## 1. General information 

- This year the school has 330 pupils (including 11+ classes) studying in 21 classes. The school have 34 teachers/teaching assistant and one caretaker. 

- The Safeguarding Policy is in place. DBS checks are carried out for employment or volunteers in line with statutory requirement. 

- RCS is a member of UK Association for Promoting Chinese Education. 

- All volunteers and trustees give their time voluntarily and received no-remuneration or other benefits. 

- RCS’ objects are to advance education for the public benefit in Chinese language and Chinese culture in the Borough of Reading and its neighbouring areas and beyond. 

- Our main source of funds has been from the school fees for study at RCS. We hold a small fund to help families who would otherwise struggle to pay the fees. 

- The main cost is the rent for classrooms, parents’ rest areas, teachers’ travel allowances, teachers’ training fees, textbooks, students’ awards etc. 

## 2. Teaching & learning 

- The school continues to implement all the policies & rules related to teaching & learning. 

- Our staff attended two training sessions organised by the UKAPC, the School also organised 2 internal training sessions. 

- Some of our students took part the Overseas Chinese Essay Writing Competition and 20 students received awards including the First Prize, Second Prize and Excellency Award. The school would like to thank Ms Zheng and all other teachers who help to organise the writing sessions to improve students’ writing skills. 

   - 8 students took the Edexcel IGCSE Chinese exam in June 2023, all obtained Grades 9 to 8. Many congratulations to all the candidates. Thank Liu Yongqin and Qian Xiaoyun for their hard work. 

- To celebrate the school’s 45th anniversary, ‘RCS got Talent Show’ was hold on 1st October. More than 30 students took part. Their performances were excellent. 

- On 10th February, RCS successfully hosted Chinese Dragon Year’s celebration at Reading Town Hall again. It was the 1st time RCS hosted Dragon Dance and the Lion dance in the Town Hall Square, which attracted large crowds. In the Town Hall, every class took part in showcasing their performing skills. The hall packed with full of 



people. The Mayor of Reading and the MPs for Reading West and the Reading East participated and delivered warm speeches. Thanks for all teachers and TAs’ directed and organised, PTA volunteers for decorated the venue etc. The Piggot School, Maguire O'shea Academy and Queen Anne’s School had been invited to perform. Staff and parents also ran 7 Chinese art workshops in the Town Hall. 

- Our staff attended 2 training sessions organised by the UKAPC, the School also organised 2 internal training sessions. 

- Some of our students took part the Overseas Chinese Essay Writing Competition and 27 students took part. 3 received the 1st prize, 9 got 2nd prize and 15 got the participation awards.  The School would like to thank Zheng Xiuhua Laoshi for organising sessions to help the students. 

- 8 students sat for the IGCSE exam in June 2023. They all achieved excellent results. The school thanked Liu Yongqin for her hard work. 

- Dr Ganggang Zhang (headteacher) and Lina Tang Laoshi received the Excellent Teacher Award in October 2023, we would like to congratulate them again and thank them for their dedication to the School and Chinese Teaching. 

- Over last year, our students participated in various competitions including Calligraphy, Chinese Cultural, and recital.  In the Recital competition, 73 students participated, 38 students managed to enter the UK final, and 8 were chosen to enter the International Final. 

- On 19th May, RCS successful hosted YCT and HSK exams. More than 20 students were non-RCS. Many thanks to Ms Qiu Jin for organising it. 

- On 11th May, RCS first time took part in the Reading Children’s Festival. Students performed 2 dances and ensemble, which were very well received. 4 small dragons danced in the Forbury Garden! 

- On 18th May, RCS were invited by the Reading City Council to run a Chinese workshop in the Oracle Shopping Mall as part of Reading Children’s Festival. 6 teachers and 4 children ran the Chinese culture workshop which attracted many people. 

- Dr Liu thanked all staff and parents again and said that the school will continue with our Specialisation, Standardisation and Formalisation.   We will more actively take part in community events in Reading and surrounding areas to promote understanding and communications with all race and cultures 

- Dr Zhang stressed that safety and health are always our most priority. School asks all staff and parents to remind students to take safety seriously. We will review the school rule etc. All adults in school should be alert to prevent any potential incident happening again. Dr Zhang also reminded people to mind the parking issue.
