AGM report 2024 In some respects. this is slightly more of a challenging AGM report for me to write, than previous years- I'll explain in due course. The comparison with the previous years would show many similarities: a busy church, busy with fund raising, with Warm Place. with the pastoral life of the church, and a church steadily gaining more and more respect in the community, where before this wasn't a giv- en. Undoubtedly the ministry of the Warm Place has very much helped with this, but its far from being the only ingredient. Community involvement is a drip feed and Is the result of many years of being present. Refreshingly, I stiii get accosted by teenagers on Lidl tills who sing assembly songs to me, or year 6's shouting at me acros5 the street- "oi, rev- sam!1• It probably means little to some. but a Baptist Union video of the 80's had a strap line, "where it matters, there you'll find usl" And that for me sums up what we are all about. Looking back at the pictures l tske and store (for these AGM moments), it seems incredi- ble that 2024 included what perhaps was our lowest moment: thieves braking into the church site on Easter Sunday evening and causing material destruction throughout the site. We believe our heightened prominence In the community had made us a target. Dis- covered by Winnie on Easter Monday (the flower cupboard had been completely thrown apart), thieves had smashed through our church hall door, gone into the church kitchen, smashing doors, through the halls smashing our brand new storage cupboards, up the stairs into the Shout room (more doors smashed) through the entire top floor rooms, breaking open doors and cupboards, across into the worship centre balcony and down in- to the church Offi zone where both offices were smashed and then the wedding register safe which they attempted to force, but failed. They got away with minor items of an AV nature from the Hub, and potentially some minor cash, though the damage caused proba- bly amounted to not less than £IOK. The leadership team and I came running, which was far more than Avon and Somerset Police did. who merely sent a forensic chap. The feeling we all had was gut wrenching, and numerous people from the community stepped up to repair and secure. The ramifications would roll on for many months, and Baptist Insurance frankly limped along and made use of a secondary organisation to assess the damage. They were not to make their insurance offer until September, the end of my first sabbati- cal, where on day l of my return I picked up the phone and got angry with Baptist Insur- ance. The upside was that our long desired new church hall door might now have funding. the downside was other extensive internal damage would remain left, a fact the Loss
Adjuster acknowledged. We took a decision in the aftermath of this to propose the instal- lation of an alarm and system, for which Baptist Insurance have been pleased to offer us a £12.50/a discount, but only after we pushed them! Both of these are now active and have brought a completely new dimension to church life, for which I will reserve my words on this occasion. In terms of our church makeup, this and the previous year has been about us realising just how much of an international gathering or community of people we are becoming. God has been generous in bringing to this church family Christians from many different cultures and communities around the world. In the past we have in essence been a market town predominantly British church. now we are made up of all kinds of international expres- sions, more than fifteen I think, different styles and spiritualities, and I'll be the first to rec- 08nise that we were slow to wake up to the consequences. So let me say here and now to those who have joined us, please forgive us where we have been slow to adapt. But adapt we have, and we still have some way to go. Interestingly, we have not been the only church in the South West Baptist Association to experience this. My monthly zoom meeting with other District Ministers from across the SW peninsula, has revealed other Similar experiences, notably in Truro, and sharing online with them on how we have need- ed to change has been a learning process. For us in WBC, some aspects of our worship have changed, but more needs to. We have also need to realise that the word "membership has extraordinary negative connotations in other cultures and at worst could be understood as scary or political, and at best exclusive. Undoubtedly, the most sad and traumatic moment for us all, was the sudden and desper- ately sad 'Promotion to Glorf of Norman Snell. We were deeply shaken by this unex- pected loss of this man of God, whose faith and example encouraged many, and whose voice was often heard in the Sunday prayers, expressing deep spiritual truths. His thanks- giving service filled the Worship Centre and the streamed recording of the service had, I think, the most number of viewings ever seen. Our prayers continue for Elaine. And so I then hit an unexpected exhaustion crash- washed out in all areas- a combina- tion of many things, I guess. The leadership team had been on at me for several years to take a long overdue Sabbatical, and at this point I needed to say to them - I need to do this1 It was greeted I think by those who had kept reminding me, with a Sense of relief. I am grateful to the church for allowing me to do this, and I decided that it wasn't going to be easy to take a straight 2 months, due to the schools work (harvest), remembrance and the Christmas season. So July and August was taken, and then I would go on to take a month in February 25. Thank you to all who stepped up and took responsibility in the 5un- day ministry and other significant areas.
So that's why it'5 a little difficult to write this report, this time around. There is a sense for me that my year was understandably incomplete, different, or just out of the ordinary. The year was a big challenge in terms of our fundraising. and much thanks needs to be given to Elaine for her tireless efforts in not giving up and continuing to push open nu- merous doors. Thanks to your generosity. and for turning out to support events and pro- vide donations towards our toilets project. We were about halfway at the conclusion of the year, towards our target. That was a significant effort. Shout took a big step fonmard this year by going to Satellites, and Carl and Sophie's mas- sive efforts to head off to the Bath and West Showground, into the unknown, with young people who themselves had never made such a venture, is to be applauded. Great bless- ings for them all and well done to everyone, and I'll not mention water bottles, sleeping bags, and large suitcases, but it was a highly significant undertaking. We also added new Deacons and Elders in 24, and they have been a superb group who have kept their fingers on the pulse. A big part of the year was then realising that as a church our emphasis on the Warm Place was making it harder for us a5 a church to fel- lowship together, as previously this would have been expressed in many producing some kind of food event on slte at WBC, which would be far from relaxing and very "samerf,. We needed more fun and fellowship, and so Connexion Events would be something that David would particularly oversee. I want to recognise and give thanks to all who have used their gifts and stepped up into key areas of ministry this year. PA and AV 2024 saw a change in the makeup of the team, and it gives me opportunity to recognise and give thanks for the work of Colin Strange and all that he gave to the key ministry, with such experience and faithf ulness in serving. Colin decided that he needed to lay down this ministry, and we miss his oversight in numerous ways. If there was any need of any sort, f or PA, Colin would be there, and a thorough job was always done. So we give thanks f or his years of service. The PA/AV desk and teams exist in a stressy world, and the key to every occasion is pre-preparation, not last mi- nute shocks. Communication ahead of every service or event, is what keeps team members happy, and slightly less stressed. Key parts of 24 has been the addition of a second sound desk, which is the mix- ing desk which sends the sound to our Youtube stream. This attempts to create as good sound as possible for steam listeners. It IS, in and of itself a big chal- len9e. We don't want to present a concert, but a ref lection of a congregational sound and singing - one that isn't just stage sound. This can only be monitored by listenin9 to the Youtube stream. In addition, and after what feels like numerous painf ul leaders, debate over "was it the screen or was it the projector?" We manage to get a prof essional perspective, and this Clted a lazer projector proposal. When Chris W saw the same projector massively reduced in a Black Fri- day sale, use of some bequest money meant this was a fantastic opportunity. We are now able to use the screen in daylight conditions. A goal of these two teams is surely to get as many of our young people involved in these teams, as their awareness of tech, is always way ahead of others. CONNECT UPDATE BELONGING In the autumn, I was invited to facilitate the gather- ing together of the folk in WBC in any ways that en- able us to meet and enjoy fellowship with one another. Rachel is also supporting me in this. These events are CONNECT events, and connecting is integral to pursuing Kingdom life and discipleship. We look to encourage one another whenever we are together. We all need that deep connec- tion and we are growing in our understanding that we all belong to one another as His family. No one should feel lonely, and no one left out. EVENTS The We launched our first CONNECT event in November with The Big Quiz Night raising money for TEAR FUND. QUÉZ Planned events for 2025 include a walk at Langford Common, a shared meal and ac- tivities at Sampford Peverell, a skittle match in Bradford on Tone, and a table tennis tour- nament at WBC. Along with a short walk at Milverton beginning with a light breakfast at The Coffee Mill, picnic and activities garden party, a return boat trip from Exmouth to Tor- quay, and an afternoon together on Exmouth beach. WORSHIPTEAM UPDATE I was glad when they said to me 'Let us go to the house of the Lord, We are a spiritual house, stones joined together, fitted together, in which God lives. Every person present is an important component in His house. Every person present is an offering of worship. Every voice in every song, every petition made. and each scripture shared, and message that is preached, and every welcome at the door, is a sacrifice of praise. is always special to have a team who desire to usher the people into His pres- ence. This presence we carry with us everywhere, but when we gather there is an amplification of that, as together we join in worship. We have been very blessed with a greater involvement from our African members. who bring so much to us in the freedom and exuberance of their worship. Also, we have had our younger members regularly helping us lead with singing and scripture reading for which we will continue to pray and look for an increase. Ara Akande has been receiving drum tuition, and we have all witnessed the fruit of that hard work, week after week. .es, I was glad when they said to me 'Let us go to the house of the Lord, May HIS GLORY fill His house. Ladies Fellowship 2024 Report We continued to meet monthLy as the Ladies, Fellowship for prayer. study. and encouragement. We have been studying Face to Face by Jen Baker, which explores life lessons from Moses'journey with God. The ladies seem to enjoythe studies, and we have had from 4-10 women at each session. We prayfor one another which helps us get to know each other on a deeper level and unite us. We also have a what's app group which helps us stay in touch in between meetings with about 28 on the roster. We met in February, March, and April, continuing our study of Moses in Face to Face. We held a Ladies Breakfast in the spring on a Saturd8y orning so more Ladies could fellowship together in the church hall. We played a'get to knowyou, Bingo-type fiLI-in game so everyone could move around and meet some new people. Cindy gave a short talk on some truths she'd been learningfrom the Face to Face Bible study. Elaine and Sue helped plan, shop for, and caterthe breakfast, which was croissants, fruit. yogurt, juices. tea. and coffee. We charge a small fee to cover costs. In the summer Ni hosted a barbecue with about 12 ladies at her house. People brought food to share. and we had a great time of fellowship. In Decemberwe booked a Saturdaytea at the Beambridge with 10 of us enjoyed a festive celebration. Sue Strange is stepping down as co-leader as she is movingto another church. so we will prayfor more women to move into leadership of the group. House Groups Our house group has continued to meet re8u13rly on a Wednesday evening. During the year we spent some time looking at the Book of Ruth and the Letter to the Romans. Judith Bosier and Richard joined our group, which met at Roger and Janet Morris, house. Sadly, we lost Richard, Colin and Sue when the 2 families left WBC. Due to increased family commitments, Janet and Roger asked if someone else could host the meeting. Winnie and l agreed to do so from the new year. Devin Abrahams The house group hosted by the Fletchers each Wednesday evening, has seen significant numerical growth over the last year. The attendance has grown from 5 or 6 each week to averaging around 10 attendees each week now. We have studied Romans, Radical Believers and The Bible Course. Andrew Fletcher
