The objects of the Charity are, principally in the borough of Cheltenham. to promote the arts
generally and to advance education, the Christian faith, religious harmony, citizenship and

events and activities in these areas of the town, in order to enable wider access.
The Festival encourages and Works Ilryth churches. schools and other community groups to

In the light of ciirrent debates about religious rndicali%alion. Cheltenham Chrislian Arts aims
lo promote inleraction and underslanding betsveen faiihs. The motto of ihe Christian Arts
Festival is to challenge and engage as well as to celebrdte and entertain. The aim of our
interfaiih eN'ents is to encourage Christians and people of other faiths to interact and build
social cohesion through greater understanding.
Also benefiting from the Festival and its related aclii'ities are organisations supporting
deprived comn)IiniÉies, those with physical and mental health issuc5: disadvantaged young
peoplc and the socially isolated.

through innovative and fresh expressions of faith throubh events and ivorkshops.

GOSPEL 2023 explored the Christian Faith through a diverse mixed arts festival with
compctilions, workshops and perfonnances. An ini'ilation to everyone. of all agies, including
those of different faiths and no faith: to explore fresh per5pec¢ivLS in vibrant iv8y%. We
fiilfillcd OUT aim to spark curiosili, and introduce or reacquaint peDple with our Go%pL'I (good
iicws) of Inith and hope. One highlight ei'cnt which launched thi% y"ear's offerings was an art
exhibition in the Gardens tiallery situated in the centre of Cheltenhani over the Easter period.
An opportunity through Art inspired by the Gospels to discuss the Easter Story ivith visitors,
ni(In}' of whom had no intention of attending an Easler service in a church. Man), challengiiig
conversalion5 ensued and a numbcr of misconceptions were erased. Lvents coiitinued to

promole deeper understanding of the Gospel story. UDity aryiongsl churches, relationsliips
buill across failli dii'ides, people le(￿￿]ng1 to eAprcss thcTnscli'es througTlI arl, skills
acqui51tionldevelopmcnl, public rL"rforn)dnce nelii'orks. to church-based supporl, people
h1¢ ving and ¢njo)'able and engagtng time.
Further highlights included a Gospel song-MTitin8 competition inspired by the unique cultural
roots of Ciospcl music with a recording pri7£ and performed b}T the headline act F.AGA
GospLI Choir (winners of the BBC Gospel Choir 2023) at the finale of Gospe123 at
Cheltenham 'fown Hall.
I"here was a "New Life" themed art competition: open to )'ounger age &Jroups as well a5

FOT children thLre was Gemma 14uni from CBeebies and gyps), author Richard O'Neill,
National Ccntre of Children's Books: in the neil, arts community space at St Philip and St
Janies Church. In the months leading up to ihe Literature day a regular study group met at Pip
and Jim's to read and discuss Dante's Dii'ine Comedy.
At the Town Hall, a new dtama b). Saltmine Theatre,
' The Liberator," offercd a passionate
retelling of the life and teaching of Jesus to which over 90 young people ￿'¢re li'en fr¢L
tickets thanks to a generous spon50r. Other eitenls (It the I Idll includLd ￿'OrkshOp￿ on
Christian mcditation: bible art journalling, and singing before ihe Grand finale featuring
spoken word perforn]ance, song compclition winners and the EAGA Gospel Choir. The great
success of the evening iv&s reflecied in ihe generosity in the buckel collections after the
concert.

After 7 years of putling on feslivals ive have accrued 800 followers on our database, plus
2,000 on Facebook, 1,000 on X(fonnerly Twitter) and 800 on Instagratn.
385 people took part in the art competition. both open and student categories.
3J people entered the gospel song-writing competition.
25 people attended the Dante Study Group.
Over l 00 people attended the Literature Day.

Over 1,000 people visited the Gardens Gallery during the Easter week

Ongoing Plans for 202312024
Beck Donaldson reached the end of her third tenn of oifice and stepped down in Oclober
2023. We are looking lo recruit two new trustees.
2024 will be a lime of prayerfull), refocussing our mission aJ)d vision. To this end we are
planning an away day with the help of a spiritual director in 2024.
We will continue to sup￿Trrt and facililate churches and art organisations with extra markeling
through our newsletters and social Tnedia nehvorks.
From January to April Pip and Jim's are hosting lectures on Christian theme5 in Shakespeare,
culniinaling in a whole day of events including a liturgy based on a MidsuTnn]er Night's
Dream, inspired b}, the success of our Dante's Dii'ine Comedy stud) group.
We are recrLllting primary schools to host perfonnances of 4front Theatre's lour of their new
drEuna"The Parable Keepef.
Financial Review
This year the main activities ivere a Literats￿e Day at Pip & Jim's in Lkckhampton, followed
by a day of ￿'OrkshopS and events at the Town Hall: culminating in a Gospel concert with the
EAGA choir..
Income was £12,659 (2022: £26:594). Expenditure was £18,499 (2022.. £25,729), resulting in
a deficit of £5.840 (2021- sutplu5 £865). The main differences betiveen 2023 and 202? were
that no further grants were received for salary. so the ren)aining balance from previous years
used to pav ? months salar}, and redundanc}' for the project leader. As the eiienls this
year wcre ticketed, the balance beiween grant funding and iicket sales u'as different.
Reserves have iherefore decreased to £3?14, (202?: £9:053). The onl), restricted fund is now
the final third of a grant for capital equipment ￿,hiCh is aTh'aiting next l'ear's depreciation
cliarge. Accrued gift aid. including some gift aid on donations toM'ard5 the fom'n Hall el'ent IS

At thc end of thc period, cash in the bank and ai hand amounted 10 £2,421, a decrease of
aliiiost tlie saniL' as thc accounting dcficil. Ongoing monthl!, subs and bank charges amount to
around £50, which is equal to the amounl of regular giN'ing (pre gift aid) receivable.
Wc arc extremely graleful to Westhill Endowmeni Trust, as well as to all our iiidividual
donors.
During the }'ear project leadership wa5 PTovidcd on a voluntary, basis. ￿le are in the process
of developing a job description for this role, to explore either finding anotlier project leader
'illing lo volunteer, or to include an allowance for projecl management fees in future grant
applications.
Risk Management
The Trustees regularly rel'iew and monitor the risks associated ivitl) nmning the Charity.
The principal risks are financial: in the requirement to commit expenditure in the adi,￿ce
planning and m(irkeling of actii'itie5 and Ll'L'nts, and in the risk that expendilures exeLed
projected income from ticket sales, donations and grant applications. Post pandemic
audience5 seem to book vcry late. and are reduced from what they used to be. Illithout a paid
project leader role we also nm the risk of not having enough resource to organise events.

I report on the accounts of the Charity for the period ended 31 October 2023. which are set out in
the attached Statement of Financial ArtiVTtie5 ISOFAI. Balance Sheet. and Note5 to the Accounts.
The trustees of the Charwty are ￿spOnsIble for the preparation of the accounts. The Chartty's trustees
consider that an audit 15 not required for thi5 period under Sectron 145 of the Charities Act 2011, but
that an independent examination is needed.

No Goi'ernance costs have been in¢uTred this year. again due to the kindness
of volunteers.
One reimbursement for out-of-pocket expense5 made to a Truslee. The
