Objectives and Activities
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
| Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document |
Para 1.17 | The objects of SSAI are: to promote the arts and the education of the public by providing musical performances, lecture recitals and workshops, information, a forum and other facilities in respect of unusual historical instruments, for as wide an audience as possible. The trustees have to report the sad and untimely death of the charity’s founder, chief executive and artistic director, Clare Salaman, in January 2022. This has required them to reassess how the charity will continue to function in accordance with its objectives, an exercise which was still ongoing at the end of the reporting year. |
| Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts. |

During 2021/22 the SSAI ensemble performed to full houses at Swaledale Festival, at the National Centre for Early Music in York, and at Brecon Baroque Festival. Also, one film was made for Brighton Early Music Festival. Clare Salaman also led composers’ workshops for Psappha in Manchester in Autumn 2021 for thepurposes ofpublic benefit. |

Achievements and Performance
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | The TM project generated new information, entertainment and educational events and a practical resource, which the charity made available to a wide audience. Three performances took place in 2021/22, and SSAI additionally focussed on the creation of TM project resources (films, recordings and further research) to ensure its legacy and dissemination. This project promised to shed light on wider issues of performance in Early Music, inspiring new approaches to the performance of 17thand 18thcentury works. SSAI continued to offer workshops, public performances of ground-breaking musical and cross-arts work,and apublic forum for |
those interested in ‘strange and ancient’ instruments. While appealing to its core of early music audiences, SSAI offered a fresh, openminded and multi-faceted approach to presenting historically informed performance, extending its reach and revitalising the genre. To this end, it continued to produce films and albums, most recently about The Trumpet Marine Project. The charity communicated with and provided material for its ever-growing mailing list and Facebook followers, as part of its provision of a public forum for those interested in old and unusual instruments and music. SSAI was focussed on creating the resources for the TM project. The success of this endeavour bore fruit in the creation of three new musical works, educational and performance films and the delivery of a live programme delivered in 2021/22. These activities satisfied the objects of the CIO in promoting the arts and education of the public by providing performances and workshops, alongside a forum (website and social media) in respect of unusual historical instruments. SSAI’s social media presence and informative newsletter continued to reach a large and diverse audience.
