In the five years prior to the Covid pandemic, the charity focused largely on rebuilding schools destroyed by the earthquakes in April 2015. Since then, the Trustees have refined the focus of the chariws work to four key areas: provision of finance for selected infrastructure projects at schools, which could add significant value but could not realistically be funded locally- provision of stationery and other essential materials to the various schools which the charity has helped in the past; provision of Women's Health education for schools and associated communitles. working in partnership with the international charity Days 4 Girls,. and provision of computer rooms and associated equipment for secondary schools. working in partnership with another specialist charity. Edutech Nepal {'Edutech'l. The charity has developed close relationships with its two key partner charities: Days 4 Girls is an international NGO advancing menstrual equity, health, dignity and opportunity for all girls and women. The charity's programmes. delivered by its local representatives, are genuinely life-changing for gir15 Imany of whom would othenmise be effectively excluded from School once they start menstruatinBI and for their wider families and communities. YVY Foundation assists in identifying Suitable schoo15 for the provision of programmes and providing funding; and Edutech. a long-standing NGO in Nepal, which provides excellent computer rooms to schools acr055 the country. Under the leadership of New Zealand tech entrepreneur Mike Chisholm, Edutech has refined the process of school selection and the design of computer rooms and their contents, and has to date established computer rooms at more than 200 Nepalese schools, all to Edutech's design and specification. Foundation entered into a non-legally binding Memorandum of Understanding with Edutech during 2022, with a view to identifying suitable schools and co-funding computer rooms. Following a year in which there was no Trustee representation in Nepal. as noted in last yearfs Trustee5' Report we invested considerable time and money this year into two trips to the country. With representatives from Days 4 Gir15 and Edutech, the Trustees travelled to two remote areas of Nepal: Mugu in Western Nepal and Bardiya in the South West of the country. Mugu is a very remote region which has had littleor no 5UPPOrtfrom NGOsto date, and which stru88les with poverty and deprivation alongside very traditional attltudes. Having evaluated these areas, we believe that we can make a really significant dlfference through providing Womens, Health training and access to IT technology in these regions. In Mu8u, four schools were visited.. The main school in Mugu's capital Gumghadi. the area's largest school Womens, Health training was delivered by Days 4 Girls. Discussions have taken place regarding the provision of a computer room, which is now planned for 2025- Soru school - Days 4 Girls also delivered training here. Edutech have completed report on the school, and a computer room may be provided at some stage in the next two years, with a decision to be made on this in due course; Sorukot school. a sizeable school with a large contingent of boarders from various remote villages in the region Womens, Health training is yet to be completed here, but Edutech have finished their report on the school and a computer room is planned for provision in 2025; and Another large school close to Gumghadi which was visited, and where it is intended to progress both Womens, Health training and a computer room, subject to Edutech review. A fifth Mugu school was also identified, although access to this school was problematlc thls year. In Bardiya, a number of schools were visited, with two identified for immedlate progress: Jagadamba school and Shiva Sundar school. During the trip, Days 4 Girls completed Womens, Health training at both schools; since then, Edutech have completed reports on both schools, and computer rooms have subsequently been finished at both schools. There are several more schools in this area planned for further work in the future. In total, the charity paid £6,139 to Day5 for Girls for theirtraining services in Mugu and Bardiya during the year. In addition, before the year end we committed to provide £5,900 lin part from the Mazars Charitable Trust funding received last yearl to co-fund the now completed computer rooms at the two Bardiya schools- this expenditure was unpaid but accrued at the year end in the accounts. The Trustee trips this year have laid the groundwork for life changing work across a portfolio of schools in the two remote areas selected by the Trustees. We are planning a further trip to the areas in 2026, which should come at a lower cost and facilitate further Women5' Health training at a minimum of four schools and up to six new computer rooms in conjunction with Edutech. Whilst moving from Mugu to Bardlya in Ottober 2023, Trustees Sera and Sarah Gurung travelled through Jajarkot in Western Nepal,. shortly after this, Jajarkot was hit by an earthquake which caused significant damage and killed or injured a number of residents. Given the difficulty of getting supplies into the area, Sera and Sarah decided to mount their own relief efft)rt and travelled back into the area with vltal supplies which they successfully delivered, at a cost to the charlty of £1,737. The Trustees have continued their fundraising actlvlties this year, generating total income of £4,128. Given the extent of the planned work in Mugu and Bardiya, and expenditures this year, the Trustees wlll be strongly focused on fundraising in the comin8 months. As ever, the charity has fflinimal running costs. with total costs this year excluding Nepal visits of only £188. This of course means that almost all of the funds raised by the charity can be used directly for charitable purposes in Nepal. Most of the £13,776 spent on projects in Nepal this year was funded from cash resources brought forward from previous years. However, the charSty remained in a robust financial position at the year end, with funds of just over £19.000 in the bank as at 30 September 2024. This will be sufficient to fund a substantial part of our planned women's health support and contributions to school computer rooms alongside Edutech in Mugu and Bardiya; but in order to fund everything we plan to achieve in these areas in the coming years, new funds will need to be raised. We will never commit to any expenditure for which we do not already have funds. The Trustees consider that the ideal minimum level of free reserves as at 30 September 2024 is £2,Oc￿. Free reserves held at the year-end were £13,418. In practice, the Trustees endeavour to keep at least £10.￿0 of uncommitted cash available, so that they can be in a position to commit to project expenditures knowing that the necessary funds are in place,. on this basis at the year end YYY Foundation had reserves available for projects of £3,418, which it plans to enhance significantly with fundraisinB over the coming months. YYY Foundation is a Charitable Incorporated Organisatlon regulated by the Charity Commission. The Trustees can confirm that they do not receive any remuneration for their se￿ice$ to the charity or expenses for acting as trustees. The Trustees can also confirm that they have complied wlth their duties to have due regard to the Charity Commission's public benefit guidance when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant. Other Costs There was no Trustee trip to Nepal last year, but this year the charity invested In Its in- country artivities, with two trips to visit a range of schools in two more remote areas of Western and South Western Nepal: Mugu and Bardiya. Since the trips were completed, Womens, Health training and computer room5 have been provided to some of these schools, as noted in the Trustees, Report. with further expenditure planned in the two areas. The total cost to the charity of Trustee trips to these areas during the year was £6,183: all of these costs were directly attributable to the charitws work in Nepal.
