## Chair of Trustees' Report

**We chose our name carefully. River Holme Connections focuses on our rivers and streams but it’s the connections that are so important.**

A river is a connected corridor - there are 55km of them in this small subcatchment – and some of the few, natural corridors left in our urban environments. This is great for both wildlife and people of all ages.

In my first year as Chair of this wonderful charity, I can look back both at progress and consolidation.

We have improved footpaths and seating over the years and helped to connect people with nature. What has been particularly special has been the engagement; the connections with many different communities, volunteers, supporters, and the wonderful team who join it all up.

This year we said farewell to a number of trustees who helped to establish the charity as a sustainable venture. Those first years transforming a good idea into the warm and impactful entity it has now become were very demanding. We owe a great debt of thanks to Adrian Barraclough, Mike Williams, Clare Ash and Richard Ashley, for their time, enthusiasm, knowledge and expertise.

I grew up on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales between the limestone Pennines and the Trough of Bowland moorlands.

Nature was part of our daily lives with hedgerows full of flowers and birds. The sound of the birdsong changing from the moors to the

river, the meadows to the limestone peaks. Village life followed the seasons with many activities and traditions enhanced by the small farms. Hedge laying, lambing, hay making, autumn livestock sales and the local agricultural shows were all part of the village calendar. That was 50 years ago. The State of Nature 2019 report showed how nature in this country has fared since 1970. The headlines have been well publicised, including reports that over 40% of all our species have seriously decreased in numbers.

The importance of nature to our wellbeing is also becoming better understood.

River Holme Connections was established in 2015 to do something about this. It works in an area covering 100 sq km, embracing the northern edge of the Peak Park and into Huddersfield. The area, through urbanisation and industrialisation, has been affected by many of the pressures which have influenced that decline in nature, including pollution, woodland management, hydrological changes and the loss of wetland habitats, as well as the spread of invasive non-native species.

In 2022 we partnered with the South Pennine Park, The University of Huddersfield and The Palladium Group to develop a project to create ‘nature rich’ corridors over 28 sq km. This river focused landscape conservation project - Nature’s Holme - will enable us to restore certain ecosystems. It promises to provide us with a road map to transform the area, including:

## Chair Lynva Russell

- A feasibility study to improve fish migration and investigate nine man-made weirs.

- Support farmers and landowners with hedgerow and tree planting to improve water quality, create wildlife corridors, keep rivers cool through shade and slow the flow of water.

- Create wildflower meadows and partnership work to continue peatland restoration and to help sphagnum moss and other moorland plants grow. Create natural flood management - ponds, ditches and wetlands - to slow water flow downstream, improve biodiversity and trap sediment.

A highlight of 2022 was the successful release of water voles; one of the fastest declining mammals in the country. Our volunteers, led by Year in Industry student Tasha Houghton, have identified other suitable areas. The Nature’s Holme project will enable us to make these areas home again to the water vole. Everyone from my generation will remember many of these things. We now have the opportunity to make a difference for the next.

## Executive Summary

**We were delighted to end 2022 with a successful fundraising bid for a project to create nature rich corridors along nearly 22km of River Holme and its tributaries.**

It means 2023 will see us working closely with project partners - South Pennines Park, Palladium, the Environment Agency, the University of Huddersfield, landowners and farmers - to revive endangered species in our catchment.

The two-year 'Nature's Holme' project is just one of 22 across the country to receive government funding through the Landscape Recovery Scheme. It is backed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

The scheme will see us working closely with farmers and landowners to deliver a wide range of environmental benefits, including improved soils, flood alleviation and water retention, as well as increasing

biodiversity, carbon storage and improved water quality.

We aim to achieve this by creating new woodlands and hedgerows, restoring peatland, buffer strips, hay meadows, ponds, and addressing barriers to fish migration. We will also work to conserve two rare species - the white clawed crayfish and the water vole.

We achieved a great deal in 2022 which helped lay the foundations for this exciting new project.

More than 20,000 native trees were planted and we treated more than 19km of riverbank for Japanese knotweed. Our popular 'balsam bashing' work parties, saw us clear nearly 4km of river from Digley right through to Holmfirth town centre.

In 2022, we received a total income of £263,627 on project grants, donations, sponsorship funds and Gift Aid - an 11% increase.

Expenditure was down 18% to £176,732.

Our volunteers continue to be supported by our dedicated staff and trustees, as well as our charity's Year in Industry placement student. Our generous volunteers donated more than 4,500 hours of their time and helped to keep our 2022 projects running successfully.

Our stewardship scheme continues in 2023 with expansion to engage with even more riverside landowners in our catchment. We will also employ a new Assistant River Ranger.

Our vision is that by 2038, the River Holme catchment will be resilient to climate change, a place where nature and wildlife is connected and thriving, and that our local communities, visitors to the area, landowners and local businesses can continue to enjoy and care for the land, its rivers and native wildlife.

PAGE 04

## Our Approach

Supported by our trustees, helped by volunteers and in partnership with like-minded organisations, we continued our work throughout 2022 to help improve the River Holme catchment for people and wildlife.

## Strategic Partnerships

**This year we continued to build on the solid foundations of our first seven years as a charity.**

We’ve strengthened our strategic partnerships, with organisations and communities that are vital for the catchment-based approach (CaBA). By working together towards common goals, CaBA enables us to play an effective role in improving the larger river system.

To this end, we’ve continued Partnership, Calder Rivers Trust, the working collaboratively with Peak District National Park organisations including Our Future Authority, Moors for the Future, Landscapes, The Upper Holme National Trust, Yorkshire Water, The and Colne Catchment group and Woodland Trust, Yorkshire Wildlife the 3Valleys Nature Park. ## Year in Industry Placement

In May we said farewell to Luke Sherwood. As our second Year in Industry placement, Luke proved to be a Contents valuable team member. He became involved in many projects, including invasive non-native species (INNS), riverfly monitoring and the Thongsbridge Wild Space. He led on River Explorer education sessions in schools and at Thornton Lodge Action Group in Huddersfield. He also supported our American Signal 2 crayfish monitoring and American mink control programme. We wish Luke every success as he returns to 3 complete his degree course. 4 Tasha Houghton joined our team in July as the new Year in Industry placement. Taking a year out from her 5 degree in Wildlife Conservation at Nottingham Trent University, Tasha is involved in education, riverfly monitoring, INNS, water vole surveys, tree planting and much more.

"Growing up in the Holme Valley means I really value this small part of the country," said Tasha. She has been busy leading our water vole habitat suitability surveys and is working to identify potential water vole reintroduction sites within our catchment. 6

## **Local Walks and Talks**

We held a number of 'Walks and Talks' throughout the catchment in partnership with the Ramblers Association, led by experienced walker and RHC volunteer, Christine Senior. These included a circular walk around Thongsbridge to learn about the history of local transport, a riverside stroll through Lockwood Spa to explore the local history, and a ramble from Meltham Pleasure Grounds to understand more about the area's industrial heritage.

The series ended with a linear walk from Sands (Holmfirth) to Bottoms Mill, and two meanders through Meltham and Magdale (Honley) to further appreciate the beautiful landscape and its nature.

Thomas Berry Talk

## **Thomas Berry Talk: 12 March**

We enjoyed 'Seeing the World Anew' when we explored Thomas Berry and ecology with Kelvin Ravenscroft, Facilitator of Thomas Berry Manchester.

Tree Walk and Talk

## **Tree Walk and Talk: 16 July**

We celebrated the wonder of local trees within our catchment when we joined Kirklees Council's Peter Banks for a 'tree walk and talk' around Honley Old Wood. During the walk we enjoyed identifying a variety of trees. MagdalThos **e** B **i** oblitzdentified included beech, holly, alder, elderberry, sessile oak, Scots pine, self heal and goats willow.

The event also provided the perfect opportunity to explore the natural history of the site.

Acorn Collecting

## **Acorn Collecting: Autumn Months**

We held a number of acorn collecting days across the catchment.

Native oak trees support more insects than any other tree. They can live a very long time and provide a range of habitats for plants and animals even when they die. They help to reduce climate change by capturing and storing carbon from the atmosphere.

The acorns will be grown on and eventually planted back in the catchment as oak saplings.

Acorns Collected

**Presentation at Holmfirth Film Festival: 30 October**

Former RHC Chair Adrian Barraclough gave a presentation on RHC to help raise awareness of the important work we do.

## Third Saturday Work Parties

Our popular Third Saturday Work Party events have continued throughout 2022 at various locations within the catchment. Funded by Yorkshire Water, activities include getting rid of non-native species, sowing native wildflower seeds, and planting native trees and hedges.

Work Parties are held on the third Saturday of every month from 10am until 12 noon.

PAGE 11

## Projects

In 2022 we continued with many of our ongoing projects, completed others and started new ones. Thank you to the volunteers, businesses, organisations and funding partners who made this happen.

## **River Revamp**

In November 2021, we received funding from the Postcode Neighbourhood Trust for our year-long 'River Revamp' project. The Postcode Neighbourhood Trust is a grant-giving charity which is funded entirely by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. CSR

The grant helped to fund equipment, including hand tools, personal protective equipment (PPE) and books, as well as materials, such as wildflower seeds, plug plants, trees and bird boxes. It also funded training in wildflower identification and first aid courses.

A total of 36 volunteer tasks were held, including INNS management, tree and hedge planting, meadow management and wildflower planting.

Hedgerow Creation, Holmbridge Perseverance Mills Clean Up

## **River Stewardship**

Our ongoing 'River Stewardship Scheme' aims to create and maintain healthy riverside areas. We build partnerships and look after riverside areas for landowners, homeowners and business owners.

Our work can involve anything from river clean-ups and tree planting to Japanese knotweed management and wildlife habitat improvement.

River Clean-up

Over the past year we’ve worked with many businesses, including Bower Roebuck in New Mill, Burton Security in Brockholes and Perseverance Mills in Lockwood, to carry out biodiversity enhancement work on their sites. We’ve also partnered with Turner Townsend, Lubrizol, Cummins Turbo Technologies and Lloyds Bank, running Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) days for their colleagues.

## **INNS Out**

Invasive non-native species (INNS), including Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam and giant hogweed, continue to colonise our riverbanks. INNS damage the environment by crowding out native species and reducing biodiversity. To address the issue we:

Treated 19.1km of riverbank for Japanese knotweed, spraying 5,117 square metres and injecting 782 stems.

Held balsam bashing work parties, clearing 3.7km of river from Digley to Holmfirth town centre.

Treated giant hogweed, where sighted, at Mag Brook and Thongsbridge.

Removed American skunk cabbage from Meltham Pleasure Grounds.

Replanted treated areas with native species.

## Projects

## **Riverside Way**

The Riverside Way spans 15km from Digley Reservoir to Snow Island, Huddersfield.

Tree Planting at Holmbridge

## **Woodland and Hedgerow Creation**

Planting native trees in appropriate places helps the environment by capturing carbon, providing food and shelter for native wildlife, creating wildlife corridors, improving water quality and reducing flood risk. We delivered projects at 10 sites throughout the catchment area and planted a total of 20,237 native trees during 2022.

## _**White Rose Forest**_

As a White Rose Forest partner, we are part of the UK's biggest woodland creation schemes. Thanks to funding from the 'Trees for Climate' project, this has enabled us to carry out landscape scale woodland and hedgerow network creation work.

## _**Hirst Brierley Fund**_ Tree planting Choppards Bank

We have also received funding from the Hirst Brierley Fund (administered via the One Community Foundation) and the Woodland Trust, to plant trees and hedges in the catchment.

Water Vole Release

## **Water Vole Project**

In 2022 our Year in Industry student, Tasha, undertook a water vole habitat suitability survey in the upper catchment of the Holme Valley.

The aim of the project is to map out optimal, good and poor habitats in order to help inform potential future reintroduction projects.

This year, with the help of volunteers, we have successfully managed to survey 9.8km of river from Bilberry Reservoir in Holme to Blackmoorfoot Reservoir in Meltham.

We have mapped this data to highlight connectivity and appropriate habitat between the tributaries.

## **Wildlife Monitoring Project**

We have enjoyed putting together a short film of footage collected by volunteers from across the catchment using trail cameras and GoPros, funded by the Nineveh Charitable Trust. Due to the popularity of the cameras, we have submitted a bid for two extra cameras.

Native Hedgerow Planting at Hill, Holmfirth We continue to lend out our current filming equipment, resulting in some great footage. You can watch local wildlife in action here:

https://www.youtube.com/@river holmeconnections4081/videos

Having previously mapped the Riverside Way in order to identify and prioritise improvement work, we continue to upgrade the route.

Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2022, alongside funding from the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Sir George Martin Trust and sales from our 2023 calendar, we have almost way-marked the entire route. We have also cleared vegetation from the path to improve access and installed a new flagstone causeway through a muddy section. Further improvement projects will continue in 2023.

Riverfly Monitoring Project

## **River Health**

New volunteers have been recruited for our ongoing Riverfly monitoring project. The intention is for these new volunteers to be trained before the next season of monitoring begins.

This year RHC volunteers also attended an end of season event held by Calder Rivers Trust, which outlined findings and patterns from data collected this season.

PAGE 13

## Education

## **Working with Young People**

In October we had a great day down by the river at Spa Wood. We teamed up with Thornton Lodge Action Group in Huddersfield to enjoy a variety of river inspired activities aimed at encouraging young people to take an interest in our river catchment.

We enjoyed making willow fish and decorating them with autumn leaves. We also got very messy making fat balls for the birds, before a race against the clock to find and answer all the nature quiz questions that were hidden in the woods.

Mayfly in the Classroom Project

## **Mayfly in the Classroom**

Local schoolchildren learned about the lifecycle of mayflies in their classrooms.

Our Year in Industry placement, Luke Sherwood spent his last day releasing the mayflies into the catchment.

They were nurtured by Hepworth Junior and Infant School pupils as part of our 'Mayfly in the Classroom' project funded by The Water Conservation Trust.

River Explorer

## **River Explorer**

We completed our 'River Explorer' education programme with six local primary schools last spring. There were seven sessions with Netherthong, Upperthong, Newsome, Hepworth, South Crosland and Helme primary schools.

We worked with 341 children to teach them about our rivers, the wildlife they support and their importance.

## Future Projects

2023 will see several ongoing projects continue. There are also a number of exciting new projects planned for the coming 12 months that will keep the trustees, team and volunteers busy.

## **Water@ Holme:**

Through funding from the Yorkshire Water Community Benefit we will continue to raise awareness of pollution sources within our catchment.

A Project to Restore Nature

## **Nature's Holme:**

Our aim is to create nature rich corridors along the River Holme and its tributaries.

In partnership with South Pennines Park, the Palladium Group and the University of Huddersfield, the two year project will work with farmers and landowners to deliver a wide range of environmental benefits, including: improved soils, flood alleviation, increased biodiversity, carbon storage and improved water quality through the creation of new woodlands, new hedgerows, peatland restoration, buffer strips, hay meadows, ponds and addressing barriers to fish migration.

## **Education:**

Twenty local primary schools have been invited to join our 'River Explorer' education programme, which seeks to help educate young people on the importance of river ecosystems.

Path Creation at Brockholes

**River Stewardship:**

We plan to continue with our River Stewardship scheme and aim to engage with even more riverside landowners in our catchment.

Hedge Planting at Bottoms Mill

## **Tree Planting:**

Our partnership with The White Rose Forest and other organisations continues. In 2023 we have an ambitious, yet realistic target to plant in excess of 20,000 trees and hedges within our catchment. This will have a positive impact on our environment by providing shelter and food for wildlife, carboncapture and reducing flood risk.

Volunteers have been delivering leaflets and creating colourful chalk art masterpieces.

The three-year project involves education and community action days. These include a 'Green Waste' campaign to raise awareness of pollution from garden waste and a 'Only Rain Down the Drain' campaign to raise awareness of water pollution caused by contaminants entering the river system via surface drains.

Education includes raising awareness about composting and the correct disposal of waste materials.

## **INNS Out**

We will continue our bid to remove and control invasive nonnative species (INNS) throughout our catchment.

In 2023 the Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam control projects will expand into new areas of the catchment, including sections of Meltham Dike and Dean Brook.

## **Water Conservation Trust**

Youth Participation Project

**Youth Participation Project:**

We will continue to work closely with Thornton Lodge Action Group. In 2023 we plan to lead on 10 educational sessions.

## Acknowledgements

As you can see from the events, activities and projects undertaken during 2022, we have received an amazing amount of help and support from individuals, organisations, businesses and other charities. We would like to send our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved with our charity throughout the past year. Thanks once again to the landowners, individuals and business owners who have worked with us to improve the river environment. Thanks also to those landowners away from the

riverbanks who have permitted us to plant trees and hedges, providing habitats for wildlife and aiding flood management.

to amaze and inspire us all. You are the very heart of our charity.

Without our volunteers we could only achieve a fraction of the things we have done. It was wonderful to see many of our volunteers return to help this year, as well as to welcome new faces. All we can say is thank you. Your dedication, enthusiasm and motivation to turn out in all weathers to plant trees, clear litter and generally help in whatever way you can, continues **[Thank You!]**

**Many other companies, individuals and community organisations have also contributed to our charity through the invasive species programme. We’ve also received financial and inkind support from:**

- Bower Roebuck Environment Agency Brookes Mill Newsome Community Forum Burton Safes Cummins Turbo Technologies Natural Kirklees Perseverance Mill Yorkshire Water Sir George Martin Trust Kirklees Council Neighbourly Foundation Arnold Clark The Old Bridge Inn Jane Gledhill Water Conservation Trust
