**Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**

The objects of The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments (SSAI) are: to promote the arts and the education of the public by providing musical performances, lecture recitals and workshops, information, a forum and other facilities in respect of unusual historical instruments, for as wide an audience as possible.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

Like many arts organisations, our activities have been curtailed by COVID 19 and the resulting restrictions. However, SSAI still managed to work on and develop the Trumpet Marine (TM) project, produce a ‘docu-concert’ for Brighton Early Music Festival (streamed in October 2020) and to make best use of the grants awarded before and during the reporting period. The ensemble gained much needed rehearsal times and R&D sessions on the newly commissioned TM instruments - learning to play them in ensemble. During 2020/21 four pieces were created for the ensemble: Liam Connery fulfilled the NCEM commission; Rachel Stott was commissioned to write a piece by the Swaledale Festival; the TM ensemble composed a piece; and a fourth piece was commissioned by the Brighton Early Music Festival from Orlando Gough.

## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about:

- policy on grantmaking;

- policy programme related investment;

- contribution made by volunteers.

Section D                      Achievements and performance

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The TM project generates new information, entertainment and educational events and a practical resource, which will be made available to a wide audience. The original proposal of at least 20 live performances was adjusted in 2020/21 due to Covid restrictions. Three performances are still planned for 2021/22 and, additionally, work will now be focussed on the creation of an in-depth website about the project to ensure its legacy and dissemination. This project promises to shed light on wider issues of performance in early music, inspiring new approaches to the performance of 17[th] and 18[th] century works.

SSAI continues to offer workshops, public performances of groundbreaking musical and cross-arts work, and a public forum for those interested in ‘strange and ancient’ instruments. However, since early 2020, it has been impossible to deliver live public-facing activity.

While appealing to early music audiences, SSAI also offers a fresh, open-minded and multi-faceted approach to presenting historically informed performance, which extends its reach and revitalises the genre. To this end, it has continued to produce videos, most recently about The Trumpet Marine Project.

SSAI communicates with and provides material for its ever-growing mailing list and Facebook followers (5K+), as part of its provision of a public forum for those interested in old and unusual instruments and music.

SSAI has been focussed on creating the resources for the TM project. The success of this endeavour has now borne fruit in the creation of three new musical works, educational and performance videos and the construction of a live programme to be delivered in 2021/22, circumstances allowing.

These activities satisfy the objects of the CIO in promoting the arts and education of the public by providing performances and workshops, alongside a forum (website and social media) in respect of unusual historical instruments. SSAI’s social media presence and informative newsletter continue to reach a large and diverse audience.
