Annual report for year ending October 31, 2023

Making Waves: Charity number 1163912

The aims of the Making Waves charity are to support people with learning difficulties and/or physical difficulties living in West Yorkshire to help them lead full and purposeful lives in their communities. It primarily helps those who attend the Waves Day Care Centre in Slaithwaite.

The trustees receive donations, consider applications and provide support where it is deemed appropriate. The charity has no fixed costs, running costs or expenditure to which it is committed in advance.

Money for the charity comes from fundraising organised mainly by staff from the Waves Day Care Centre, Waves members, their families and friends along with anyone else who wants to help the charity. Charitable income also comes from donations from individuals and businesses.

The charity has a JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/making-wavesjg where people can donate cash or cheques made payable to Making Waves at the Waves Day Care Centre. The money raised helps people with learning and/or physical difficulties lead full lives by helping them to meet the costs of:

People can apply for help either through Waves Day Care Centre who will submit the application to Making Waves on their behalf or by emailing chairman of trustees Andrew Hirst at andyjhirst@aol.com

The trustees are Andrew Hirst as chairman, Vincent Wadsworth as treasurer, Michael Nolan as secretary and trustee Angela Skelton. Sarah Lockwood resigned as trustee during the year.

Making Waves has significantly helped 3 members during the year with emergency respite breaks amounting to £5,855.

Making Waves received £775 in November 2022 from the Duke of York’s Initiative distribution of residual funds when it was wound up. The charity had previously won a Duke of York Community Initiative Award. The money left was shared between all those charities and community groups which had received an award.

The largest donation into Making Waves during the year came from Holmfirth WRVS Club for Over 60s in May 2023 and totalled £2,885.86.

Money also came from general donations via the Making Waves Just Giving page.

The trustees have decided they would like to maintain at least £2,000 in the Making Waves account to cover for emergency requests for help and at the end of October 2023 the account had £6,237 in it.
