Looking back into'23, it seems like WBC has had is fair share of moments when we bal- anced sadness with trusting in God. To have so many losses is challenging. and these have been somewhat extraordinary for the life of a church: Lloyd Jefferies, Muriel Lewis, Gordon Woodbury, Mary Rowsell, Pat Wilson. We remember them and give thanks for their lives. Certainly, the amount of loss and bereavement that we experienced in '23 was nonetheless exceptional and affects us all. That said. I think that if the slightly bigger picture is reflected upon since Covid and lock- down, then it may be said that we are not unlike other churches in digging in and some- times literally "hanging in there!11 Often pondered through the year by me, was the con- cern that on numerous occasions our ministries were stretched to the point that at any moment, our ongoing church life could somehow fall in on itself. All it would take would be one or two people to disconnect, and then .... I give thanks and pay tribute to you all for your efforts. For those who were willing to stand in the gap and hold firm. There are many of you. There is another strand which jumps out from the year, which is the extraordinary num- ber of different nationalities that have found themselves integrating into the life of the church, which is a direct result of local care companies seeking to staff and employ local care infrastructures. It has been a delight to welcome so many different people into regu- lar worship, get to know them and adjust and integrate them into the family of WBC. This has had its challenges, and the steep learning curve of remembering new names has. at least for me, been a lesson in mental file saving to the hard disk of my head. This was the year that we basically said "enough was enough" in regard to our church hall toilets. I pay tribute to Elaine who willingly took up the mantle of Fund-Raising Coor- dinator and, whilst the toilets were only one item of many I handed to her for the shop- ping list, she hit the ground running and has produced numerou5 miracles. Mission wise: we saw significant change in our Baptist World Mission makeup, and we saw a number of the overseas personnel drop into see us. Our Street Café was amazing in the way it raised funds for Guinebor.
The Warm Place, a year in seemed to mature and yet also saw its own challenges. not least when we moved once again into Winter Mode, and despite the best of efforts and plan- ning, I saw the staffing strategy I had worked hard to formulate, just disappear into the Re- cycle Bin in 24 hours. We celebrated the seasons of the Christian Year and saw a number of local schools visit our site to be a part of those moments. The full worship cen- tres from Wellesley Park and Beech Grove schools were delightful. and of course the fund-raising concert in Ad- vent for our toilets fund was memorable. We also saw the Baptismal pool open, and the Gospel was preached throughout the year. Both our Allsorts and Shout Minis- tries saw revival in numbers, and we should be excep- tionally grateful for all the efforts that go in to make those ministries fruitful. I hope we actively pray for eve- ry child and young person in those groups. that they find Christ and go on with Him. ¢Y.> So. Our bookings during the week consisted of Majorettes, Samba Band. trainin9 days for Seea- bility, and several one-off bookings including fundraisers for Wellington Hospi- tal League of Friends and Reminiscence Learning. Our upstairs off ices are f u1- ly occupied too: all this generating much needed income. Sally Perry continued to work with me in the off ice. helping Out and covering where necessary. Also she continued to cycle around Wellin9ton delivering church mail, saving us on postage. I tried to prepare a "day in the life of the administrator. but as no 2 days are the same it was diff icult to do. I know that if I have a plan of what I want to achieve on a particular day it is unlikely to happen due to something else coming up so I have a list and if I get to it I do. if not never mind!!!

STREET MARKET CAFE MINISTRY We were blessed with the Street Market Cafe for two seasons, with WBC called to do something to open doors after Covid. It was announced a street market was preparing to open up on South Street. an opportunity and a space to engage, to serve the community and church family. We served refreshments, cake, scones with jam and cream, tea cakes, all made by a team of cake makers, raising money for Guinebor hospital in Chad i4Ve had a free craft activity every month, puzzle and board games, an oc- casional guest. We had wool spinning, music at Christmas. Some ideas came from Renew Wellbeing. We started our day at 8.30am once a month on a Saturday morning. Ta- bles were set up the night before. We took time to come together at 9.30am for prayer before opening the doors at 10.00am finishing at 12.30pm. There were rumbles of the Street Market moving to the High Street so we prayed and talked about what this would look like for the Café. In the meantime with a new wave of need due to energy crises, the warm place was born. All hands were on deck and lots of energy was required from people. They were feeling stretched and life was taking different turns so we made a decision that the Cafe had its season. We give thanks for a wonderful team of people who stepped up and com- mitted to this time of calling and building. Janet Morris
Activities at The Street Cafe
Shout re ort 2023 shout wbc Shout is our youth provision for young people 11-19. We enjoyed a year of growth in 2023. Our numbers have increased as we wel- comed new folk to WBC, though we are seeing less of our older members as they have work and College commitments. We have used the Youth for Christ, material in our Sunday morn- ing sessions, these involve games and bible study and prayer. We have completed the following series- 'Grow Deeperf- looking at important qualities in our relationships 'Be Generou5' looking at how we can best use our time, gifts and money 'Life hacks' looking at topics such as peace. forgiveness, attitude and resisting. These have been interspersed with stand alone sessions on differ- ent stories from the bible and how we can be 'difference makers,. We have also enjoyed some evenings together throughout the year. We've had fi'lm nights, barbecues and swimming, games night and a few of us went to Pursuit in Taunton. The year ended with a Christmas party- this time in the church hall with games and pizza and lots of fun! Thanks to all who have helped with Shout this last year- Cindy. Maintenance This is always an ongoing situation with many minor repairs required during the year. We try to do as much as we can in-house so thank you to those who have turned up to our 2 maintenance days to help with maintenance and cleaning. During the last year, however, we have undertaken two or three major projects. The porch over the church entrance has been the source of leaks f or a considerable time and it has been diff icult to pinpoint where the water was coming in so we decided to replace the entire roof covering. The fact that the original coverin9 was lead and as it is a 9rade II listed buildin9, we f elt we needed to replace with the same material and lead is not cheap. Our roof ing contractor did a superb job in replacing the lead and also covered the windows above the porch roof with acrylic. Following this the porch itself received some much needed woodwork repairs and a coat of paint. One of the rooms on the top f loor of the hall was treated to a new window as the one in there was in danger of falling out! Over time it is anticipated that all the windows upstairs will be replaced. We also had some storage cupboards built in the f ire exit porch which has enabled Allsorts to store all their equipment downstairs, and the Warm Place can also keep their extra bits and pieces close by. Time was also spent in looking over plans for new toilets to replace the ones downstairs in the hall. This has taken sometime to reach a conclusion but we are nearly there with that: all we need now is the f inance to do it and Elaine Snell has been and still is hard at work trying to get grants, etc. to be able to proceed with this much needed improvement to our facilities. Ladles, Fellowship 2023 Report We continued to meet monthly as the ladies, fellowship for prayer, study and encour- agement. We have been studying Face to Face by Jen Baker. which explore5 life lessons from Moses, journey with god. The ladies seem to enjoy the studies, and we have had from 4-10 women at each session. We pray for one another which helps us get to know each other on a deeper level and unite us. We also have a What's App group which helps us stay in touch in between meetings with about 28 in the group. In July we held a barbecue with 12 ladies at the Fletcher's house, with Andrew grilling for us. People brought food to share, and we had a great time of fellowship. In Decem- ber we had our annual Christmas dinner at the Fletcher's, catered by STC Catering. It was a lovely evening that united us and allowed us to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Going forward we plan to have a ladies, breakfast on a Saturday morning to enable more women to participate. Cindy Fletcher and Sue Strange
COFFEE MINISTRY Techy Stuf f PA, Projection and Camera are all continuing to do what they do. We have been looking at an upgrade for the projector to produce a brighter image so that we may be able to raise the blinds at the f ront and produce a brighter interior f or the wor- ship centre. Software has been updated too to make it easier to operate. Colin Strange We are blessed to have our coffee team of two each week who arrive at 9.30am to prepare a brew ready for when morning service ends. They take some time to chat and share. and there is always a cup available to f ill with ref reshment. Janet Morris Welcome Ministry We give thanks for our welcome team who turn up with a smile and a will- ing heart. We aim for three on team f or a Sundoy morning. Wlth two peo- ple who prepare coffee f irst, then join another person arriving at 10 am to greet people coming through our doors. Occasionally we are called to help with other events in the church calen- dar. We welcome anyone who would like to join coff ee or welcome ministries; an opportunity to grow. 9reet and serve our church family, people are not always available and have different seasons of availability. WORSHIP TEAM 2023 It continues to be a joy and a blessing to lead worship at WBC. It has been encouraging to see an increase in folk participating in the worship team throughout the year. IJ Also, it has been a pleasure to frequently in- volve some of Allsorts in presenting Songs and we look forward to seeing them grow in confidence in worship leading. Jljc Now that our studio at Venn Cross has been completed, we have begun to meet to explore new songs with the team. Senior Fellowship Report 2023 We started 2023 with some sad news-the passing of Mary. She loved comin8 to our coffee mornings and is much missed. Dotjoined our group for a few months but has been very unwell since July and unable to attend. I visit her regularly to stay in touch. Betty has been able to come out of Wel- lington House and join in too. We continue to meet every 2/3 weeks at either Gladys, or Eileen's home for coffee and tasty treats. We celebrate birthdays with cake of course! Highlights have been: Coffee/lunch and Christmas lunch at Warm Place Sharing Communion together on Maundy Thursday Fundraising events: Afternoon Tea and Christmas Dinner hosted by Elaine and Nor- man Special Event:_ Phyllis's IOOth birthday Afternoon Tea at the Old Well. The Senior Fellowship is a group of elderly people brought together by me and not a church run organisation. It is open to those from other churches and guests so please let me know if you would like to be in- cluded. Getting to our meetings is the biggest challenge with all our mobility issues but we've managed so far! Sue Strange

Flower Ministry Thank you to everyone who provides and arranges flowers in the worship centre every week. and also for occasions such as Easter and harvest. These are then delivered to someone in the church family who is celebrating a birthday or anniversary or just to let them know we are thinking of them. If you want to be part of the flower team. there are several ways to do this:_ Provide flowers or donate money for flowers. You can arrange these yourself or a member of the team can do it. You can choose a date yourself to mark an anniversary or birthday or in remembrance of a loved one. You can go on the rota to arrange flowers donated by Someone else. If you want to be a part of the team, please speak to Dorothy Smith.
Annual Report: Allsorts Children's Ministry To The Esteemed Members of Wellington Baptist Church, Warm Greetings, As we reflect on the progress and achievements of Allsorts Children's Ministry in the year 2023, it is with great joy and gratitude that we present this annual report. Under the guidance of Proverbs 22.6 {NIV), "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it," we have strived to nurture and support the young ones in our church community. Allsorts remains a place of excitement and learning, catering to an average of 10 to 15 children throughout the year. Despite the challenges we faced, the dedication and commitment of our team have ensured that the ministry continues to thrive and grow. In line with our mission to provide a solid foundation for our children, we are currently im- plementing the Urban Saints Energise 3-year school plan. This year marks our pro- gress into year two of the plan, where we focus on further enriching the spiritual and personal development of our young members. Through a combination of engaging activities, Bible teachings, and fellowship, we aim to instill values and beliefs that will guide them throughout their lives. Key Highlights of 2023 and plans moving in to 2024: l. Expansion of Outreach Programmes: Allsorts has actively engaged with the local community through various outreach initiatives, fostering connections and spreading the message of love and faith. 2. Interactive Learning Sessions: Our team has introduced innovative and interactive learning sessions that cater to the diverse needs and interests of the children. mak- ing each gathering a memorable and enriching experience. 3. Strengthened Team Collaboration- The dedicated efforts of our volunteers and staff have enhanced the quality of our prograrns and events, showcasing a strong sense of unity and teamwork.
Looking Ahead: As we move forward into the coming year, we are filled with anticipation and hope for the continued growth and impact of Allsorts Children's Ministry. Our commitment to nurturing the young minds and hearts entrusted to us remains steadfast. guided by the princi- ples of faith and compassion. In conclusion, we extend our heartfelt thanks to each member of Wellington Baptist Church for your unwaver- ing support and encouragement. Ben Sellick Allsorts Children's Ministry Meeting Point Meeting Point was the idea of Elsie Howell and Paul Cottrell. Paul used to bring to church a man with learning difficulties from Drakes Place Residential Home. Their idea was to establish a club for disabled people where we could share God's love and give them an opportunity to take part in worship. Elsie would invite the Group to take part in services and to perform Bible related drama. We also brought them to the annual Carol service by candlelight which we continued to do unto a few years ago. As well as Paul and Elsie, early team members in- cluded Bill and Nicky, Dot, Josephine, Carol. Marjorie, and Hugh and Ann. In the early days we had the use of Drakes Place's minibus and took the members on trips to Exmouth, Sidmouth folk festival, 10 Pin bowling, we also went to Bradfields Farm and the Monument blackcurrant field5 for Barbecue5. Some of the group were a150 brought to the Church weekend away in Exmouth.
Over the course of time the helpers took part in course5 including administering Diazapam, Somerset Totsl Communication and a study day orgainised by Livability {who we are affiliated to) in Taunton to raise awareness of people with learning difficulties and disabilities. Music and worship is a big part of Meeting Point and we have been blessed to have a succes- sion of great musicians who have played foT our singing sessions at the end of the session. These included John Troake, Dot Webb, Pat Wilson and Sue Strange. At the end of the year we have always held a Christmas Party with food and entertainment provided by David White. We have also had at least one barn dance each year. We have had many volunteer helpers over the years and there isn't room to include all of them here {apologies to those I have missed out}. Special mention must be made of the young people from Wellington, Court Fields, Beech Grove and Rockwell Green schools who helped at the club as part of their community service or DOE awards. Unfortunately, this year many of our current helpers have had to stand down due to health issues. When Covid occurred we locked down immediately and we did not restart until the end of 2022. We have only met once a month Sin then and we were attempting to increase that to twice a month but circumstsnces have conspired to foil these attempts. Sadly we must close down completely now.
