COVENTRY PRIDE 2020 – ANNUAL REPORT – INTERIM CHAIR

2020 has been an exceptional year for many reasons, because of the impacts of the global pandemic.

Special thanks must go to the remaining and previous Trustee members who collaborated, contributed, and championed our first ever online Pride, kindly hosted by the team at the Yard, Coventry. To deliver an inspirational event during such challenging conditions is no mean feat and should be recognised as such.

Impacts resulting from the global civil rights movement, Black Lives Matter, had a severe impact on the Board. Several Board members felt that there was conflict between the Pride mission and the BLM vision; others disagreed.

The result is a much smaller Board, focused on working together to rebuild Pride from the ground up.

Another result of these Board of Trustees ‘movements’ was the resignation of the previous Chair, Martin Pink, due to personal reasons. An interim Chair, the current Vice-Chair, was appointed as an emergency measure; it was agreed that the position of Chair would be made available for any Board members to apply for at this year’s AGM.

As Interim Chair, I would like to thank all Board members, existing and those who have left / stepped down. We may not have always agreed with each other, however, each member was passionate about the progression of equality for the LGBTQ+ community.

I can confirm that I will not be standing for the permanent role of Chair of Coventry Pride; I do not feel that, given the current situation and climate, especially when the demographics of Coventry are taken into consideration, that I am the best person to represent the views and requirements of the LGBTQ+ population.

It is extremely difficult to visualise any future at the moment, that does not reflect our current situation… however, I hope that we will continue to work together to not only deliver for the LGBTQ+ community, but to also educate and engage our wider communities. We will plan for Pride, and hope that we will meet again for the event, as opposed to meeting digitally as we had to this year.

Thank you all for your support, candour, and passion. You are Pride and I am proud to know you all.

Nyasha Pitt Interim Chair
