## **The Parish Church of St Barnabas, Southfields**

## **Annual Report 2021**

St Barnabas Parochial Church Council (PCC) has the responsibility of cooperating with the incumbent, the Reverend Ian Tattum, in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The PCC is also specifically responsible for the maintenance of the Church and the Church Hall complex adjacent to the Church.

## **Objectives and Activities**

The PCC is committed to sustaining the liberal catholic tradition and ethos of the parish and maintaining a pattern of services rooted in Eucharistic worship, but in an open way which welcomes as many people as possible to worship at our church and to become part of the church community at St Barnabas. The PCC reviews our services regularly. When planning our activities for the year, we have sought to follow the principles in the Commission's guidance on public benefit and, in particular, the supplementary guidance

on charities for the advancement of religion. In particular, we try to enable ordinary people to live out their faith as part of our parish community through:

- Liturgy and prayer; learning about the Christian faith; and developing their knowledge and trust in Jesus Christ

- Provision of pastoral care for people living in the parish.

- Through opening the church up to the community by sharing our facilities with as many groups as possible as a sign of the Kingdom of God.

To facilitate this work it is important that we maintain the fabric of the Church of St Barnabas and the adjacent halls.

## **Achievements and Performance:**

## **Worship and Prayer**

During 2021 we sustained our pattern of a 9 am said Common Worship Eucharist followed by a 10.30 am Choral Eucharist and at least two other services during the week, where possible.

Our Sunday School was planned to start again as soon as possible.

Like most churches we developed online services during the pandemic and are intending to continue with a mixed liturgical culture in the future.

We became more flexible in our baptism practice during the pandemic and held a number after the main morning service or in the afternoon. !6 were conducted during the year . Three funeral services were held at St Barnabas and eight were conducted elsewhere. One wedding was conducted.

We continue to benefit from the ministry of Joy Boyce, who continues to help us regularly now that she is no longer licensed to the parish but has permission to officiate. Other people in the congregation have also helped with leading worship in the last year and a thorough review is taking place concerning what we offer in the light of new circumstances.

Greg Skidmore, Director of Music, has continued to help us with choral music and develop a programme of regular services of compline. Sandy May is now our lead organist, and he is ably supported by Robert Stewart and others.

## **Deanery Synod**

Only one member of the PCC sits on the Deanery Synod at the moment and we are very conscious that we need more representation. This provides the PCC with an important link between the parish and the wider structures of the church. During the year there was plenty of deanery wide cooperation on Mission- especially focussing on Eco-Church and Living in Love and Faith. Our vicar Ian continues in post as Area Dean, and has been taking a lead in supporting a neighbouring parish through a vacancy caused by retirement.

**The Church**

In a normal year we have had many concerts (classical and contemporary) and numerous school visits - from Riversdale Primary School, St Cecilia’s Church of England Academy and Southfields Academy. All such activities continued to be greatly curtailed by Covid 19, but the church still managed to host a few concerts, by the Ismena Collective, Wandsworth Symphony Orchestra and a few visiting concert pianists. We have maintained a store for a mini Foodbank which was there to help local families when looked for. The church itself was a vaccination hub throughout the year up until mid November, when it closed. During the year the church replaced its Victorian era piano with a refurbished modern version to allow for more musical events.

## **The Church Garden**

This continues to be maintained by a small team. David Mcollum has now retired after a decade of service and Martin Whittaker has taken over so that it continues to provide a space for leisure and a haven for wild-life. It was used by the wider community for the annual Southfields Harvest event in the autumn.

## **The Church Halls**

During the week throughout 2021 our four halls were used by a number of groups, whenever it was permitted, and with appropriate restrictions following health and safety advice for Covid.

Southfields Ballet, NCT, Cygnet Players, Little Kickers, Monkey Music, various fitness groups, Southfields Grid Residents Association, Tiny Tunes, Baby Bounce, Perform, Sing and Sign, Teddy Tennis, Me-Spot Pilates, Bruno Groning Circle of Friends, Yogima, Your Time Pilates, Macmillan Move More, Vital Pilates, Keep on Moving, Busy Lizzy have been regular users. Church members ran drop in events weekly for senior citizens. We seek to maintain all our facilities in a good state of repair so that they can be a long term community asset.

## **Our Church Office**

This is run by Claire Fox, who is in the office for 14 hours per week and also now manages our halls. She is supported by Krista Ovist, in a voluntary capacity.

## **Pastoral care**

Some members of our parish are unable to attend church due to sickness or age. Reverend Ian Tattum takes communion at home to those who request it and some lay members of the church do regular home visiting to the housebound. Under Covid 19 we have kept in touch with those who are housebound or have been isolating with regular newsletters and phone calls. The Monday Club for senior citizens operated whenever it was safe to do sosometimes using the church garden.

**Mission and Evangelism**

We supported a number of charities and have a strong presence in the community through active participation in community life and a vibrant web-site and use of Twitter. We have supported Wandsworth and Earlsfield Foodbanks, The Ace of Clubs, Ibba Girls’ School in South Sudan and Christian Aid . This year we did not host the Glass-Door project by hosting guests who are homeless due to council restrictions imposed because of Covid. Immediately the lockdown came into effect The vicar, Ian Tattum, continued as Chair of Governors at Riversdale School, stepped down as Director of the Nicholas Stewart Project, but remained a member of the Independent Advisory Committee to the Metropolitan Police in Wandsworth.

## **Ecumenical Relationships**

These have been greatly weakened by the Covid pandemic and there has been little activity in this area as the church seeks to get back on its feet.

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

The Parochial Church Council is a corporate body established by the Church of England. The PCC operates under the Parochial Church Council Powers Measure. The PCC is a Registered Charity.

The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. At St Barnabas the membership of the PCC consists of the Vicar, churchwardens, the reader, our honorary curate and members elected by those members of the congregation who are on the electoral roll of the church. All members of the congregation are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and participate fully in the life of the parish. The PCC members are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance to the parish including deciding on how the funds of the PCC are to be spent. New members receive initial training into the workings of the PCC. The full PCC met six times during the year with an average level of attendance of 8.

St Barnabas Church Southfields
Report and accounts
For the year ended 31 December 2021

Finanaal review
The covid-19 crisis continued to have a material impact on St Bamabas, operational results
during the year.
Total income for the year at £Y2,953 showed a £22.963 (33%) recovery from 2020, but was
stiLI £16.179 down on 2019. mainly due to continued depressed halls income and lack of
opportunity for fundraising projects.
Total expenditure for the year of £94,tV34 was down £2.186 on prior year. as 2020
included a £45(KJ expendiknre on a youth project funded by the Nicholas Stewart Trust. This
was partially offset by higher music expenses. as the church rfropened and its acttve music
programme recommen￿.
The church hall generated a profit of £27,7(YJ (2020: £7572). still £3.752 below 2019, as hall
usage was still restricted in 2020. Rental income during 2021 greatly benefited from the use
of the hall as an NHS vaccination centre.
St Barnabas has recorded a total defiat of a,141 (2020: £26,291 deficit). However, this was
only achieved by reducing the diocesan contribution to £45.(X)O for the year, vs £68,0(Ml in
2019. In 2021 we aim to increase our contribution to £4,OtKi peT month, keeping this amount
under review. so that we may increa* it to earlier leve]s. if our income further recovers.
The balance sheet at 31 December 2021 shows net assets of £44,885 (2020: Q6.026). The
reduction relates mainly to a slight increase in creditors. being deposits held for hall
bookings.
The PCC'S reserves have been divided into restricted funds, where income has been
donated, granted or raised explicitly for a specifjc purpx)se, and desisnated funds, which can
be used for a particular purpose. and an unrestricted general fund available for the general
purposes of the PCC. Total restricted fi￿d5 at 31 December 2021 amounted to £8,389 (2020:
£13,834), mainly due to the transfer of the Margarita Venn fLmeral fund to the general fund.
We are very grateful to Margarita for her senerosity. Total designated fimds fell by £1,879,
mainly due to the use of the Fabric fund for repairs and Maintenan￿ of the thurth fabric
and equipment, partially offset by a contribution by the di0￿Se of Southwark to the
Area Dean fund. The general fund rose by £6,183 as halls income recovered, although it
remains well below our tar8et level of £18.(KK).
We are cautiously OPtimistic about a gradual ￿Mption of nornial activity in 2022,
allowing us to rebuild the general fund and to increase our contribution to the diocese.
