Making Waves: Charity number 1163912
The aims of the Making Waves charity are to support people with learning difficulties and/or physical difficulties living in West Yorkshire to help them lead full and purposeful lives in their communities. It primarily helps those who attend the Waves Day Care Centre in Slaithwaite.
The trustees receive donations, consider applications and provide support where it’s deemed appropriate. The charity has no fixed costs, running costs or expenditure to which it is committed in advance.
Money for the charity comes from fundraising organised mainly by staff from the Waves Day Care Centre, Waves members, their families and friends along with anyone else who wants to help the charity. Charitable income also comes from donations from individuals and businesses.
The charity has a JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/making-wavesjg where people can donate cash or can donate by cheque made payable to Making Waves at the Waves Day Care Centre. The money raised helps people with learning and/or physical difficulties lead full lives by helping them to meet the costs of:

Holidays, short breaks and social activities.

Day care placements and therapy.

Respite care and overnight breaks at short notice when their families are in crisis.

Equipment for the use of members at Waves Day Care Centre.

Any other way the charity trustees deem important to help improve the lives of people with learning difficulties and/or physical difficulties.

The trustees are Andrew Hirst as chairman, Vincent Wadsworth as treasurer, Michael Nolan as secretary and trustee Angela Skelton, who works at Waves and represents the day centre on the committee.
The charity had a phenomenal fundraising year ending October 31, 2024, predominantly helped by all money from an autobiography going to the charity and this continued through Christmas 2024 and into 2025.
Making Waves chairman Andrew Hirst was the ghost writer for Ahead Of The Curve, the autobiography of Yorkshire entrepreneur and philanthropist Graham Leslie. Graham visited the Waves day centre and was so impressed by what he saw that he decided any money raised by the book through sales and sponsorship should go to the charity and it has brought in an estimated £18,000 by October 31, 2024.
This was particularly boosted by two book signings Graham did in December 2024 – one at the Waves Christmas Fayre and the other at a Huddersfield Town football match. Graham was the Huddersfield Town chairman in the early 1990s and is well respected by many supporters. The combined total from the two book signings from books bought was £890.
It’s difficult to give an exact total the autobiography has brought in for Making Waves as significant amounts have been donated anonymously through JustGiving and it’s impossible to know which donations came from the book and which came from general anonymous donations.
Waves continues to hold three fundraising fayres each year in spring, summer and Christmas – the spring fayre alone raised £512 - and people continue to kindly donate to the Making Waves charity. One of the most notable was 100-year-old Huddersfield artist Vera Drake with a combined total of £242 donated in her memory and from her funeral in August 2025.
One of the largest donations came in November 2025 for £500 from The Gripple Foundation, the charitable side for Gripple, a 100% employee-owned manufacturing company based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.
Making Waves has helped three members over the 12 months this report covers with emergency respite breaks for their carer or holidays they would otherwise have been unable to afford. The three sums donated were £1,772.42; 1,577.46 and £3,060.
The trustees have decided they would like to maintain at least £2,000 in the Making Waves account to cover for emergency requests for help and at the end of October 2025 the account had £25,167 in it which are all unrestricted funds.
