foundation has continued to focus its activities towards the promotion of improving lives through community participation of racket sports, rather than re-opening our grant funding rounds to individuals and organisations. This maximises the impact of The QCF locally and ensures that the charity makes a real difference to people’s lives through sport. The charity may re-open its grant funding under a new scheme in future years.

SENIORS TENNIS (DEMENTIA FRIENDLY)

Our dementia friendly tennis classes go from strength to strength. We have been able to run these year round this year, utilising local parks venue, Bishop’s Park in the warmer months and then moving to Queen’s in the winter months, using the rackets courts. The classes provide an opportunity for the over 65’s who might be socially isolated or have disabilities to be active and enjoy a sense of community through tennis. Our partnership with the Masbro Elders Centre has continued to support attendance at these classes and we are also grateful to Hammersmith & Fulham who have facilitated the free use of the courts at Bishop’s Park, making this class part of their Active Minds programme.

The session was absolutely great and I am so happy because I never expected it to be anything like this. It was so enjoyable and today is my very bad day, I call it “bad bone day” but because here we were very close I did not have to run or make very stretchy movements so I could play without any aches and it was most enjoyable.

– BEATA , AGED 72

They have exercises at the beginning which test your memory – for example you have to say a capital city when you hit the balloon, and you can’t repeat them as you go around the group, it is a bit like a game show!

– DAN, SESSION ATTENDEE

He definitely looks forward to coming to the sessions, and afterwards he is in a much better mood. When he is doing something and having to engage his brain, it helps, and as I said, he loves to chat, and when it is the just the two of us at home, it can be quite intense, but you know, we come here and he chats to everyone, which also gives me a break.

WORKING TOGETHER WITH YOUNG VOICES IN OUR COMMUNITY

**It is hugely important to us to work closely with the youth within our community. Listening to the voice of the youth helps us to shape what we are doing to improve lives of children within the community we serve.**

**44 new LTA Youth Leaders trained 7**

We have focussed our efforts this year in this area by engaging youth volunteers, training LTA Youth Leaders to assist on our programmes and at events, mentoring coaches, and developing our collaboration with King’s College London University Tennis (KCL Tennis).

The delivery of the Leaders’ course was excellent. Umpiring matches at the schools event then developed these leadership skills.

– DEBBIE MASON FULHAM CROSS GIRLS SCHOOL

## **Youth Case Study One** KING’S COLLEGE LONDON UNIVERSITY TENNIS CLUB

We enjoyed our collaboration with KCL Tennis this year, enabling students to give back to their local community and assist us to widen participation in racket sports to those in underserved communities and to minority groups.

## **The Queen’s Club Foundation:**

– Supported KCL on court at their inaugural Tennis Open day, which engaged over 250 students.

– Assisted with the delivery of a Disability History Month tennis event at The Queen’s Club, where 16 KCL students were trained to deliver disability tennis.

– Enabled 3 students to develop their coaching skills under the mentorship of our coaching team on our weekly outreach programmes and community events including our SEND festival, centre court celebration, schools games and numerous other community festivals.

– Provided an opportunity for students to fundraise and support our outreach programmes.

– Sponsored the KCL official Varsity and Macadam Kit with the QCF logo.

## SKYE–BAYLEI

We met Skye-Baylei, during one of our outreach sessions at the London Sports Trust SAFE Camp taking place at The Phoenix Academy in White City. It became apparent immediately that Skye had excellent leadership qualities and a real talent for enthusing and organising other students on court.

We trained Skye to become an LTA Youth Leader and she went on to volunteer to help with the children at our regular community club sessions every Sunday morning. At the cinch Championships, Skye was one of the children invited to the tournament draw, where children from the QCF got to meet tournament director Jamie Murray and help pull the players names out of the hat. We are hoping that once the next few busy years at school are over that we can encourage Skye to take her Level 1 LTA Tennis coaching qualification, but even without that we have contributed in a small way to assisting Skye to start out on her coaching and leadership journey.

## **Youth Case Study Three** ONSIDE LAW CHARITY EVENT

We were delighted to be invited to support the On-side Law charity event at Queen’s this year, where children from both the QCF and Greenhouse Sports were invited to the The Queen’s Club to hear inspirational stories from people working in different exciting sporting careers, and also to receive a valuable workshop in CV writing skills. The QCF provided an engaging tour of the Club for those attending the event. The session enabled local children both to visit this inspirational venue, but also to benefit from the expertise and encouragement of those who have chosen careers in sport.

## ENGAGEMENT WITH UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

This year our work within the LTA Serves Level-Up London Project has enabled us to mentor youth workers from the London Sports Trust to develop their tennis offering at their regular SAFE Camps. The aim of the camps is to keep children, who are predominantly from disadvantaged and low income backgrounds, active during the holidays. Our mentoring enabled the youth workers to learn how to deliver progressive tennis coaching sessions and Team Challenge competition events, which are now a regular integral part of the camps.

I learned so much from Kate, the Head of the QCF. She helped to take my tennis delivery to a new level. The children had so much fun doing her team challenges and a handful have been spurred on by the experience to explore the tennis world further.

**Supporting underserved communities Case Study One** KEVIN NATHANIEL

We met Kevin through our support for the London Sports Trust SAFE Camp in 2023. This year, as part of the award winning LTA Serves Level Up-London Project, our Head of Foundation, Kate Maurici mentored Kevin, helping him to build on his existing youth worker and boxing skills to develop key tennis coaching skills.

QCF support for projects such as these help to embed tennis within underserved communities in a sustainable way.

The session with the QCF coach was fantastic. I want to be a tennis coach now! If I were 20

years younger, I would have really pursued it. Rob was great, and all the kids seemed happy to have me around. The group was slightly older and a bit “fresh.” I’m so used to dealing with cheeky kids, but in the end, I had them asking to work with me. It was really great. Thanks so much for helping me out, Kate.

We are delighted that, following his mentoring sessions, Kevin was inspired to register on the LTA Level 1 coaching qualification and the QCF has continued to support Kevin, by offering him the opportunity to shadow our qualified coaches as part of his course. Kevin’s dedication has been phenomenal and he is an absolute asset to the sport.

As a result, tennis activities are now a regular part of the sessions both at the Phoenix Academy and at the Canalside Activity Centre, where the London Sports Trust run free camps for children, the majority of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds. Kevin progressed from watching sessions to running his own coaching session and then delivering an LTA Team Challenge event. The

The QCF has allowed my daughter to play tennis twice a week, which would not be possible without their support. She has grown in confidence and her playing is improving which is wonderful to see. It has also helped her mental health during a challenging period at school. We are very grateful for the QCF supporting us in this way.

We continued to deliver racket sports coaching to **535 women & girls,**

## WOMEN & GIRLS

Inspiring woman and girls in racket sports is at the forefront of what we do at the QCF. Our female executive team comprises Head of Foundation, Kate Maurici and Head Coach and Programmes coordinator, Karin Govan. With this strong female leadership team, and our Board of Trustees we are committed to raising the profile of women and girls in racket sports.

Of the **44 leaders trained** this year

My daughter was inspired by the 2 young champions she saw play at the last QCF festival and she now pushes herself to improve her tennis. She has also developed strong relationships with some other players. She is a bookworm and she was reluctant to do any physical activity or go outdoors if it wasn’t for tennis. Now we know she can enjoy sports and we introduced her to more outdoor activities.

**We are proud of what we have achieved this year and look forward to continuing to create more opportunities for women and girls to enjoy racket sports in anticipation of the return of the WTA event to Queen’s in 2025.**

Each year in June, The Queen’s Club hosts one of the biggest tournaments of the ATP calendar (and soon to be the WTA calendar in addition), the cinch Championships, attracting tennis fans from around the world giving The QCF an opportunity to showcase its work at the prestigious event.

During the cinch Championships, with the assistance of The Club and the LTA Tennis Foundation, we opened up the possibility, for over 50 children and adults to experience the event via interviews on court, coin tosses and even the chance to take part in the tournament draw and meet tournament director, Jamie Murray.

Outside the event, at local parks and council venues, the QCF delivered fun team challenge competitions and also partnered with Hammersmith & Fulham Council to local refugees and asylum seekers currently in temporary accommodation. – The QCF’s promotional video

was played on screens throughout the event to spread awareness.

– Following the event, thanks to the former Queen’s Club Chairman Simon Greenwell, The QCF invited a group of Community Club players to play on Centre Court at a celebration event.

## ~~**10**~~ SCHOOLS ENGAGEMENT

Working with local primary and secondary schools to promote racket sports is an essential element of our outreach work.

– This year we delivered primary and secondary school tennis teacher training to over 50 teachers in Richmond and Hammersmith & Fulham, enabling them to access further offers of equipment and free coaching from the LTA to provide continuing tennis coaching within their own schools.

– We linked once again with St Paul’s School, who offered their facilities for free generously to our community programmes across the year.

**The school’s games event was well-organised and everyone had lots of fun.**

– We ran the Hammersmith & Fulham Schools Games Tennis events, with the support of Leaders from our QCF Youth Programme and coaches from our community club team.

– M. LEE HOLY CROSS SCHOOL

## **Schools Case Study One**

Through our partnership with St Paul’s School, part of the West London Partnership, we were able to offer 6 tennis camps to children from underserved communities, including many children from a local Ukranian School. 2 of these camps were our muchloved “Tennis Rave Camps”, which we introduced last year, as part of the activities on the Fulham Boat Reach Free Water Sports week. Teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds enjoyed several hours of fun tennis activity at St Paul’s School. The final camp was supported by a team of volunteers from the Goldman Sachs Community Teamworks team. Goldman Sachs also generously sponsored the event.

THANK YOU so much for your brilliant tennis raves at St Paul’s School during our Free Water Sports Weeks (FWW), both sessions were fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed by all. We had different conditions each time but the even the weather couldn’t dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of your team and the participants.

Robbie, one of the QCF coaches, is great at motivating the children, we have a few children who would give up very easily, when Robbie noticed this he would have a 1 to 1 where he would focus on helping that particular child. This greatly helped the children, with less ability and low confidence, feel motivated to continue with squash and want to come back.

– TEACHER, SIR JOHN LILLIE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Pupils displayed resilience throughout the weekly sessions and Coach Yawar’s positive interactions with the children helped to boost their confidence.

We expanded our Real Tennis, Squash and Rackets outreach days, enabling more children to access a variety of racket sports.

We had a fantastic visit today to Queen’s to experience Real Tennis, thank you so much for helping to organise. The students' had the best time, it really brought learning to life! Thank you.

– TEACHER, CHISWICK SCHOOL

We also, through our partnership with Squash Squared, enabled a class of primary school children to attend the inspirational Optasia Squash Championships, where they had the opportunity to watch international squash. An experience which a teacher from St. Augustine’s School describes:

“The Squash Championship was a brilliant experience. The children really enjoyed watching professional players and were excited to get a number of autographs at the event. One pupil described it as ‘the best trip of all time!’”

## FINANCIAL REVIEW

The Foundation’s income supports the promotion and delivery of community activity in racket sports as well as the project management of that activity and our daily overheads. This year we generated gross income of £236,248 (2023: £190,372). We monitor the support costs of the Foundation carefully and this year, our cost to income ratio was 30.1%.

In our continuing drive to generate more sustainable income, we applied successfully to organisations and family foundations, whilst still raising funds from events. Our strategy is to generate longer term recurring income to support our long-term ambitions. We have benefited from a generous donation from The Queen’s Club, which enabled us to cover our core costs, thus allowing the Foundation to devote funds directly to activities for the community. As the Foundation and its activities grow, we have increased the capital allocated to reserves to reflect our prudent accounting approach.

At the balance sheet date, our total funds amount to £308,048 (2023: £219,858) with restricted funds totalling £3,699 (2023: £24,546) and unrestricted funds of 304,349 (2023: £195,312). Within this total, we set aside reserves this year of £100,000

## THE FUTURE **12**

**In the next year, 2024-2025, The QCF has a number of exciting outreach racket sports projects. These will build on the solid foundation of community outreach work which has already brought us National recognition.**

– Expansion of our inclusive sessions across all sports including the addition of Para-Standing and Visually Impaired sessions.

– Developing player pathways from grassroots participation to competitive opportunities.

– Expansion of our squash outreach, delivering a sommunity project in the Borough focussing on player pathways, maximising the physical, social and mental benefits of the sport to those from underserved communities.

welcoming women back to the Championships, including a Women in Leadership event for local teenage girls, and a Borough wide tennis activation programme in collaboration with the LTA.

– Continue to build our volunteer workforce, which has already developed this year thanks both to KCL Tennis and also to The Queen’s Club for introducing the staff volunteer programme.

- Increasing our engagement with our team of player ambassadors: including Dan Evans (Tennis), Naqi Rizvi (VI Tennis), Nicky Maxwell (Para-Standing Tennis), Pippa Horn (Sports Presenter) and Georgina Kennedy (Squash). We look forward to harnessing their passion for their sports and desire to give back to maximise opportunity for children and adults in racket sports.
