Trustees annual report for year ending October 31, 2024
Making Waves: Charity number 1163912
The aims of the Making Waves charity are to support people with learning difficulties and/or physical difficulties living in West Yorkshire to help them lead full and purposeful lives in their communities. It primarily helps those who attend the Waves Day Care Centre in Slaithwaite.
The trustees receive donations, consider applications and provide support where it’s deemed appropriate. The charity has no fixed costs, running costs or expenditure to which it is committed in advance.
Money for the charity comes from fundraising organised mainly by staff from the Waves Day Care Centre, Waves members, their families and friends along with anyone else who wants to help the charity. Charitable income also comes from donations from individuals and businesses.
The charity has a JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/making-wavesjg where people can donate cash or cheques made payable to Making Waves at the Waves Day Care Centre. The money raised helps people with learning and/or physical difficulties lead full lives by helping them to meet the costs of:
-
Holidays, short breaks and social activities.
-
Day care placements and therapy.
-
Respite care and overnight breaks at short notice when their families are in crisis.
-
Equipment for the use of members at Waves Day Care Centre.
-
Any other way the charity trustees deem important to help improve the lives of people with learning difficulties and/or physical difficulties.
People can apply for help either through Waves Day Care Centre who will submit the application to Making Waves on their behalf or by emailing chairman of trustees Andrew Hirst at andyjhirst@aol.com
The trustees are Andrew Hirst as chairman, Vincent Wadsworth as treasurer, Michael Nolan as secretary and trustee Angela Skelton, who works at Waves and represents the day centre on the committee.
The charity has had a phenomenal fundraising year ending October 31, 2024, predominantly helped by all money from an autobiography going to the charity.
Making Waves chairman Andrew Hirst was the ghost writer for Ahead Of The Curve, the autobiography of Yorkshire entrepreneur and philanthropist Graham Leslie. Graham visited the Waves day centre and was so impressed by what he saw that he decided any money raised by the book through sales and sponsorship should go to the charity and it has brought in around £15,000 by October 31, 2024, with more to come.
The other major donor was tax specialists Grant Thornton UK LLP which raised around £1,700 with a northern area quiz. This was organised by a Waves member’s sister who works for Grant Thornton.
The Waves spring fair 2024 brought in £400 and the summer fair 2024 reaped £607. A family skydive by the Monkman family led to a £140 donation.
Money also came from general donations via the Making Waves Just Giving page.
Making Waves has significantly helped one members during the year with an emergency respite break amounting to £1,500.
Making Waves also bought a portable hoist for £2,559 which Waves will be able to use when taking members on holidays and respite breaks.
The trustees have decided they would like to maintain at least £2,000 in the Making Waves account to cover for emergency requests for help and at the end of October 2024 the account had £24,607 in it in unrestricted funds.
